THE DIGESTIBILITY AND THE EFFECT ON DRY STOOLWEIGHT OF DIETARY FIBER FROM APPLE, BRAN, CABBAGE, CARROT AND PEAR IN RATS

Huiyun WU ; Juesheng LI

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica.1956;0(04):-.

The 5 foods, apple, bran, cabbage, carrot and pear, were fed to rats as part of 5 diets each containing 2.5% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and the effect on increasing dry stool weight (DSW) and the digestibility of dietary fiber (DF) components of the foods were studied. The results showed that DSW increased with increased NDF intake, cabbage being the most effective. The mean DSW of the test food groups was 2.27 times compared with non-fiberous controls. The SDW was correlated with intake of NDF and cellulose from analysis of individual variation. The regression equation was y =- 1.9040 + 3.5644X1 (NDF) + 3.5644X2 (cellulose). The digestion of DF components from carrot was the most complete, while hemice-llulose was 1.3 times as digestible as cellulose. Lignin was found to have an influence on DF breakdown. Increasing hemicellulose level might decrease the digestibility of cellulose. The variation of DF digestibility of di- fferent food may also be ascribed to the physical and biological properties of the food.

SOME INTERFERENCE IN THE ASSAY OF VITAMIN E IN BIOLOGICAL MATERIALS

Youping HE ; Lianzhen ZHU

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica.1956;0(01):-.

In this work, some interference in the assay of vitamin E in liver and serum was studied and the method was improved. The sample must be protected from oxidative attack. The interference of high vitamin A content in liver could be removed by H2SO4. The amount of KOH for saponification must be in keeping with the amount of sample assayed both in synthetic a-tocopherol and in biological material by fluorometry. A linear correlation of the fluorescence and the vitamin E content was obtained when 0.5ml of 10 N KOH was used for the saponification of 0.5-100?g of ?-tocopheryl acetate.

A CHEMICAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF VITAMIN D IN FORTIFIED FOODS

Dian ME

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica.1956;0(04):-.

The colorimetric method for the determination of vitamin D in fortified multivitamin milk powder containing 200-3000 IU vitamin D/100g, and oil concentrate and pellet containing 200-5000 IU vitamin D/g is described. The fortified samples are extracted by ethyl ether petroleum ether at ratio of 1:1, then the solvent is evaporated with the rotatory concentrator. The residues are saponified with KOH (50%). The cocentrated samples are saponified directly with KOH. The cholesterol in the saponified samples are eliminated by digitonin precipitation. Other interferences from other fat-soluble vitamins, additives in the formulas and biologically inactive isomers of vitamin D are eliminated by column chromatography on phosphate treated alumina, polyethylene-glycol-600-chromosorb W and fuller's earth and a maleic anhydride addition reaction. After color development, determine the absor-bance at both 500 and 550nm wave lengths. The mean recoveries of vitamin D added to fortified food, milk powder and concentrates, expressed as percentage of the known amount of vitamin D added were 106%; 85.8%; 97.2%-101% respectively.

STUDY OF ORAL NUTRITIOUS LIQUOR FOR CHILDREN-A TRIAL OF CHINESE TRADITIONAL DIETARY THERAPY IN COMBINATION WITH MODERN NUTRITION

Shoumin ZHU

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica.1956;0(03):-.

Chinese traditional dietary therapy is the result of traditional medicine and cookery in China, and of ancient origin and long development. It hold the function to regulate some physiological activities and improve personal nutritional status. According to it a nutritious liquor, a new type of the concentrated drink filled in ampule commonly used in China, for children was designed and manufactured, which composed of a variety of traditional medical foods. The experimental study confirmed that this liquor improves the food availability, immunological activity, the ability to look for food in perplexity in animals and the nutritional status of zinc in juveniles and children etc. The mechanisms of the functions of this new liquor was discussed and the prospective development of the combination of Chinese traditional dietary therapy with modern nutrition was proposed.

STUDY OF THE ENHANCING EFFECT OF GLUCOSE POLYMER ON CALCIUM UPTAKE BY EYERTED RAT ILEAL GUT SAC

Jiaju ZHENG

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica.1956;0(02):-.

The evidence from in vivo studies showed that glucose polymer enhanced intestinal calcium absorption. However, the mechanism with which calcium absorption is increased by glucose polymer administration is not clear. Calcium uptake by isolated everted rat ileal gut sac was used as a technique in an effort to explore the effect of this carbohydrate on calcium uptake under in vitro conditions. As a comparison, ileal sacs were treated with buffer and sugar solutions at an equivalent dose. The results showed that all three sugars, as compared to buffer treatment, enhanced calcium uptake by ileal sacs, lactose 30.7%, glucose polymer 33% and glucose 24.7%, indicating a non-specific mechanism is involved in intestinal calcium absorption.

STUDY OF NUTRITION IN DIVERS DURING He-N_2-O_2 SIMULATED SATURATION DIVING AT THE DEPTH OF 300M

Xuegeng DENG

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica.1956;0(03):-.

In the experiment, 4 male healthy divers were exposed in the He-N2-O2 saturation diving chamber for 21 days and stayed continuously at the depth of 300m for 7 days. Four meals were supplied daily during the exposure to high pressure. Three months prior to and during the period of exposure to high pressure, 2 pills of 9 vitamins compound were given to each diver per day, (a pill contained:YA 2500 IU, VB1 2mg, VB2 Img, VB6 1mg, VC 35 mg, VD2 200 IU, VE 1mg, nicotinamide 10 mg, D-calcium pantothenate 2 mg) and dietary survey, weight measurement and vitamins excretion test were performed. The result showed that the intake of food and calorie were much higher than that prior to and after decompression. The divers were found of the foods with high protein, high carbohydrate, low fat, and full of vitamins, but detested high fat food during exposure to high pressure. Their weights were slightly decreased as compared with those in other experiments reported at home and abroad. Thus the author suggests that free choice of food and a tablet of vitamin compound would be recommended in order to meet the divers' need.

A STUDY OF THE RELATION OF EXOGENOUS OBESE CHILDREN WITH THEIR NUTRITIONAL STATUS

Bin BAO ; Yunzten ZHOU

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica.1956;0(03):-.

The studies of nutritional status and biochemical indices of obese children were taken in three elementary schools with different socioeconomic levels. Subjects including obese and overweight children were matched with normal weight children by the ratio of 1:1. The caloric intake of the obese children was obviously higher than that of the normal children. There were significant differences between the obese and the normal children in concentrations of Hb and serum total protein (p
