The factors influencing on the exclusive breast-feeding in the first 4 months of infant life

The rates of breast-feeding in the first 4 months in 3 areas (urban: Hanoi, rural: Hung Yen, and mountain: Bac Kan) were very low (30%). There are many reasons influencing these rate such as the mother did not have enough breast-milk, mother got disease, preferance of bottle-feeding..., accessing media information of breast-feeding and alternative foods decreased from urban to rural and mountain. In order to lower these rates, it is necessary to propagandize and update information of breast-feeding, especially for mothers in rural and mountain areas

Clinical and paraclinical characteristics of Dengue haemorrhagic fever (with and without Dengue Shock Syndrome) in adults

This retrospective study was aimed to assessing clinical, paraclinical symptoms of 340 patients between 16-45 years old, with Dengue haemorrhagic fever. Patients were divided into 2 groups with and without Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). The results showed that clinical symptoms including sudden high fever, headache, orbital pain, congested skin, petechie, and positive tourniquet test. Paraclinical symptoms included thrombocytopenia increased haematocrite, leukopenia, increased serum transaminases. This disease often occurred in October and November. DSS can occure at 4th to 7th day with symptoms vomiting, sudden subsided fever, cold clammy skin, pleural or pericardial effusion, ascites, rapid increased haematocrite, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia. Dengue haemorrhagic fever can be cured in short time with infusion of isotonic fluid and Ringer lactate fluid

The treatment of active chronic B hepatitis using lamivudine

This randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study evaluated the efficacy of lamivudine in 44 Vietnamese patients with histologically documented chronic hepatitis B for one-year. The patients were randomly assigned to receive 100 mg of lamivudine (22 patients) orally once daily or placebo (22 patients). The patients underwent liver biopsies before entering the study and after completing the assigned treatment regimen. At the end of therapy, the percentage of serum HBVDNA negativation was higher in the lamivudine group (86.4%) than in the control group (22% P<0.05). The rate of HBe/antiHBe seroconversion was statistically different between 2 groups (35.2% in the lamivudine group compared to 12.5% in the controls). 95.5% of the patients received lamivudine had normal alanine aminotransferase levels (versus 18.2% in the placebo). Median change in HAI score was >2 points of improvement versus placebo. Lamivudine is less side effects, safety, and favorable

Some remarks about 128 cases of transurethral resection of benign prostatic hypertrophy

From July 1998 to July 2001, 128 patients age ranged from 54-90 (67.2) with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BHP) were treated by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in Urinary Department - Military Hospital 108. The indication for TURP was symptomatic prostatism (100%), urinary tract infection (10.9%), acute retention (4.6%) and renal insufficiency (2.3%). TURP is the technique of choice for small (<20g) - 14.1% and medium-size prostate (20-60g) - 85.9%. Retention, hemorrhage and urinary tract infection are the most frequent complications at and after operation. Mastering of technique and careful assessment of patient and of local status are two important factors contributing to reduction of the rate of the resectoscopy complications. The outcomes were: good and average: 91.5%, bad: 8.5%, no one die

Heart diseases and pregnancy at Institue for Protection of Mothers and Newborns

During 1 year (2001), there were 86 cardiac patients (1.18% of all pregnancy) treated at IPMN. Acquired heart diseases rate is 81.79%, of which the most frequent ones are mitral stenosis and regurgitation (37.02%), followed by pure mitral stenosis (12.79%). Congenital cardiopathy accounted for 18.58%. The most frequent complications are heart failure (91.67%). The mortality is 0%. The main treatment is Cesar operation (55.81%); forceps (32.56%)
