Excessive levels of cadmium (Cd) in soil exert serious negative impacts on soil ecosystems. Microorganisms are a common component of soil and show great potential for mitigating soil Cd. This review summarizes the application and remediation mechanisms of microorganisms, microbial-plants, and microbial-biochar in Cd-contaminated soil. Microorganisms such as Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can change the biological validity of Cd through adsorption, mineralization, precipitation and dissolution. Different factors such as pH, temperature, biomass, concentration, and duration have significant effects on Cd bioavailability by microorganisms. Pseudomonas, Burkholderia, and Flavobacterium can promote the uptake of Cd2+ by hyperaccumulator through promotion and activation. Biochar, a soil amendment, possesses unique physicochemical properties and could act as a shelter for microorganisms in agriculture. The use of combined microbial-biochar can further stabilize Cd compared to using biochar alone.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the DNA damage response of procarbazine hydrochloride (PCZ) and ethyl carbamate (EC) to different tissues in rats by performing alkaline comet assay, to validate the feasibility of alkaline comet assay of various tissues. METHODS: Totally 30 SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups according to body weight, with 5 rats in each group, such as negative control group (hyperpure water), PCZ 75 mg/kg group, PCZ 150 mg/kg group, EC 400 mg/kg group, EC 800 mg/kg group, positive control group (N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea 40 mg/kg). Those rats were given relevant medicine intragasttrically for 4 d; clinical symptoms of rats were observed and body weight was recorded during experiment. Within 3 h after last medication, the rats were sacrificed; liver, renal and lung weight were weighed; liver, kidney, lung and peripheral blood lymphocytes were collected. The single cell suspension was prepared to perform alkaline comet assay. After lysis, unwind, electrophoresis and dying, tail DNA% and tail distance of samples were analyzed by Komet 6.0 software. RESULTS: Compared with negative control group, body weight, liver and renal weight of rats were decreased significantly in PCZ 75 mg/kg group, PCZ 150 mg/kg group and positive control group 4 d after medication (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Body weight of rats were decreased significantly in EC 800 mg/kg 4 d after medication (P<0.05 or P<0.01); there was no statistical significance (P>0.05). Compared with negative control group, tail DNA% and tail distance in liver, kidney and peripheral blood lymphocytes were increased significantly in PCZ 75 mg/kg group, PCZ 150 mg/kg group and positive control group (P<0.05 or P<0.01); PCZ showed more significant effects on liver and lung. Tail DNA% and tail distance of liver, kidney and peripheral blood lymphocytes were increased significantly in EC 800 mg/kg group (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and tail DNA% and tail distance of renal tissue was increased significantly in EC 400 mg/kg group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: PCZ induced stronger DNA damage; liver and lung are the major genotoxicity target of PCZ. EC-induced DNA damage is relatively weak, and kidney is the most sensitive organ for EC-induced genotoxicity.

Chinese Journal of Pediatrics 2018;56(11):835-845
Objective:
To establish comprehensive laboratory reference intervals for Chinese children.
Methods:
This was a cross-sectional multicenter study. From June 2013 to December 2014, eligible healthy children aged from 6-month to 17-year were enrolled from 20 medical centers with informed consent. They were assessed by physical examination, questionnaire survey and abdominal ultrasound for eligibility. Fasting blood samples were collected and delivered to central laboratory. Measurements of 15 clinical laboratory parameters were performed, including estradiol (E2), testosterone(T), luteinizing hormone(LH), follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH), alanine transaminase(ALT), serum creatinine(Scr), cystatin C, immunoglobulin A(IgA), immunoglobulin G(IgG), immunoglobulin M(IgM), complement (C3, C4), alkaline phosphatase(ALP), uric acid(UA) and creatine kinase(CK). Reference intervals were established according to central 95% confidence intervals for reference population, stratified by age and sex.
Results:
In total, 2 259 children were enrolled. Finally, 1 648 children were eligible for this study, including 830 boys and 818 girls, at a mean age of 7.4 years. Age- and sex- specific reference intervals have been established for the parameters. Reference intervals of sex hormones increased gradually with age. Concentrations of ALT, cystatin C, ALP and CK were higher in children under 2 years old. Serum levels of sex hormones, creatinine, immunoglobin, CK, ALP and urea increased rapidly in adolescence, with significant sex difference. In addition, reference intervals were variable depending on assay methods. Concentrations of ALT detected by reagents with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate(PLP) were higher than those detected by reagents without PLP. Compared with enzymatic method, Jaffe assay always got higher results of serum creatinine, especially in children younger than 9 years old.
Conclusion
This study established age- and sex- specific reference intervals, for 15 clinical laboratory parameters based on defined healthy children.

Objective To observe the clinical outcomes and safety of continuous negative pressure irrigation (NPI) and endoscopic necrosectomy(ED) for treating infected pancreatic necrosis(IPN). Methods A retrospective review of the data of 163 severe acute pancreatitis(SAP) patients with IPN who were treated by four-step drainage from January 2012 to December 2013 at the SAP therapy center of Nanjing General Hospital was performed. All patients were divided into 7 groups including PCD alone, PCD+NPI, PCD+NPI+ED, PCD+ON, PCD +NPI +ON, PCD +ED +ON and PCD +NPI +ED +ON group based on the drainage strategy of percutaneous catheter drainage(PCD),NPI, ED and open necrosectomy(ON), and the feasibility and safety were analyzed. Results All the patients underwent PCD therapy. Each patient underwent a median of 3 drainage procedures and the median total drainage duration was 11 days. No significant procedure-related complication was observed. Around 40% of the patients recovered after receiving PCD alone. Thirty-four patients(20.9%) underwent ON. The mean hospitalization duration was 38 days and the mean ICU stay was 19 days. There were 25 cases with new-onset organ functional failure,26 patients with sepsis,32 patients with gastric and intestinal fistula,34 patients with intra-abdominal bleeding,8 patients with portal vein thrombosis and 3 patients with gastric outlet obstruction. 28 patients(17.2%) died. Conclusions This four-step approach is effective in treating IPN when compared with other step-up strategies. NPI and ED could offer distinct clinical efficacy without adding no extra risk to patients.
