Background:
Skipping breakfast is associated with an increased risk of chronic inflammatory diseases. This study aimed to examine the association between breakfast-eating habits and inflammation, using high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) as a marker.
Methods:
A total of 4,000 Korean adult males with no history of myocardial infarction, angina, stroke, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, or current smoking were included. Data from the 2016–2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for analysis. The frequency of breakfast consumption was assessed through a questionnaire item in the dietary survey section asking participants about their weekly breakfast consumption routines over the past year. Participants were categorized into two groups, namely “0–2 breakfasts per week” and “3–7 breakfasts per week”; hs-CRP concentrations were measured through blood tests.
Results:
Comparing between the “infrequent breakfast consumption (0–2 breakfasts per week)” and “frequent breakfast consumption (3–7 breakfasts per week)” groups, the mean hs-CRP was found to be significantly higher in the “infrequent breakfast consumption” group, even after adjusting for age, body mass index, physical activity, alcohol consumption, systolic blood pressure, blood pressure medication, fasting blood glucose, and triglycerides (mean hs-CRP: frequent breakfast consumption, 1.36±0.09 mg/L; infrequent breakfast consumption, 1.17±0.05 mg/L; P-value=0.036).
Conclusion
Less frequent breakfast consumption was associated with elevated hs-CRP levels. Further large-scale studies incorporating adjusted measures of daily eating patterns as well as food quality and quantity are required for a deeper understanding of the role of breakfast in the primary prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 2025;51(2):95-101
Objectives:
This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis using the three-dimensional (3D)-printed TMJ injection guide in cases of hemarthrosis caused by condyle fractures.
Materials and Methods:
A retrospective chart review was conducted for patients treated with the customized TMJ arthrocentesis guide to address hemarthrosis. Inclusion criteria included adults older than 18 years with condylar fractures not indicated for open reduction and internal fixation. The guide was fabricated using computed tomography or cone-beam computed tomography scans and 3D printing to control the degree and depth of the needle through the guide to aspirate hemarthrosis.
Results:
Six joints from five patients (average age 52.4 years) were treated using the guide. Post-procedural magnetic resonance imaging confirmed complete resolution of hemarthrosis in all cases. A representative case demonstrated successful outcomes with normal healing and no complications at 8 months post-procedure.
Conclusion
The customized TMJ injection guide, using ear-based reference points, significantly enhances the accuracy and safety of TMJ arthrocentesis. This innovation is expected to increase the accessibility and effectiveness of TMJ-related treatments for clinicians without specialized TMJ expertise.

RESULTS:
Resveratrol significantly reduced cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling in aging hearts. In addition, resveratrol significantly ameliorated aging-induced mitochondrial dysfunction (e.g., decreased oxygen respiration and increased hydrogen peroxide emission) and mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signaling (the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening sensitivity, and cleaved caspase-3 protein levels).Resveratrol also significantly attenuated aging-induced apoptosis (determined via cleaved caspase-3 staining and TUNEL-positive myonuclei) in cardiac muscles.
CONCLUSION
This study demonstrates that resveratrol treatment has a beneficial effect on aging-induced cardiac remodeling by ameliorating mitochondrial dysfunction and inhibiting mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in the heart.

This study explores the development, roles, and key initiatives of the Regional Environmental Health Centers in Korea, detailing their evolution through four distinct phases and their impact on environmental health policy and local governance. It chronicles the establishment and transformation of these centers from their inception in May 2007, through four developmental stages. Originally named Environmental Disease Research Centers, they were subsequently renamed Environmental Health Centers following legislative changes. The analysis includes the expansion in the number of centers, the transfer of responsibilities to local governments, and the launch of significant projects such as the Korean Children’s Environmental Health Study (Ko-CHENS ). During the initial phase (May 2007–February 2009), the 10 centers concentrated on research-driven activities, shifting from a media-centered to a receptor-centered approach. In the second phase, prompted by the enactment of the Environmental Health Act, six additional centers were established, broadening their scope to address national environmental health issues. The third phase introduced Ko-CHENS, a 20-year national cohort project designed to influence environmental health policy by integrating research findings into policy frameworks. The fourth phase marked a decentralization of authority, empowering local governments and redefining the centers' roles to focus on regional environmental health challenges. The Regional Environmental Health Centers have significantly evolved and now play a crucial role in addressing local environmental health issues and supporting local government policies. Their capacity to adapt and respond to region-specific challenges is essential for the effective implementation of environmental health policies, reflecting geographical, socioeconomic, and demographic differences.

The Korean Journal of Pain 2025;38(1):69-78
Background:
Chronic pain significantly affects daily activities, mental health, and the interpersonal relationships of patients. Consequently, physicians use various treatments to manage pain. This study investigated the perceptions of treatment, accompanying symptoms, and other problems in patients with chronic pain.
Methods:
The authors enrolled patients with chronic pain from 19 university hospitals in South Korea. Data was collected on age, gender, diagnosis, disease duration, severity of pain, perception of pain treatment, and accompanying symptoms or problems using an anonymous survey comprising 19 questions.
Results:
In total, 833 patients with chronic pain completed the survey, and 257 (31.0%) and 537 (64.5%) patientsexpressed concerns about the potential adverse effects of medication and opioid addiction, respectively. Personalitychanges such as irritability or anger were the most frequent accompanying symptoms in 507 (63.8%) patients, followed by depression and sleep disturbance in 462 (58.1%) and 450 (54.5%) patients, respectively. Depression (P = 0.001) and anxiety (P = 0.029) were more common among women, whereas divorce (P = 0.016), family conflict (P < 0.001), unemployment (P < 0.001), suicide attempts (P < 0.001), and restrictions on economic activity (P < 0.001) were more common among men. The frequency of accompanying symptoms, except for suicidal ideation, was higher in the younger patients aged ≤ 40 years than in the older patients aged > 40 years.
Conclusions
Many patients with chronic pain had concerns about adverse effects or medication tolerance and experienced anxiety, depression, or sleep disturbances. The prevalence of accompanying problems varies according to age and gender.

Jun-Koo KANG ; Yun-Sok HA ; Sungchan PARK ; Tae Gyun KWON ; Tae-Hwan KIM
Urogenital Tract Infection 2025;20(1):42-47
Purpose:
Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is a multifactorial condition that can significantly diminish quality of life. Although some patients have reported persistent pelvic pain after radical prostatectomy (RP), the prevalence and direct causal relationship between CPPS and RP remain unclear. This multicenter prospective study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Urovaxom for improving CPPS symptoms.
Materials and Methods:
A total of 52 prostate cancer patients who underwent RP were enrolled and administered Urovaxom (60 mg/day) for 12 weeks. Changes in National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI), overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and inflammation markers (white blood cell [WBC], C-reactive protein [CRP]) were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.
Results:
After 12 weeks of treatment, the NIH-CPSI total score significantly decreased from 19 (interquartile range [IQR], 16–23) to 12.5 (IQR, 8.0–16.8) (p<0.001). The OABSS total score decreased from 8 (IQR, 4–11) to 5 (IQR, 3.0–7.8), and the IPSS total score decreased from 13.5 (IQR, 10.0–22.8) to 10.5 (IQR, 5.0–17.0) (p<0.001). WBC levels showed a slight increase (p=0.028), but the clinical relevance of this change is uncertain and warrants further investigation. CRP changes were not statistically significant (p=0.274).
Conclusions
Urovaxom demonstrated significant efficacy in improving CPPS symptoms, particularly pain and reduced quality of life, in patients following RP. These findings suggest Urovaxom as a potential therapeutic option for CPPS after management using RP.

Journal of Liver Cancer 2025;25(1):123-133
Background:
s/Aims: In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which exhibits high mortality and recurrence rates globally, the traits of cancer stem cells (CSCs) that significantly influence recurrence and metastasis are not well understood. CSCs are self-renewing cell types identified in most liquid and solid cancers, contributing to tumor initiation, growth, resistance, recurrence, and metastasis following chemo-radiotherapy or trans-arterial chemoembolization therapy.
Methods:
CSCs are classified based on the expression of cell surface markers such as CD133, which varies depending on the tumor type. Proteomic analysis of liver cancer cell lines with cancer stem cell potential and HCC cancer cell lines lacking stem cell propensity was conducted to compare and analyze specific expression patterns.
Results:
Proteomic profiling and enrichment analysis revealed higher expression of the calcium-binding protein S100 family in CD133+ Huh7 cells than in CD133- or wild-type cells. Furthermore, elevated expression of S100 family members was confirmed in an actual CD133+ liver cancer cell line via protein-protein network analysis and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).
Conclusion
The S100 family members are not only new markers of cancer stem cells but will also assist in identifying new treatment strategies for CSC metastasis and tumor advancement.
