Purpose:
The aim of this study was to compare the large multi-institutional data of surgical outcomes of bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA) robotic (RT) and endoscopic thyroidectomy (ET) and to evaluate the merits of robotic thyroidectomy.
Methods:
From 2004 to 2015, 1,029 patients underwent BABA ET, and from 2008 to 2015, 2003 patients underwent BABA RT in 3 large volume centers in Korea. Two groups were retrospectively compared in terms of clinicopathologic characteristics, complications, surgical completeness, and long-term outcomes using propensity score matching analysis.
Results:
Both groups had similar demographic characteristics including age, sex, tumor size, pathologic stage, and hospital stay after matching. Each group had similar rate of transient hypoparathyroidism, however, ET showed significantly higher rate of permanent hypoparathyroidism (ET 5.2% vs. RT 2.3%, P = 0.05), and transient vocal cord palsy (ET 14.4% vs. RT 9.1%, P = 0.006). Total operation time was longer in the ET group irrespective of surgical extents, including lobectomy (P = 0.016), total thyroidectomy (P = 0.031), and total thyroidectomy with central lymph node dissection (P = 0.019). The rate of patients with off-Tg under 1.0 ng/mL after 1st ablation was significantly higher in RT than ET group (ET 64.6% vs. RT 92.7%, P < 0.001). In long-term follow-up of cancer patients, 1.4% experienced recurrence after ET (10 cases), while 0.3% cases experienced recurrence after RT (5 cases) (P < 0.001).
Conclusion
Both ET and RT can be safe and effective methods to treat thyroid diseases. However, the application of robotic system may help to overcome the limitations of the instruments and surgeon’s skills.

Actinomycosis is a slowly progressive, chronic infectious disease. It is caused by the genus Actinomyces, which are gram-positive anaerobic bacteria. It presents as a mass-like lesion, composed of bacterial nidus and characteristic granulomatous inflammatory fibrosis. As such, it has frequently been mistaken for a malignancy. Surgical resection is a common procedure in these patients prior to a definite diagnosis. Although actinomycosis can occur in a variety of regions, including oral-cervicofacial, thoracic, and abdominopelvic cavities, the involvement of the pancreas is very rare. We report a case of a 44-year-old male with a symptomatic actinomycosis caused by a mass in the tail of the pancreas. The diagnosis was made using an endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy without surgical resection. After the treatment with antibiotics, the pancreatic mass was confirmed to be resolved on the follow-up computed tomography.

6.An anatomical study on the mandibular medial surface by CBCT analysis for safer implant placement.
Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 2011;37(1):43-48
INTRODUCTION: This study examined the anatomical morphology of the medial surface of the posterior mandible using 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CT) images to reduce the number of complications related to dental implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients were enrolled in this study with an average age (+/-standard deviation) of 44.28 (+/-13.05). On the coronal views cone-beam CT of the first molars, the distance between the top of the canal and alveolar crest vertical distance (VD), the distance between the upper-most point of the canal and the point perpendicular to the lingual cortical margin of the mandible lingual distance (LD), the location of the starting point of VD for reducing from the vertical reference line (VD point), and the inclination of the mandibular medial surface (lingual inclination) were measured, and a statistical evaluation was performed using SPSS for Windows version 15.0. RESULTS: The mean VD0 was 16.91+/-2.47 mm and VDx decreased with increasing x value. The mean LD was 5.27+/-1.36 mm. The VD began to decrease at the mean location of 6.12+/-0.96 mm from the vertical reference line. The mean lingual inclination was 1.52+/-0.72degrees. CONCLUSION: These results will assist in the accurate placement of dental implants and the reduction of complications, particularly in the case of preoperative implant planning using only 2-dimensional imaging methods. 8.Clinical study of maxillofacial trauma of children.
Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 2010;36(1):43-52
PURPOSE: To research about maxillofacial traumatic injuries of children in aspects of gender difference, various incidence rates between age, trauma type, cause, monthly and daily incidence rate, type of tooth damage, gingival damage, soft tissue damage, and type of facial bone fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study group consisted of children under 15 years of age who visited Dental Hospital, School of Dentistry, Kyung Hee University from 2004/7/1 to 2007/6/30 with chief complaint of oral and maxillofacial traumatic injuries. 1,559 cases of traumatic injuries were studied from 1,556 (1,004 male, 552 female) children. CONCLUSION: 1. There were slightly more boys than girls, giving a male-to-female ratio of 1.82:1.0. The 1-3 year old boys and girls had the highest number of traumatic injuries. 2. Of the 1,556 patients, 68.63% had soft tissue injuries, 50.22% had periodontal injuries, 29.89% had teeth injuries, and 3.85% had maxillofacial bone fractures. 3. Falling down was the most common cause of injury in both sexes. 4. The months with the highest incidence rates were in order May (12.12%), June (11.74%), and October (11.13%). Most of the injuries occurred on weekends. 5. The most common tooth injury was uncomplicated crown fracture, and the most common periodontal injury was subluxation. The majority of traumatizes teeth were the upper central incisors. 6. The most common soft tissue injury was intraoral lacerations. 7. Mandibular fractures were most frequent in facial bone fractures; symphysis, condylar head, and angle fractures were most frequent in mandibular fractures; maxillary and nasal bone fractures were most frequent in midfacial bone fractures.

Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 2010;36(4):291-302
Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a side effect of Bisphosphonates (BPs) use. These days, oral bisphosphonates are normally prescribed to treat osteoporosis. Intravenous BPs are used extensively to treat osteolytic bone lesions related to multiplemyeloma and bone metastasis of solid cancers, breast cancer or prostate cancer. As the prescription of BPs is universalized and the number of people treated with BPs is increasing, an accurate understanding and proper management of BRONJ are required. The aim of this study was to improve the clinicians'understanding of BRONJ by reviewing the literature. To achieve this, this paper introduces case reports as well as the current concept of BRONJ based on the 2009 updates by American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial (AAOMS) including the definition, epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of BRONJ.

Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 2010;36(2):128-133
Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is very aggressive and represents approximately 1% of all chondrosarcomas. While it affects a very wide age range, the peak frequency is in the second decade of life. It may occur in the head and rib region with a predilection for the maxillofacial skeleton. The small cell undifferentiated component may assume a hemangiopericytoma-like vascular pattern and should be distinguished from hemangiopericytoma. Treatment is en bloc resection, the intended tissue margins of excision should be designed to extend well beyond the actual tumor margin, as mesenchymal chondrosarcomas. Aggressive behavior of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the jaw, with a tendency for delayed recurrence and metastasis even many years after treatment. The most frequent site of metastasis was the lung. Here we present 52 years old , female case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma occurs on Rt. mandible.
