1.Factors Associated with Suicide Risk among the Elderly Living Alone in Jeju, Korea

		                        			 Background:
		                        			The growing number of elderly individuals living alone presents a major social issue, encompassing loneliness, isolation, economic and health challenges, and increased risk of suicide. This study aimed to identify factors associated with suicide risk among elderly individuals living alone in Jeju. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			A total of 4,742 participants completed questionnaires to assess their sociodemographic characteristics. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Short Form Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean version (sGDS-K), with a cutoff score of eight indicating the presence of depressive symptoms. Suicide risk was assessed using the MiniInternational Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify significant correlates of suicide risk. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified the following factors as significantly associated with suicide risk: poor subjective health status (odds ratio [OR]=1.590, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.137-2.224), current drinking (OR=1.511, 95% CI: 1.119-2.042), hypertension (OR=1.419, 95% CI: 1.133-1.778), and sGDS scores ≥8 (OR=4.318, 95% CI: 3.408-5.469). 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			This study highlights the importance of intensive mental health services and socioeconomic support in preventing suicide among elderly individuals living alone. Targeted interventions should focus on those who have poor subjective health status, are current drinkers, have hypertension, or exhibit depressive symptoms. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
2.Genome Characterization of Streptococcus mitis KHUD 011 Isolated from the Oral Microbiome of a Healthy Korean Individual

		                        			 Purpose:
		                        			This study aimed to perform a genome characterization of Streptococcus mitis KHUD 011, a strain isolated from the oral microbiome of a healthy Korean individual, and to compare its genomic features with other S. mitis strains.  
		                        		
		                        			Materials and Methods:
		                        			The strain was identified through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and its genome was sequenced using the PacBio Sequel II platform. De novo assembly and annotation were performed, followed by comparative genomic analysis with three additional strains (S. mitis NCTC 12261, S022-V3-A4, and B6). Pan-genome and phylogenetic analyses were conducted to identify strain-specific genes and assess inter-strain genomic diversity.  
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			The genome of S. mitis KHUD 011 consisted of 1,782 protein-coding genes, with a G+C content of 40.24%. Pan-genome analysis identified 1,263 core gene clusters (50.0%), 496 dispensable clusters (19.7%), and 763 strain-specific clusters (30.3%). KHUD 011 displayed 88 strain-specific genes, particularly associated with cell wall/membrane biogenesis, transcriptional regulation, and carbohydrate metabolism. Phylogenetic analysis placed KHUD 011 closely with NCTC 12261, forming a distinct cluster apart from other strains.  
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			The genome characterization of S. mitis KHUD 011 underscores substantial inter-strain genomic diversity influenced by host interactions, ecological niches, and health status. The identified strain-specific genes, particularly those associated with cell wall/ membrane biogenesis, transcriptional regulation, and carbohydrate metabolism, suggest adaptations to the oral microbiome and its interaction with the host. These findings highlight the ecological versatility of S. mitis and the importance of exploring strains from diverse environments to better understand their role within the host and the broader microbiome. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
3.Group B Streptococcus Detection Rate and Clindamycin Resistance Among Reproductive-Age Women in Korea During 2003–2022

		                        			 Background:
		                        			Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is one of the leading causes of neonatal earlyonset sepsis, resulting in high mortality and significant comorbidity. Intrapartum penicillin prophylaxis is recommended for pregnant women with GBS colonization to prevent vertical transmission. For pregnant women at high risk of anaphylaxis to penicillin, clindamycin is recommended only if the susceptibility of GBS isolates has been identified. We retrospectively examined the GBS detection rate and clindamycin resistance among Korean women of reproductive age over the last 20 years. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			Microbiologic studies using vaginal, vaginal–rectal or vaginal–perianal swabs from female patients 15–49 years of age during 2003–2022 were reviewed. Annual GBS detection rates and clindamycin resistance rates were calculated. The study period was divided into two periods (period 1, 2003–2015; period 2, 2016–2022) based on the introduction of universal culture-based GBS screening in our center in 2016. GBS detection rates and clindamycin resistance rates were compared between the periods using χ2 tests. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			A total of 14,571 women were tested 16,879 times and GBS was isolated in 1,054 tests (6.2%), with 423 clindamycin-resistant isolates (40.1%). The GBS detection rate increased from 3.4% (301/8,869) in period 1 to 9.4% (2,753/8,010) in period 2 (P < 0.001). Even during period 1, the GBS detection rate was higher in 2009–2015 compared to 2003–2008 (P < 0.001). Clindamycin resistance rates have remained at similar levels since 2009, which were 39.5% (199/301) in period 1 and 40.2% (303/753) in period 2 (P = 0.833). 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			This study demonstrated that GBS detection rates in Korean women of reproductive age significantly increased almost three times during the twenty years of the study period, with a persistently high clindamycin resistance rate of up to 40%.

		                        			 Background:
		                        			With growing elderly populations, management of patients with acute stroke is increasingly important. In South Korea, the Acute Stroke Quality Assessment Program (ASQAP) has contributed to improving the quality of stroke care and practice behavior in healthcare institutions. While the mortality of hemorrhagic stroke remains high, there are only a few assessment indices associated with hemorrhagic stroke. Considering the need to develop assessment indices to improve the actual quality of care in the field of acute stroke treatment, this study aims to investigate the current status of human resources and practices related to the treatment of patients with acute stroke through a nationwide survey. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			For the healthcare institutions included in the Ninth ASQAP of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), data from January 2022 to December 2022 were collected through a survey on the current status and practice of healthcare providers related to the treatment of patients with acute stroke. The questionnaire consisted of 19 items, including six items on healthcare providers involved in stroke care and 10 items on the care of patients with acute stroke. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			In the treatment of patients with hemorrhagic stroke among patients with acute stroke, neurosurgeons were the most common providers. The contribution of neurosurgeons in the treatment of ischemic stroke has also been found to be equivalent to that of neurologists. However, a number of institutions were found to be devoid of healthcare providers who perform definitive treatments, such as intra-arterial thrombectomy for patients with ischemic stroke or cerebral aneurysm clipping for subarachnoid hemorrhage. The intensity of the workload of healthcare providers involved in the care of patients with acute stroke, especially those involved in definitive treatment, was also found to be quite high. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			Currently, there are almost no assessment indices specific to hemorrhagic stroke in the ASQAP for acute stroke. Furthermore, it does not reflect the reality of the healthcare providers and practices that provide definitive treatment for acute stroke. The findings of this study suggest the need for the development of appropriate assessment indices that reflect the realities of acute stroke care. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
5.A Longitudinal Increase in Serum Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase Levels, but Not in Alanine Aminotransferase Levels, Improves the Prediction of Risk of Impaired Fasting Glucose in Male

		                        			 Background:
		                        			Impaired fasting glucose (IFG), being a pre-diabetic condition, can increase the risk of overt diabetes; thus early detection and prediction of IFG are important to reduce the incidence of overt diabetes. Some predictive factors, including serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), have been reported in several studies, but none of the studies have investigated the effect of longitudinal changes in individual serum ALT and GGT levels on the risk of IFG. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			We aimed to investigate the association between changes in the serum ALT and GGT levels and the risk of IFG using a checkup database between 1999 and 2014. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			A total of 3,598 males and 3,275 females were enrolled in the study. We performed a follow-up test of serum ALT or GGT in each individual, and classified the cases in which the serum ALT or GGT level was increased or decreased during the follow-up test compared to the baseline. According to the multivariate Cox proportional hazards model, the hazard ratio was 1.76 (95% confidence interval, 1.45–2.12; P < 0.001) in male subjects with an increased serum GGT level compared to male subjects with a decrease in the serum GGT level at followup compared to the baseline. However, the relationship between the serum ALT level and incidence of new-onset IFG was not statistically significant in both sexes; and in females, the relationship between the serum GGT level and incidence of new-onset IFG was also not statistically significant. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			We revealed that a longitudinal increase in serum GGT levels was related to an increased risk of IFG in males. Therefore, monitoring the changes in serum GGT levels is important for predicting new-onset IFG, and it can be used as an early indicator of onset of overt diabetes in males. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
6.Rapid Recovery From SARS-CoV-2Infection Among Immunocompromised Children Despite Limited Neutralizing Antibody Response: A Virologic and Sero-Immunologic Analysis of a Single-Center Cohort

		                        			 Background:
		                        			Immunocompromised (IC) pediatric patients are at increased risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, but the viral kinetics and seroimmunologic response in pediatric IC patients are not fully understood. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			From April to June 2022, a prospective cohort study was conducted. IC pediatric patients hospitalized for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were enrolled. Serial saliva swab and serum specimens were subjected to reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays with mutation sequencing, viral culture, anti-spike-protein, anti-nucleocapsid antibody assays, plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and multiplex cytokine assays. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			Eleven IC children were evaluated. Their COVID-19 symptoms resolved promptly (median, 2.5 days; interquartile range, 2.0–4.3). Saliva swab specimens contained lower viral loads than nasopharyngeal swabs (P = 0.008). All cases were BA.2 infection, and 45.5% tested negative within 14 days by saliva swab from symptom onset. Eight (72.7%) showed a time-dependent increase in BA.2 PRNT titers, followed by rapid waning. Multiplex cytokine assays revealed that monocyte/macrophage activation and Th 1 responses were comparable to those of non-IC adults. Activation of interleukin (IL)-1Ra and IL-6 was brief, and IL-17A was suppressed. Activated interferon (IFN)-γ and IL-18/IL-1F4 signals were observed. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			IC pediatric patients rapidly recovered from COVID-19 with low viral loads.Antibody response was limited, but cytokine analysis suggested an enhanced IFN-γ- and IL-18-mediated immune response without excessive activation of inflammatory cascades. To validate our observation, immune cell-based functional studies need to be conducted among IC and non-IC children. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
7.Amplicon-Based MinION Sequencing Complements Severe Fever With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS) Diagnosis via Real-Time RT-PCR in Patients With Suspected SFTS

		                        			 Background:
		                        			Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a lethal threat.Increasing Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) risk in Asia and the United States stems from the spread of natural host, Haemaphysalis longicornis. Rapid and accurate SFTSV molecular diagnosis is crucial for treatment decisions, reducing fatality risk. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			Blood samples from 17 suspected SFTS patients at Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital (September-December 2022) were collected. SFTSV was diagnosed using two reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays from Gangwon Institute of Health and Environment (RT-qPCR/GIHE) and Asan Medical Center (RT-qPCR/AMC). To address RT-qPCR disparities, amplicon-based MinION sequencing traced SFTSV genomic sequences in clinical samples. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			In two samples (N39 and N50), SFTSV was detected in both RT-qPCR/GIHE and RTqPCR/AMC. Among 11 samples, RT-qPCR/AMC exclusively detected SFTSV. In four samples, both assays yielded negative results. Amplicon-based MinION sequencing enabled nearly whole-genome sequencing of SFTSV in samples N39 and N50. Among 11 discordant samples, five contained significant SFTSV reads, aligning with the RT-qPCR/AMC findings. However, another six samples showed insufficient viral reads in accordance with the negativity observed in RT-qPCR/GIHE. The phylogenetic pattern of SFTSV demonstrated N39 formed a genetic lineage with genotype A in all segments. SFTSV N50 grouped with the B-1 sub-genotype for L segment and B-2 sub-genotype for the M and S segments, indicating genetic reassortment. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			The study demonstrates the robust sensitivity of amplicon-based MinION sequencing for the direct detection of SFTSV in clinical samples containing ultralow copies of viral genomes. Next-generation sequencing holds potential in resolving SFTSV diagnosis discrepancies, enhancing understanding of diagnostic capacity, and risk assessment for emerging SFTSV. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
8.Epidemiological characteristics of patients with scabies at a Korean university hospital: a single-center retrospective study

		                        			 This study aimed to establish infection control strategies for preventing the spread of scabies within a single institution by analyzing the epidemiological characteristics of patients diagnosed with scabies. Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study. The electronic medical records of 430 patients diagnosed with scabies at the dermatology outpatient department of Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital from January 2020 to December 2022 were used to collect data on their characteristics. The subjects were divided into three groups: patients, family of confirmed patients, and healthcare workers. General and epidemiological characteristics were analyzed. Results: The average age was 60.89 ± 22.39 years. The number of days from symptom onset to diagnosis was unknown in many cases (65.3%), although the average was 63.42 ± 64.18 days. Repeated visits after treatment were observed in 193 patients (67.5%), 38 family members of confirmed patients (55.1%), and 35 healthcare workers (46.7%), showing a statistically significant difference (p = .002). The most common place of residence before the visit was home (56.2%), and the most common suspected origin of contagion was the home (38.3%), and the most common category of the suspected contagious person was family (49.6%). Conclusion: Cases of scabies were disproportionately common in women and older adults. The interval from symptom onset to diagnosis was long, and about half of the cases involved itching but no skin lesions. More than one-thirds of cases did not revisit for a follow-up after 2 weeks. In the overall results, unlike previous studies, factors related to home and family were frequently observed as epidemiological characteristics. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
9.The effects of different intensities of aerobic exercise for 8 weeks on neurogenesis, depression, and anxiety in young mice

		                        			 Purpose:
		                        			This study aimed to assess the impact of aerobic exercise at different intensities over an eight-week period on the expression and activation of cortical synaptic proteins, with the potential to reduce anxiety and improve memory in young mice. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			Seven-week-old C57BL/6 mice were subjected to treadmill exercises at low (n = 10), moderate (n = 10), and high intensity (n = 10) for eight weeks. Behavioral assessments were conducted to evaluate anxiety and cognitive function. To explore the underlying mechanisms, we measured the phosphorylated levels of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), cyclic adenosine monophosphate response-binding protein (CREB), protein kinase (AKT), adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK), synapsin (S9, S549, S609), and PSD-95 in the cortex, as these are associated with synaptic strength. Additionally, the expression of doublecortin (DCX), a neurogenic factor, was analyzed in the hippocampus. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			Exercise led to reductions in depressive and anxiety-related behaviors and elevated the levels of phosphorylated ERK, CREB, AKT, AMPK, synapsin (S9, S549, S609), and PSD-95 in the cortex of young mice. Furthermore, exercise increased DCX expression in the hippocampus. Moderate-intensity exercise yielded more pronounced effects than other intensities. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			The findings of this research indicate that consistent moderate-intensity exercise increases synaptic strength and reduces depression and anxiety in young mice by activating multiple factors.
