Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2025;66(2):201-204
The concept of "spirit" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) aligns closely with "the liver governs the designing of strategy". By exploring the relationship between the liver and executive function decline, it is proposed that prolonged liver constraint leads to indecisiveness in strategy designing, which is the initiating factor for executive function decline; liver blood deficiency causes difficulties in executing strategy, which forms an essential foundation for the progression of executive function decline; obstruction in the "liver-du mai-brain" pathway leads to unclear strategy designing, which accelerates executive function decline. This relationship is examined from the perspectives of TCM, modern medicine, and cognitive psychology, aiming to provide insights into addressing executive function decline through treatments focused on the liver.

Background/Aims:
Low educational attainment is a well-established risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in developed areas. However, the association between educational attainment and the risk of NAFLD is less clear in China.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study including over 200,000 Chinese adults across mainland China was conducted. Information on education level and lifestyle factors were obtained through standard questionnaires, while NAFLD and advanced fibrosis were diagnosed using validated formulas. Outcomes included the risk of NAFLD in the general population and high probability of fibrosis among patients with NAFLD. Logistic regression analysis was employed to estimate the risk of NAFLD and fibrosis across education levels. A causal mediation model was used to explore the potential mediators.
Results:
Comparing with those receiving primary school education, the multi-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for NAFLD were 1.28 (1.16 to 1.41) for men and 0.94 (0.89 to 0.99) for women with college education after accounting for body mass index. When considering waist circumference, the odds ratios (95% CIs) were 0.94 (0.86 to 1.04) for men and 0.88 (0.80 to 0.97) for women, respectively. The proportions mediated by general and central obesity were 51.00% and 68.04% for men, while for women the proportions were 48.58% and 32.58%, respectively. Furthermore, NAFLD patients with lower educational attainment showed an incremental increased risk of advanced fibrosis in both genders.
Conclusions
In China, a low education level was associated with a higher risk of prevalent NAFLD in women, as well as high probability of fibrosis in both genders.

The aim of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of primarily cultured astrocytes and microglia of different generations and then optimize the method for obtaining primary astrocytes and microglia effectively. Primarily cultured microglia were isolated and purified from the cortices of neonatal mice. The proliferation curve of mixed glia cells was measured by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, the proportion of astrocytes and microglia was detected by flow cytometry, and the polarization of the two types of glia cells was identified by immunofluorescence staining. Cell growth results showed that the mixed glia cells of P0 and P1 generation had the best proliferative activity; 97.3% of the high purity microglia could be obtained by mechanical shaking at 170 r/min for 30 min, and there was no significant difference in the morphology of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1) positive microglia and the proportion of M1 and M2 phenotype among the P0, P1 and P2 generations of microglia isolated by the above methods. Moreover, 95.7 % of the high purity astrocytes could be obtained by astrocyte cell surface antigen-2 (ACSA-2) magnetic beads separation, and there was no significant difference in the morphology of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positive astrocyte and the proportion of A1 and A2 phenotype among the P0, P1 and P2 generations of astrocyte isolated by the above methods. Taken together, this study observed the growth characteristics of primarily cultured microglia and astrocyte in vitro, and then proved the best generations for purifying microglia and astrocytes. Finally, we optimized the methods of obtaining microglia and astrocyte, and verified that continuous culture within 2 generations will not affect the functional phenotypes of glia cells. These results provide technical support for studying the molecular mechanism of inflammation-associated diseases in nervous system.

Objective:To review the scope of research on the application of managing cancer and living meaningfully (CALM) in cancer patient populations, and provide reference for follow-up research and clinical promotion and application. Methods:Using the research method of scope review, two evidence-based trained researchers independently conducted a blind literature search. A total of 12 databases were searched, including CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, China Biomedical Literature Database, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, CTNAHL, Embase, Scopus, Medline and EBSCO. The search time limit was from database establishment to September 26, 2022. Collected relevant literature on the application of CALM therapy to cancer patients, extracted data included in the literature, summarize and report research results. Results:A total of 2 089 articles were retrieved, and 13 were eventually included through the inclusion criteria, including 8 randomized controlled studies, 2 quasi experimental studies and 3 qualitative studies. The results showed that CALM therapy included 4 themes, 3 to 8 separate psychotherapy sessions, each lasting for 3 to 6 months for 30 to 60 minutes. It was a short and flexible evidence-based personalized psychotherapy method that was easily accepted by patients, could alleviate the negative emotions of patients with advanced cancer, and promote their mental health. There was no literature reports on the occurrence of adverse events related to CALM therapy. Conclusions:CALM therapy has a positive impact on cancer patients, with safety and feasibility. In the future, it is necessary to construct a specific, standard, and localized CALM therapy program, conduct large sample, high-quality research to verify the application effect of CALM therapy in cancer patients, and provide evidence-based basis for formulating the best CALM therapy program for cancer patients.
