BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
Isoflavones are estrogen-like compounds found in plants and their health effects remain equivocal. We investigated dietary isoflavone intake and its associated factors in Korean breast cancer survivors, with a comparison to cancer-free women.
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
The usual dietary intake of breast cancer survivors (n = 981, mean age 52 yrs) in 9 hospitals between 2012 and 2019 was assessed using 3-day food records or food frequency questionnaires (FFQs). They were age-matched to 2,943 cancer-free women who completed FFQs as part of a nationwide study conducted between 2012 and 2016. We used the flavonoid database of common Korean foods and the Phenol-Explorer database to estimate isoflavone intake. The contribution of each food or food group to the total isoflavone intake was calculated. The adjusted least-squares means of dietary isoflavone intake according to lifestyle and clinical factors were calculated using generalized linear models.
RESULTS:
Breast cancer survivors had a higher mean dietary isoflavone intake (23.59 mg/day) than cancer-free women (17.81 mg/day). Major food sources, including tofu, soybeans, and doenjang, contributed to over 70% of the isoflavone intake in both groups. When we estimated dietary isoflavone intake according to lifestyle characteristics, isoflavone intake increased with higher scores of adherence to the American Cancer Society dietary guidelines but decreased with increasing body mass index in both groups. Among cancer-free women, dietary isoflavone intake was higher among those who had never smoked and among dietary supplement users. Among breast cancer survivors, dietary isoflavone intakes did not vary with clinical characteristics, including time since surgery and estrogen receptor status.
CONCLUSION
Breast cancer survivors were more likely to consume isoflavones than agematched cancer-free women. Dietary isoflavone intake was associated with healthy lifestyle characteristics in women both with and without breast cancer. Further research is needed to understand the role of the higher isoflavone intake among breast cancer survivors compared to cancer-free women on their prognosis.

Recent studies have shown that cells in various tissues express vitamin D receptors, indicating that vitamin D deficiency could increase the prevalence of several diseases, including sarcopenia, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer. However, these studies were conducted in the West, and research on the correlation between vitamin D levels and sarcopenia is lacking in the East. This study aimed to examine the correlation between vitamin D levels and sarcopenia in older adults aged ≥65 years and contribute to the health of this population, which is prone to gradual decline due to falls or fractures.
Methods:
This cross-sectional investigation analyzed the data of 3,174 Korean adults aged ≥65 years, who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A diagnosis of sarcopenia was made in cases where the skeletal muscle mass was two standard deviations lower than the mean skeletal muscle mass of healthy adults aged 20–39 years; other cases were considered normal. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of blood vitamin D levels on sarcopenia.
Results:
Vitamin D deficiency was associated with a significantly increased probability of sarcopenia in both males (odds ratio [OR], 1.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.29–2.68) and females (OR, 1.79; 95% CI, 1.30–2.47).
Conclusion
This finding suggests that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels could reduce the risk of sarcopenia in older individuals. The reduced risk of sarcopenia would subsequently decrease falls, fractures, and mortality rates, thereby enhancing the health of older adults.

Purpose:
The partner and localizer of breast cancer 2 (PALB2) mutation is a predisposition to breast cancer development. However, limited clinical data are available for the Korean population. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the characteristics and oncological outcomes of patients with PALB2-mutated and non-mutated PALB2 in Korea.
Methods:
A total of 1,463 breast cancer (BRCA) 1/2 mutation-negative breast cancer underwent comprehensive multigene sequencing between 2016 and 2019 at Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Clinicopathological data and oncological results of PALB2 mutated patients were prospectively collected and compared with those of the non-mutated group.
Results:
PALB2 mutations were identified in 1.2% (17/1,463) of the patients. The median age at diagnosis was 46 (30–73) years, and the median tumor size was 1.8 (0.05–3.5) cm. All patients with PALB2 mutations had histologic grades II–III, and a triple-negative subtype was found in 23.5% (4/17); however, there were no significant differences in clinicopathological data between the groups. During the median follow-up time of 38.5 months, locoregional recurrence occurred in 4.2% (44/1,043), distant recurrence was reported in 3.0% (31/1,043), and contralateral breast cancer was diagnosed in 0.8% (9/1,043) of patients, with no significant difference observed between the groups. All-cause mortality was observed in 1.8% (19/1,028) of the non-mutated group and none in the PALB2 mutation group. However, survival analyses demonstrated no significant differences in all-cause mortality (p = 0.524) and recurrence-free survival (p = 0.319).
Conclusion
Clinicopathological features and oncological outcomes of PALB2 mutated breast cancer were not significantly different from those of non-mutated breast cancer in the Korean population.
