Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, is characterized by high mortality and recurrence rates. Common treatments include hepatectomy, liver transplantation, ablation therapy, interventional therapy, radiotherapy, systemic therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine(TCM). While exhibiting specific advantages, these approaches are associated with varying degrees of adverse effects. To alleviate patients' suffering and burdens, it is crucial to explore additional treatments and elucidate the pathogenesis of HCC, laying a foundation for the development of new TCM-based drugs. With emerging research on gut microbiota, it has been revealed that microbiota plays a vital role in the development of HCC by influencing intestinal barrier function, microbial metabolites, and immune regulation. TCM, with its multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway characteristics, has been increasingly recognized as a vital therapeutic treatment for HCC, particularly in patients at intermediate or advanced stages, by prolonging survival and improving quality of life. Recent global studies demonstrate that TCM exerts anti-HCC effects by modulating gut microbiota, restoring intestinal barrier function, regulating microbial composition and its metabolites, suppressing inflammation, and enhancing immune responses, thereby inhibiting the malignant phenotype of HCC. This review aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which gut microbiota contributes to the development and progression of HCC and highlight the regulatory effects of TCM, addressing the current gap in systematic understanding of the "TCM-gut microbiota-HCC" axis. The findings provide theoretical support for integrating TCM with western medicine in HCC treatment and promote the transition from basic research to precision clinical therapy through microbiota-targeted drug development and TCM-based interventions.

Objective: To analyze the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of upper urinary tract calculi patients combined with mild and moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) after ureteral stent implantation. Methods: One hundred and six BPH patients who were hospitalized for upper urinary tract calculi and had ureteral stents retained from January 2019 to December 2022 were selected and divided into 2 weeks group and 4 weeks group according to the time of removal of ureteral stents after surgery. Their general clinical data were analyzed and compared. International Prostatic Symptom Scale (IPSS), postoperative ureteral Stent Symptom Questionnaire (USSQ), and incidence of adverse events after ureteral stent removal were recorded before and after removal. Results: The scores of IPSS were significantly increased in all patients, and symptoms in urinary tract had improved significantly after discharge (P<0.05). Compared with the 2 weeks group, the USSQ score of the 4 weeks group was significantly increased (P<0.05). And no significant adverse event was observed in the 2 weeks group after the removal of ureteral sten. Conclusion: IPSS score and USSQ score increased significantly during stent implantation in BPH patients with lithiasis. And complications increased significantly over time. Following thorough clinical assessment, early ureteral stent removal demonstrates both safety and efficacy, representing an optimal therapeutic approach in selected cases.

Identification of metabolites of Danshen-Honghua herb pairs in isolated rat intestinal flora based on HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS technique. By incubating enterobacteria in isolated rats as well as inactivated enterobacteria in the incubation solution. The extracts of Danshen-Honghua herb pairs were added separately and co-incubated under anaerobic conditions. Animal experiments and protocols were approved by the Laboratory Animal Ethics Committee of Shaanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (approval number: TCM-2020-030-E05). A total of 14 compounds, including 5 prototypes and 9 metabolites, were identified in the isolated rat intestinal incubation fluid. In contrast, no metabolites were detected in the inactivated enterobacterial fluid, except for the prototype component. The results showed that the main components of the Danshensu, salvianolic acid B, rosmarinic acid, lithospermic acid, and hydroxysafflor yellow A, could be metabolized by the intestinal flora, and these active ingredients were mainly metabolized in the rat intestinal flora in isolation by hydroxylation, decarboxylation, deoxygenation, decarboxylation and dehydration in phase I, sulfate esterification and methylation in phase II. This proved that the Danshen-Honghua herb pair could be transformed into various metabolites by the action of rat intestinal flora, further clarifying the role of intestinal flora in the metabolic transformation of the active ingredients of Chinese medicine and laying the foundation for perfecting the potent substances of the pair.

OBJECTIVE:
To observe the expression of GABA receptor mRNA in different brain regions of the central nervous system in chronic inflammatory pain rats and the intervention effect of electroacupuncture (EA).
METHODS:
A total of 48 SPF male SD rats were randomly divided into a blank control group, a model control group, an EA group and a sham EA group, 12 rats in each group. The model of chronic inflammatory pain was established by injecting Freund's complete adjuvant into the foot. The EA group was treated with EA 28 days after the model establishment. The "Housanli" (ST 36) and "Kunlun" (BL 60) were selected and treated with dilatational wave, 2 Hz/100 Hz in frequency, 0.5-1.5 mA for 30 min; EA was given only once. In the sham EA group, the same acupoints were selected but the needles were only inserted into subcutaneous area; EA was connected for 30 min without electrical stimulation. The behavior changes of mechanical pain threshold and thermal pain threshold before model establishment, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 28 days after the model establishment as well as emotional behavior 29 days after the model establishment were observed; the relative expressions of GABA receptor mRNA in anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala and hypothalamus were observed.
RESULTS:
Compared with the blank control group, the change rates of mechanical pain threshold and thermal pain threshold in the model control group were decreased significantly 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 28 days after model establishment (<0.01); 29 days after model establishment, the movement distance and staying time in the central area of open field test in the model control group were decreased significantly (<0.05). After EA intervention, compared with the model control group and the sham EA group, the change rates of mechanical pain threshold and thermal pain threshold, as well as the movement distance and the staying time of central area were significantly increased in the EA group (<0.01, <0.05). Twenty-nine days after model establishment, the expression of GABA receptor mRNA in anterior cingulate cortex and hypothalamus was not significantly different among all groups (>0.05). Compared with the blank control group, the expression of GABA receptor mRNA in the amygdala was decreased significantly in the model control group (<0.01); compared with the model control group and the sham EA group, the expression of GABA receptor mRNA in amygdala was increased after intervention in the EA group (<0.01).
CONCLUSION
Single treatment of EA could significantly increase the mechanical pain threshold and thermal pain threshold, improve abnormal emotional behavior in rats with chronic inflammatory pain, which may be related to the increasing of expression of GABA receptor mRNA in the amygdala.

BACKGROUNDWith the progress of perinatal medicine and neonatal technology, more and more extremely low birth weight (ELBW) survived all over the world. This study was designed to investigate the short-term outcomes of ELBW infants during their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stay in the mainland of China.
METHODSAll infants admitted to 26 NICUs with a birth weight (BW) < l000 g were included between January l, 2011 and December 31, 2011. All the data were collected retrospectively from clinical records by a prospectively designed questionnaire. The data collected from each NICU transmitted to the main institution where the results were aggregated and analyzed. Categorical variables were performed with Pearson Chi-square test. Binary Logistic regression analysis was used to detect risk factors.
RESULTSA total of 258 ELBW infants were admitted to 26 NICUs, of whom the mean gestational age (GA) was 28.1 ± 2.2 weeks, and the mean BW was 868 ± 97 g. The overall survival rate at discharge was 50.0%. Despite aggressive treatment 60 infants (23.3%) died and another 69 infants (26.7%) died after medical care withdrawal. Furthermore, the survival rate was significantly higher in coastal areas than inland areas (53.6% vs. 35.3%, P = 0.019). BW < 750 g and GA < 28 weeks were the largest risk factors, and being small for gestational age was a protective factor related to mortality. Respiratory distress syndrome was the most common complication. The incidence of patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, retinopathy of prematurity was 26.2%, 33.7%, 6.7%, 48.1%, and 41.4%, respectively. Ventilator associated pneumonia was the most common hospital acquired infection during hospitalization.
CONCLUSIONSOur study was the first survey that revealed the present status of ELBW infants in the mainland of China. The mortality and morbidity of ELBW infants remained high as compared to other developed countries.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical value of tumor markers CEA, CA19-9, CA72-4 and CA242 in the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with gastric cancer.
METHODSOne hundred and sixty gastric cancer patients who had received treatment from 2002 to 2007 at the Beijing Cancer Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Blood samples were taken from patients upon admission to the hospital, and CEA, CA19-9, CA72-4, CA242 levels were detected. Statistical analysis was performed to identify the clinical value of these tumor markers in diagnosis and prognosis.
RESULTSOn initial diagnosis, the positive rates of CEA, CA19-9, CA72-4 and CA242 were 37.7%, 26.7%, 37.6% and 21.3%, respectively, and the positive rate of combined detection was 62.9%. CEA was more frequently positive in patients with lymph node metastasis (P=0.029); CA72-4 was more frequently positive in patients with vascular involvement and advanced stage (P=0.039, P=0.011). Multivaraite analysis showed that CA72-4 was an independent prognostic factor (P=0.012). Patients with positive CA72-4 carried a 2.147-fold increased risk of death than those with negative CA72-4. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that patients with positive CA19-9 or positive CA72-4 had worse survival than those with negative CA19-9 or CA72-4 (P=0.006, P=0.002).
CONCLUSIONSTumor markers including CEA, CA19-9, CA72-4 and CA242 have clinical significance and prognostic value in patients with gastric cancer. Combined detection of four tumor markers can increase the positive rate. CA72-4 is an independent prognostic factor. CA19-9 and CA72-4 are associated with the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer.

Objective To investigate the expression feature of peroxiredoxin Ⅲ in cervical lesions and to further understand the mechanism for cervical cancer development/progression.Methods Expression of peroxiredoxin Ⅲ was immunohistochemically detected in cervical cancer. In addition.cervical epithelia were transfected with recombinant adeno-associated virus vector containing human papillomavirus 16 E6/E7 and pemxiredoxin Ⅲ expression was detected by quantitative real time PCR and Westem blotting. Results Peroxiredoxin Ⅲ was significantly up-regulated in cervical cancer tissues.Nevertheless, expression of peroxiredoxin Ⅲ remained unchanged in cervical epitllelial cells after transfection. Conclusion It seems that Prx Ⅲ is not related to cervical cancer initiation. Up-regulation of peroxiredoxin Ⅲ in cervical cancer might be an active response to oxidative stress in malignant cells, which protects against oxidatiton-induced apoptosis.
