Background. Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability in the Philippines, rendering its survivors unable to cope well with activities of daily living, including sexual functioning. Sexual dysfunction is an under-recognized complication post-stroke, and mobility and communication barriers among those with aphasia can further contribute to sexual dysfunction, potentially affecting their quality of life.

Objective. To determine the changes in sexual functioning among patients with aphasia and the communication methods they used to compensate for language and communication deficits.

Method. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving patients (?30 years old, with 1 episode of stroke, with non-fluent aphasia) and their respective sexual partners. Data were gathered using a clinician-administered questionnaire based on previous studies. Outcomes included changes in libido, coital frequency, time of resumption of sexual activity, erectile/ orgasmic ability, sexual satisfaction, and alternative methods of communication.

Results. Forty participants were included comprising of 20 patients with aphasia and their respective sexual partners. There was a decline in sexual activity among the couples, with reduced frequency of sexual intercourse. Both patients and partners reported difficulties in expressing the desire for sexual activities, hindering initiation. There was noted difficulty in ascertaining the sexual experience of patients with aphasia (i.e., whether pleasure or pain), hindering maintenance and enjoyment of the sexual act. In response to the difficulties mentioned above, sexual innuendoes as communication strategies were described by the couples.

Conclusion. The study provides baseline local data on changes in sexual functioning among stroke patients with nonfluent aphasia and their sexual partners. Sexual rehabilitation is recommended in the holistic management of patients with aphasia to train couples develop compensatory techniques to adjust to the changes in their sexual lives.

The Global Assembly on Everyday Life, Gender, and Sexuality (GAELGS) gathered people from different walks of life around the globe who worked to advance gender and sexuality in several ways – film, research, educational programs, and services. The content organization was purposeful in creating a safe space for exchanging ideas and practices. The submission of materials for the conference, such as documentaries and short films, is more than research papers that reflect the desire of people to normalize sexuality as part of daily life more than a unique topic of intellectual discourse. However, the need to test practices and models to promote social change must be fostered by continuously offering safe venues for sharing and discussions, like GAELGS.

Background and Objective: The sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) are at risk for various health disparities. To address this, the World Health Organization (WHO) calls for the training of healthcare providers who demonstrate cultural competence. To facilitate this, studies have suggested the inclusion of SGM-specific constructs in the curriculum that is complemented with campus climate-related efforts. This study aimed to determine the degree of coverage of cultural competence towards the SGM constructs in the required curriculum and describe the campus climate towards the SGM of a dental school in the Philippines from the students' perspective. Methodology: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed. A survey questionnaire was developed and administered to determine the coverage of SGM-specific constructs. This was followed by semi-structured interviews to discuss the campus climate towards the SGM. Data collection utilized a twostage stratified random sampling method for the survey while a purposive sampling method was used for interviewing dental students enrolled in a private, non-sectarian school. Results and Conclusion Survey results show that the most reported covered concepts are the oral manifestations of sexually transmitted diseases and the use of inclusive terminologies. Interview responses reveal instances of inadvertent perpetuation of heteronormative ideologies, however, the campus climate is perceived as neutral towards the SGM. The integration of the two datasets reveals incongruences between the curricular coverage and the perceived campus climate. Nevertheless, findings imply that the dental curriculum remains largely objective and asexual. Additionally, the integration underscores the importance of complementing curricular content with an inclusive campus climate in developing cultural competence among dental students.

Ang muslim ay ang tumatalima sa Islam at katuruan nito sa pamamagitan ng pagtanggap o pagsasaksi ( ٱلشَّھَادَة ) sa kaisahan ( توحید ) ng Allah ( سُبْحَانَھُوَتَعَالَى ) at bunga nito ang isang muslim ay nagiging bahagi ng relihiyon ( دین ) ng kapayapaan sapagkat ang kapayapaan sa arabe ( سلام ) ay nag mula sa kaparehas na salitang ugat ng Islam, ang ( سِلم ). Ngunit paano bibigyan ng mukha ang kapayapaan sa mga baklang sasailalim sa rehiyong ito sa kulturang hindi hinihikayat (Haram) ang pagpapahayag (gender expression) ng pagiging bakla? Five key policy recommendations were generated from the presentations and discussions in the Global Assembly on Everyday Life, Gender, and Sexuality. The rich source of information supporting the recommendations was the exploration of effective methods of promoting social change through education and research from networks and partnerships. The movement created by collective and participatory approaches in policy development counters the limitations of some societies where gender and sexuality are taboo. Enabling laws is essential, but the implementing guidelines should consider the real-world experience and realize that adequate infrastructure, processes, and resources are necessary. Education of the people on gender and sexuality must start early in life to plant a seed to develop values that uphold respect for human rights and civic responsibility.

Background: Sexuality remains to be a sensitive issue in the Philippines, but it encompasses real problems that stroke patients and their partners continue to face. Sexual dysfunction, an under-recognized complication post-stroke, is caused by an interplay of physical, emotional, cognitive, and language impairments, in combination with psychosocial factors. Objectives: This study aimed to determine changes in sexual functioning (libido, coital frequency, sexual arousal, and sexual satisfaction) among stroke out-patients at the Philippine General Hospital and their sexual partners. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved patients (≥30 years old with 1 stroke episode), and their partners. Through individual interviews and questionnaires, data were gathered on general attitude toward sex, ability to address sexual issues with partner, fear of recurrence of stroke, unwillingness to participate in coitus, risk of depression, and level of happiness. Results: Twenty-nine patients and 23 partners participated. There was a statistically significant decrease in coital frequency post-stroke among patients (p<0.001) and partners (p<0.05). Majority reported lower level of libido, sexual arousal, and sexual satisfaction post-stroke. Participants unable to discuss sexual issues with partner were more likely to report sexual dissatisfaction (p<0.05). Those with higher scores on Zung’s depression scale were likely to be sexually dissatisfied (p<0.05). Level of happiness was moderately correlated with sexual satisfaction (r=0.51). Conclusion Sexual life of couples affected by stroke is commonly overlooked. There was a decline in libido, coital frequency, arousal, and sexual satisfaction among stroke patients and partners at the Philippine General Hospital.

PURPOSE: Although the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) can be affected by social changes, this association has not been well evaluated. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of ED through a 10-year-interval web-based survey using the previous database of same group of panels, with same methodology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We sent e-mails and surveyed the panels registered in the Internet survey agency. RESULTS: In total, 900 participants were recruited in 2016. The age-adjusted overall prevalences of self-reported ED (self-ED) and International Index of Erectile Function-5-assessed ED (IIEF-5-ED; score ≤21) in the 2016 study were 3.2% and 44.8%, respectively, which were lower than the prevalences of 8.1% (p=0.036) and 51.4% (p=0.323), respectively, in the 2006 study. The risk factors of IIEF-5-ED in their 20s and 30s in 2016 were psycho-social factors such as depression, low frequency of conversation about sex with sexual partner. The risk factors of IIEF-5-ED in their 40s to 60s in 2016 were organic factors, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, alcohol use, and self-reported premature ejaculation. CONCLUSIONS: Although the age-adjusted overall prevalence of self-ED has decreased during a decade, there was no difference in the age-adjusted overall prevalence of IIEF-5-ED. Psycho-social support may be important for young men with ED and overall healthcare can be helpful for elderly men with ED.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the levels of body image, sexual intimacy, and sexual satisfaction, and to explore factors affecting sexual intimacy and satisfaction among women within one year of mastectomy. METHODS: The present study was a cross-sectional survey and involved 101 women who had undergone mastectomy at a University hospital of D city, Korea. Measurement included the scales of body image, sexual intimacy, and sexual satisfaction. RESULTS: Mean age of the subjects was 51 years. Scores of the body image, sexual intimacy, and sexual satisfaction were 59.62, 90.69, and 69.04, respectively. Body image, sexual intimacy, and sexual satisfaction were significantly related to each other. Sexual intimacy was higher when women were of young age (β=−.32), had a shorter period since surgery (β=−.24), and with higher levels of body image (β=.37). Sexual satisfaction was higher when women had higher levels of body image (β=.19) and greater levels of sexual intimacy (β=.74). CONCLUSION: Higher levels of body image and greater levels of sexual intimacy were identified as the significant factors influencing sexual satisfaction among these women. Future research with a mixed-method research is needed to gain a deep understanding of the sexuality between women and their husbands.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sexual knowledge, attitude, and satisfaction of sex education in university freshman. METHODS: The participants were 275 freshman students under the age of 20 years old. Data were collected in 2017 using a self-report questionnaire. RESULTS: The average scores of participants' sexual knowledge, attitude, and satisfaction of sex education were 24.22±4.94 out of 38 points, 90.81±15.86 out of 168 points, and 11.05±3.08 out of 20 points, respectively. With respect to the demographic characteristics, there were statically significant differences in sexual knowledge according to chances of relationship engagement (F=6.19, p=.002) and residence type (F=3.67, p=.013). Both sexual attitudes and satisfaction of sex education showed significant differences by major (t=3.20, p=.002; t=2.65, p=.009), types of high school (F=3.39, p=.019; F=3.53, p=.015), and interest in previous sex education during teenage years (F=2.88, p=.015; F=6.22, p<.001). Sexual knowledge showed a statistically significant correlation with attitudes (r=.153, p=.011). CONCLUSION: There is insufficient sex information available for college students. It is necessary in the future to develop sex education programs that are matched to college students' needs.

Major improvements in health care have allowed people in the modern era to lead longer, healthier, and more active lives. The current generation of over-60s are more active than previous generations at the same age. In South Korea, the elderly population (65 years of age or older) has grown to more than 14% of the general population, meaning that we are already in the era of an ‘aged society’ and are transitioning into a super-aged society. Therefore, health issues in the elderly population cannot be ignored, and should be adequately addressed as soon as possible. Sexual health has become an important issue in the elderly that cannot be neglected, according to studies on sexual attitudes and behavior in older adults. As the quality of health improves in the elderly population, requests for proper sexual education and sexual health-related services have become more common. This pattern of increased sexual activity, partially driven by pharmacological advances in the treatment of sexual dysfunction and hormonal replacement products, has also led to increases in drug use and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Responses to sexual health and education issues for the elderly currently remain ill-structured, as the significance of these issues is often ignored, largely due to incorrect assumptions about sexuality and sexual health among the elderly. Stronger requirements should be implemented for properly structured education and management systems regarding awareness, risk perception, and preventive strategies for safe sex among the elderly population in Korea.
