1.Fostering self-care for Filipino nurse educators: A policy paper

Lack of self-care has strongly been associated with stress and burnout among nurse educators. It has long been a silent battle as
they struggle with academia, clinical practice, and research. Challenges identified that contribute to lack of self-care are heavy
workloads, limited facilities for instruction, lack of support for professional advancement, and limited self-care facilities. In support
of the Alma Ata declaration in empowering and assisting individuals to obtain knowledge, skills, and resources to preserve health,
this paper advocates the need to foster and establish a self-care culture for nurse educators in the Philippines through the Reflect,
Recharge, Revive Program. The program framework of Reflect through self-assessment and self-reflection, Recharge through
self-care education and training, and Revive for sustainability are collected from various programs already used by some nursing
schools that have been proven effective in their respective organizations. Its integration into the current policies and guidelines,
including policy frameworks of nursing institutions, will help address stress and burnout associated with a lack of self-care among
nurse educators. As a healthy policy, it is believed to positively affect nursing education, especially in decreasing faculty turnover
and increasing job performance and self-fulfillment in teaching.

2.Nurses and Nursing Students' Recognition of Good Instruction

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify and assess from nursing students and nurses in the clinical field what constitute good instruction, through the review of nursing students' opinions and clinical field demands.METHODS: The study design was used Creswell's exploratory sequential design by collecting and analyzing qualitative data obtained from interviews and then analysis of quantitative data. The participations were 79 seniors in nursing schools and 85 nurses with less than three years of clinical experience. The data were collected through individual interviews and analyzed based on Elo and Kyngäs's content analysis method. The quantitative data were collected using the questionnaire developed based on qualitative results and analyzed by SPSS 23.0 program and Importance Performance Analysis (IPA).RESULTS: The results showed that IPA extracted seven items with high importance but low satisfaction: “nursing fads and trends,” “teacher-learner communication and reflection,” “materials used in clinical settings such as monitoring results and test results,” “special presentations by experienced practitioners,” “instruction assures learners' comprehension,” “accurate and detailed evaluation standards” and “feedback on homework and exam.”CONCLUSION: The factors comprising good instruction were verified, and the necessity for additional efforts to improve high importance and low performance factors was noted. Therefore, this study can serve as a guide for nursing education facilities and educators in developing of a thorough education system with excellent instruction designed to achieve an ideal nursing education.

3.Impact of Education on School Nurses' Knowledge of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: School nurses’ knowledge of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has not been evaluated. We aimed to investigate school nurses’ knowledge of IBD and determine whether education could improve this knowledge. METHODS: School nurses were invited to complete self-reported questionnaires on IBD. Then, IBD specialists from tertiary referral hospitals provided a 60-minute lecture with educational brochures on two occasions, with a 3-month interval. Within 6 months after the educational interventions, school nurses were asked to complete the same IBD questionnaire via e-mail. RESULTS: Among 101 school nurses who were invited to participate, 54 nurses (53.5%) who completed two consecutive questionnaires were included in this study (median age, 45 years; range, 25 to 59 years; 100% female); 11.1% and 7.4% of the study participants had no knowledge regarding ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, respectively. They had heard of IBD most frequently from doctors (33.3%), followed by internet sources (25.9%). After 6 months, the number of nurses who could explain IBD to students with over 30% confidence increased from 24 (44.5%) to 42 (77.8%) (p < 0.001). Most nurses (81.5%) reported that the educational intervention was helpful for managing students with abdominal pain or diarrhea. The number of students who received IBD-related welfare services from the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education doubled when compared with the corresponding number during the prior educational year. CONCLUSIONS: There is room for improvement in school nurses’ knowledge of IBD. A systematic educational program on IBD should be implemented for these nurses.

4.Awareness and Competency of Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms Infection Control in Nursing Students with Clinical Practice

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify awareness and competency for Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms (MDRO) infection control in nursing students with experience of clinical practice.METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from March 2019 to May 2019 by including 231 nursing students in four nursing schools located in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do. The data were collected using self-report questionnaires.RESULTS: The awareness and the competency for Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) infection control were lower than that of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The agreement between the awareness and the competency of MDRO infection control in participants was low with regard to isolation, contact precautions, and disinfection for MRSA. Also, it was low with respect to disinfection, isolation, contact precautions, and carrier identification for CRE. The awareness and the competency of MDRO infection control exhibited significant positive correlation.CONCLUSION: The infection control competency is required to prevent MDRO infection. In order to enhance the infection control competency, it is important to raise awareness about MDRO infection control by providing education based on the guidelines and the principles of infection control.

5.Current Status of End-of-Life Care Education in Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the current status of end-of-life (EoL) care education of the undergraduate nursing curriculum and senior students' EoL care experience and competency.METHODS: A survey was conducted with 41 nursing schools and 622 senior nursing students on June 2018. The questionnaire consisted of 38 items on teaching regarding EoL care and 17 items on EoL care competencies based on the suggestions made by the American Nurses Association.RESULTS: Only 20% among 41 nursing schools opened an EoL care course as an elective, and the course was taken by 5.1% students. Of 622 students, 70.7% witnessed death of patients during their clinical training, but 74.8% received no or little education on EoL care from their clinical training instructors. Two of 38 education contents on EoL care were taught in class for over 80% of the students. All students scored below 3 points (2.31±0.66) for all 17 competencies, which means that they cannot perform EoL care.CONCLUSION: This study showed that there was a serious deficiency in undergraduate nursing education on EoL care. Accordingly, most nursing students who would graduate soon considered themselves incapable of performing EoL care. Nurses experience death and dying as a part of their practice and should be prepared to provide adequate EoL care. Therefore, it is urgent to improve EoL care training in the undergraduate nursing education.

6.Transition of Simulation-Based Learning in Nursing Schools: A Concept Analysis

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the transition of simulation-based learning (SBL) in nursing schools.METHODS: The study was conducted in accordance with Walker and Avant's conceptual analysis process. We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and RISS (Korean Education and Research Information Service) databases, resulting in nine studies for an in-depth review.RESULTS: The attributes of transition of SBL include (1) preparing for a professional role, (2) practicing in a real clinical setting, and (3) progressing toward expected competency. Antecedents of the concept include novice status, changing roles, clinical experience in controlled settings, and expected competency in the clinical setting.CONCLUSION: The transition of SBL includes the important feature of progression toward expected competency. Further research is needed to identify graduate nurses' experiences during this transition to establish a strategy for improving it and developing a measurement tool that reflects attributes of the concept.

7.Factors Influencing on Self-directed Learning in Clinical Practice of Nursing Students

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of nursing students' belongingness and self-esteem on self-directed learning in clinical practice. METHODS: The participants were 163 senior nursing students. Using a structured-questionnaire, data were collected from September to October 2016. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: Self-directed learning in clinical practice had statistically significant correlation with belongingness (r=.47, p<.001) and self-esteem (r=.52, p<.001). Factors affecting self-directed learning were self-esteem (β=.38, p<.001), belongingness (β=.30, p<.001), and more than 5 members of clinical practice (β=.15, p=.017). These three variables explained 35% of self-directed learning. CONCLUSION: In order to enhance self-directed learning in clinical practice of nursing students, nursing schools should provide training to increase self-esteem in nursing students. In addition, an appropriate number of students should be considered, so that they can have a well-developed sense of belonging to clinical practice.

8.An Estimation of Supply and Demand for Primary Healthcare Nursing Workforce in the North Korean Region after Korean Reunification

PURPOSE: This study was done to estimate supply and demand for nursing workforce to provide community-based primary healthcare in the North Korean region to cost-efficiently narrow the health gap between the two Koreas in case of a Korean reunification. METHODS: To understand the nursing education system and current state of nursing workforce in North Korea, the authors interviewed six North Korean defectors who had worked as nurses in North Korea. Based on the interview results and literature review, the supply and demand for the primary healthcare nursing workforce that would be needed after Korean reunification were estimated RESULTS: Currently, a total of 2,100 to 2,700 North Korean nurses were estimated to have graduated from nursing schools with a 2 year curriculum or completed 6-month military nurse training courses every year. The projected number of nurses in demand to provide primary health care ranged from 84,160 to 105,200 and the shortage would be between 31,586 and 52,626. CONCLUSION: An active utilization of the North Korean nursing workforce to improve the health of North Koreans after reunification will be the best way to reduce the reunification cost which will be inflicted mainly on South Korea.

9.Development and Effects of the Self-determination Improvement Program for Nursing Students' Professional Competence Enhancement

PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to develop a self-determination improvement program for enhancing nursing students' professional competence and to evaluate effects of the intervention on nursing professionalism, communication skills, and career decision-making autonomy among nursing students. METHODS: The study was in a pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2 for a nonequivalent control group design. The participants were 56 students enrolled a nursing school or college (experimental group: 28; control group: 28). The self-determination improvement program was provided in 12 sessions over 4 weeks. Data was collected from August to September 2018. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 25.0 program with χ² test, Fisher's exact test, the independent t-test, and repeated measurement ANOVA. RESULTS: Participants receiving the self-determination improvement program reported increased nursing professionalism, communication skills, and career decision-making autonomy that was significantly different from those in the control group. CONCLUSION: Our study findings suggest that the self-determination improvement program could be effective for enhancing career decision-making autonomy by strengthening nursing students' professionalism and communication skills. Nursing educational program based on self-determination may be helpful for nursing students who need to prepare themselves as competent nurses in future profession.

10.Patient Safety Teaching Competency of Nursing Faculty.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate patient safety teaching competency of nursing faculty and the extent of teaching patient safety topics in the nursing curriculum. METHODS: A national survey was conducted with full-time nursing faculty in 4-year nursing schools. Regional quota sampling method was used. An online survey was sent to 1,028 nursing faculty and 207 of them were completed. Among the 207, we analyzed data from 184 participants. The revised Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analyses. RESULTS: The faculty's self-confidence was lower than their perceived importance of patient safety education. The mean score of teaching patient safety was 3.52±0.67 out of 5, and the contents were mostly delivered through lectures. The extent of faculty's teaching varied depending on faculty's clinical career, teaching subjects, participation in practicum courses, and previous experience of patient safety education. The significant predictors of the extent of teaching patient safety were the faculty's self-confidence in teaching patient safety (β=.39) during clinical practicum, their perceived importance of patient safety education during lectures (β=.23), and the teaching subject (β=.15). CONCLUSION: To enhance the competency of nursing faculty for effective patient safety education, a patient safety education program tailored to faculty characteristics should be developed and continuously provided for faculty. In addition, it is necessary to improve patient safety curriculum, strengthen clinical and school linkages, and utilize various education methods in patient safety education.
