RATIONALE
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in fair-skinned populations. Overall, strategies focus on modifiable risk factors such as reducing ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure through physical, topical or systemic protection. Currently, data on knowledge, attitude and practices of Filipino patients on UV index in relation to sun protection is unavailable.
OBJECTIVESThe objective of this study is to improve sunscreen use among patients seen in a tertiary hospital in Manila, specifically after UV index education.
METHODOLOGY AND POPULATIONThe study will be conducted among patients at the outpatient department of the University of Santo Tomas Hospital, Department of Dermatology, after UV index education. Patients who will be included are aged 18 to 65 years old, belonging to both sexes and able to understand English or Filipino. The exclusion criteria includes children, elderly greater than the age of 65, prisoners, mentally handicapped or those with incurable diseases.

With the rapid development of nuclear medicine, the number of nuclear medical staff has increased a lot in the past few years in China. Close-range operations, such as preparation and injections of radiopharmaceuticals, are usually carried out in nuclear medicine department. And the use of unsealed radionuclides may also create internal exposure risk. So, occupational exposure of nuclear medical staff is a main issue of occupational health management in China. In this paper, the occupational exposure level and requirements for radiation protection of nuclear medical staff are introduced to provide references for the related work that radiological health technical institutions carry out.

4.Investigate the thyroid function of radiation workers and analysis of influence factors.

Objective: To analyze the thyroid condition and influencing factors of radiation workers, and to provide scientific basis for radiation protection management. Methods: In April 2020, 4308 radiation workers from October 1, 2017 to September 30, 2019 were collected for occupational health examination in Hangzhou Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment Hospital, the data included basic information, Thyroid hormone level and thyroid color doppler ultrasound results. The thyroid status of radiation workers in different subgroups was compared. The influencing factors of Thyroid nodule were analyzed by multiple logistic regression. Results: 616 radiation workers had abnormal thyroid gland (14.3%, 616/4308) . The main manifestations of thyroid gland abnormality were abnormal Thyroid nodule (5.1%, 220/4308) and abnormal TSH level (7.1%, 308/4308) . Compared with the male radiation workers, the abnormal rate of Thyroid nodule, T3 and Tsh in female radiation workers was higher (P<0.05) , and the abnormal rate of Thyroid nodule, T3 and T4 increased with the increase of working age (P<0.05) . Radiation Workers in non-rated medical institutions and private medical institutions had the highest detection rate of Thyroid nodule (P<0.05) , and there was no significant difference in thyroid abnormalities among Workers (P<0.05) . By multiple logistic regression analysis, Sex (female) , age and institution type (private) were all independent risk factors for Thyroid nodule (95% CI: 1.548~2.763、1.002~1.030, P<0.05) . Conclusion: Ionizing radiation can cause thyroid damage in radiation workers, so we should pay more attention to the radiation protection management of female, high age, private and district medical organizations, so as to protect the health of radiation workers.

5.Analysis on individual dosage monitoring of some interventional radiology staffs in Tianjin City from 2016 to 2020.

Objective: To investigate the individual external dose level of some interventional radiology staffs from 2016 to 2020 in Tianjin City. Methods: All 2068 interventional radiology staffs who were included in the work of the Radiation Monitoring Project from 2016 to 2020 were selected as study subjects in March 2021. The individual dose monitoring results of interventional radiology staffs of different ages, working years, time and medical institutions were analyzed. Results: Among 2068 interventional radiology workers, 1406 (67.99%) were male and 662 (32.01%) were female. The age was 44.6 (39.2, 50.3) years, and the working years was 10.5 (4.3, 14.6) years. The annual effective doses per capita of 40-49 age group and ≥50 age group were higher than that of 30-39 age group (P<0.05) . The annual effective dose per capita of 5-9 working years was higher than that of <5 working years, and the annual effective dose per capita of 10-29 working years was higher than that of 5-9 working years (P<0.05) . The median per capita annual effective dose of the interventional radiology staffs was 0.164 mSv. There were 1976 interventional radiology staffs with an annual effective dose of <0.50 mSv/a (95.6%) . The collective dose distribution ration SR(0.5) was 41.1%. The difference of effective dose per capita in each year was statistically significant (H=19.23, P<0.05) . The per capita annual effective dose of interventional radiology staffs in tertiary medical institutions was higher than that in secondary medical institutions, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05) . Conclusion: The personal dose of interventional radiology staffs in Tianjin City is at a low level. It is necessary to emphasize the radiation hazard protection of interventional radiology staffs in tertiary medical institutions, 40-49 years old, ≥50 years old age groups and 5-9, 10-29 working years groups.

6.Effects of exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation on changing platelets: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND:
Numerous studies have concentrated on high-dose radiation exposed accidentally or through therapy, and few involve low-dose occupational exposure, to investigate the correlation between low-dose ionizing radiation and changing hematological parameters among medical workers.
METHODS:
Using a prospective cohort study design, we collected health examination reports and personal dose monitoring data from medical workers and used Poisson regression and restricted cubic spline models to assess the correlation between changing hematological parameters and cumulative radiation dose and determine the dose-response relationship.
RESULTS:
We observed that changing platelet of 1265 medical workers followed up was statistically different among the cumulative dose groups (P = 0.010). Although the linear trend tested was not statistically significant (P

We concluded that although the exposure dose was below the limit, medical workers exposed to low-dose ionizing radiation for a short period of time might have increased first and then decreased platelets, and there was a dose-response relationship between the cumulative radiation dose and platelets changing.

Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the association between occupational radiation exposure and changes in thyroid hormone levels among medical radiation workers.
Methods:
This retrospective cohort study included 2,946 radiation workers from 20 Guangzhou hospitals. Data on general characteristics, participant radiation dosimetry, and thyroid function test results [thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroid hormone (T4)] were extracted from dosimetry and medical records. The generalized estimating equation was used to evaluate the trend of changes in thyroid hormone levels over time and was adjusted for age, gender, and occupation.

8.Design and Test of Automatic Dispensing and Injecting System for Positron Radiopharmaceuticals.

Objective To design a novel automatic dispensing and injecting system of positron radiopharmaceuticals,for precise dose dispensing,simplified operation,and reduction of occupational radiation exposure. Methods The automatic dispensing and injecting system was fabricated with tungsten alloy as the shielding material.The performance and radiation protection of the device were assessed. Results The total time of injection using the automatic dispensing and injecting system was about 60 s.The ratio of successful injection in stability test was 100%.The deviation of the dispensing dose with the system was ≤3%.With the tungsten alloy shield(40 mmPb of the cabinet,60 mmPb of the countertop,15 mmPb of the protective shield,and 50 mmPb of the inbuilt jar for radiopharmaceuticals),the average dose rate at 30 cm from the device was 1.44 μSv/h,and the radiation dose at the operator's extremity was reduced by 99%. Conclusions This automatic dispensing and injecting system of positron radiopharmaceuticals is easy to operate with precise dispensing dose.It is safe and meets the requirements of radiation protection.

9.Clinical efficacy and radiation exposure analysis of vertebroplasty and curved vertebroplasty in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture.

OBJECTIVE:
Taking the classic bilateral puncture vertebroplasty as a reference, to evaluate the clinical efficacy of vertebroplasty of the curved-angle puncture device, analyze the radiation exposure of patients and surgeons during the operation and summarize the protective measures.
METHODS:
The clinical data of 49 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures admitted from March 2018 to September 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the different surgical puncture methods, 49 patients were divided into vertebroplasty group (using classic bilateral puncture) and curved vertebroplasty group (using curved angle puncture). Among them, there were 26 cases in vertebroplasty group, including 7 males and 19 females, aged (73.25±6.36) years, 2 cases in thoracic segment, 21 cases in thoracolumbar segment, and 3 cases in lumbar segment. In curved vertebroplasty group, there were 23 cases, including 6 males and 17 females, aged (73.09±6.52) years, 3 cases in thoracic segment, 19 cases in thoracolumbar segment, and 1 case in lumbar segment. The operation time and the amount of injected bone cement in the two groups were recorded. Visual analogue scale (VAS) and modified Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were respectively used to assess the pain degree and lumbar function, the postoperative bone cement leakage or other complications were observed. The radiation doses of the two groups of patients and surgeons were compared.
RESULTS:
All 49 patients were followed up for 10-22 (14.55±3.83) months. Eleven cases in vertebroplasty group and 9 cases in curved vertebroplasty group occurred bone cement leakage after surgery, and there was no statistically significant difference between two groups. VAS scores of vertebroplasty group were 6.23±0.68 before operation and 1.69±0.47 at 1 day after operation, respectively, modified ODI were (72.59±3.25)% and (33.59±2.85)%. The preoperative and postoperative VAS scores of curved vertebroplasty group were 6.46±0.56 and 1.57±0.49, respectively, modified ODI were (73.21±3.18)% and (33.17±2.37)%. The postoperative pain degree and lumbar function of the two groups were significantly improved, but the difference between the groups was not statistically significant. The operation time of curved vertebroplasty group and vertebroplasty group were (17.27±9.58) min and(23.19±8.56) min, and the amount of injected bone cement were (4.91±1.49) ml and (6.58±1.42) ml. Obviously, curved vertebroplasty group has more advantages in operation time and the amount of injected bone cement. In curved vertebroplasty group, the radiation dose of the operator was (0.53±0.05) mSv and the patient was (10.64±1.65) mSv;in vertebroplasty group, the operator was (0.59±0.08) mSv andthe patient was (13.52±1.81) mSv. The radiation dose of patients in curved vertebroplasty group was significantly lower than that of the vertebroplasty group, but there was no statistically significant difference in the operator between two groups.
CONCLUSION
Both puncture methods can achieve satisfactory clinical results, but curved angle puncture can optimize the distribution of bone cement and reduce the radiation dose of patients.

10.Circadian effects of ionizing radiation on reproductive function and clock genes expression in male mouse.

BACKGROUND:
Exposure to the ionizing radiation (IR) encountered outside the magnetic field of the Earth poses a persistent threat to the reproductive functions of astronauts. The potential effects of space IR on the circadian rhythms of male reproductive functions have not been well characterized so far.
METHODS:
Here, we investigated the circadian effects of IR exposure (3 Gy X-rays) on reproductive functional markers in mouse testicular tissue and epididymis at regular intervals over a 24-h day. For each animal, epididymis was tested for sperm motility, and the testis tissue was used for daily sperm production (DSP), testosterone levels, and activities of testicular enzymes (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and acid phosphatase (ACP)), and the clock genes mRNA expression such as Clock, Bmal1, Ror-α, Ror-β, or Ror-γ.
RESULTS:
Mice exposed to IR exhibited a disruption in circadian rhythms of reproductive markers, as indicated by decreased sperm motility, increased daily sperm production (DSP), and reduced activities of testis enzymes such as G6PDH, SDH, LDH, and ACP. Moreover, IR exposure also decreased mRNA expression of five clock genes (Clock, Bmal1, Ror-α, Ror-β, or Ror-γ) in testis, with alteration in the rhythm parameters.
CONCLUSION
These findings suggested potential health effects of IR exposure on reproductive functions of male astronauts, in terms of both the daily overall level as well as the circadian rhythmicity.
