INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and has a deleterious effect on dermatological conditions, such as skin cancers, hidradenitis suppurativa and psoriasis. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a pharmacist-led smoking cessation clinic in reducing cigarette smoking at a tertiary referral dermatology centre. We described the impact of this clinic to provide guidance on how such a model could be further improved and implemented more widely. METHODS: In this single-centre, retrospective study, 74 currently smoking patients who received counselling at a structured smoking cessation clinic between January 2010 and March 2013 were identified. Information on baseline demographic characteristics and detailed past medical history, including smoking history, was collected. Follow-up was conducted at two weeks and three months. RESULTS: At the first follow-up at two weeks, which was attended by 57 patients, 9 (15.8%) had stopped smoking and 26 (45.6%) showed reduction in the number of cigarette sticks smoked per day, with an average reduction of 4.1 cigarette sticks per day. However, a few patients also reported no change or increased number of cigarette sticks smoked per day following counselling. CONCLUSION A structured pharmacist-led smoking cessation clinic is effective and can be made a part of the holistic management of dermatological conditions.

Objective: To systematically analyze the correlation between psoriasis and erectile dysfunction (ED). METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library, EMbase, PubMed, OVID, Medline, VIP, WanFang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM via SinoMed) for the published literature about the relationship between psoriasis and ED up to June 2016. According to inclusion and exclusion criteria, two researchers respectively extracted the relevant data and made a meta-analysis on the correlation of psoriasis with ED and IIEF-5 scores using the Review Manager 5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 6 studies were included in this analysis. The analysis with the fixed-effects model revealed a significant correlation between psoriasis and ED (OR = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.53－2.40, P <0.01), and that on 3 of the studies with the random-effects model showed that the IIEF-5 scores were significantly lower in psoriasis patients than in non-psoriasis males (MD = －3.11, 95% CI: －4.85－－1.37, P <0.01). CONCLUSIONS There is a certain correlation between psoriasis and ED. Psoriasis patients may have a higher incidence of ED though it is to be further confirmed by more higher-quality studies.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease involving several systems. Recent epidemiological studies show that psoriasis is closely related to erectile dysfunction (ED) and may be an independent factor of ED. Psoriasis-induced ED may be associated with vascular endothelial injury, oxidative stress, mental depression, and so on. An insight into the incidence and pathogenesis of psoriasis-related ED will help to improve psoriasis patients' early understanding of ED, prevent its development and progression, and improve the patients' quality of life.

Knowledge of both the common and atypical presentations of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated dermatoses may be helpful in arousing suspicion of HIV, especially in patients with no reported risk factors. Herein, we report the case of an otherwise healthy, nonpromiscuous 29-year-old man who presented to our institution with an eight-week history of plaques with oyster shell-like scales on the trunk, extremities and genital area. The plaques were associated with fever, and intermittent knee pain and swelling. Initial diagnostic tests were suggestive of drug hypersensitivity syndrome, and the patient's condition improved with treatment using oral prednisone. However, the lesions recurred when the dose of prednisone was tapered, even after the culprit drug had long been discontinued. Repeat skin punch biopsy and arthrocentesis revealed a diagnosis of psoriasis vulgaris with psoriatic arthritis. Due to the atypical presentation of psoriasis, the patient was counselled to undergo HIV testing, which came back positive. Clinicians should be attuned to the skin signs heralding HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, in order to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment.

OBJECTIVETo explore the therapeutic effect of auricular therapy combined with optimized Yinxieling Formula on psoriasis vulgaris.

METHODSA randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial on 84 outpatients with psoriasis vulgaris was conducted. The patients were randomized to a treatment group (43 cases treated by auricular therapy combined with optimized Yinxieling Formula) and a control group (41 cases treated by optimized Yinxieling Formula alone) according to a random number generated by SPSS 17.0 software. The treatment duration for both groups was 8 weeks. The therapeutic effect was comprehensively measured by the primary outcome measure [Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) reduction rate] and the secondary outcome measure [PASI, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS)]. The outcomes of both groups were obtained and compared before and after the intervention.

RESULTSThe PASI reduction rate in the treatment group was 74.4% (32/43), which was higher than that in the control group (36.6%, 15/41, P<0.01). The PASI scores decreased in both groups after treatment and was lower in the treatment group compared with the control group P<0.01). With stratified analysis, there were significant differences between the PASI scores in the following subgroups: age 18-30, baseline PASI>10 and stable stage (P<0.05). DLQI decreased in both groups on some categories after treatment, but there were no significant differences between the two groups in SDS, SAS and VAS (P >0.05). No obvious adverse reactions were found in either group.

CONCLUSIONThe therapeutic effect of auricular therapy combined with Optimized Yinxieling Formula was superior to Optimized Yinxieling Formula alone with no obvious adverse reaction.

Cases of psoriasis complicated with venous thromboembolism are rarely reported. Here, we report two cases and review the current literature on the subject. Two patients with long-standing severe psoriasis presented with chest pain, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. The patients were diagnosed using lung ventilation-perfusion scans or computed tomographic pulmonary angiography. Anticoagulation or thrombolytic therapy was initiated, and long-term continuous anticoagulation with warfarin prevented any recurrences.

Low level laser or light treatment on the various clinical condition is getting considerable attention now. However, there has been no report about the clinical effect of low level polarized polychromatic noncoherent light (LPPL) on the inflammatory skin disease. We experienced a case of acrodermatitis continua in a pregnant woman refractory to any conventional treatment including the most potent topical steroid. She was successfully treated with LPPL. LPPL could be a possible treatment modality producing substantial clinical result in inflammatory skin condition without any side-effect.

OBJECTIVETo analyze and investigate the rules for drug utilization of Chinese medicine for the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris with blood-heat syndrome.

METHODSThe literatures that met the following inclusion criteria were screened out from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) from January 1998 to December 2008, including the compositions and dosages of the recipes reported completely and accurately, the sample size being [Symbol: see text] 30 cases and the total effective rate being [Symbol: see text] 70%.

RESULTSIn total, 289 papers meeting the inclusion criteria were retrieved, involving 301 recipes; in which 111 recipes consisting of 145 individual drugs were the function for clearing the heat, accounting for 52.84%. The three drugs with the highest utilized frequency were Radix Rehmanniae, Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi and Cortex Moutan. Meridian adscription of the drugs was mainly the Gan-meridian.

CONCLUSIONThere were rules for the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris of blood-heat syndrome with Chinese medicine prescriptions.

The point prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) among Korean adults visiting the Health Service Center for health check-ups was assessed. AD was diagnosed based on the questionnaires filled by patients and through physical examination by dermatologists. A total of 3,563 persons completed the questionnaires, and 2,032 persons were examined by the dermatologists. According to the questionnaires, the prevalence of AD was 7.1%, and from the dermatologists' examination, it was 2.6% overall, which decreased with age significantly. The prevalence in men was higher than that of women. Grading the severity of AD according to their eczema area and severity index scores, 70.6% were classified as being mild, 25.5% moderate, and 3.9% severe. Interestingly, concomitance of psoriasis and AD was found in 0.5% of those examined by the dermatologists. Our results suggest that AD is one of the most common skin diseases not only in children but also in adults in Korea.
