Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes and has become one of the leading causes of blindness and visual impairment in diabetes patients. The pathogenesis of DR is multifaceted, involving inflammation, oxidative stress, neurovascular abnormalities, and other factors that present potential targets for disease management interventions.Currently,anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)drugs serve as the primary treatment for advanced stages of DR when irreversible neurovascular damage and visual impairment have occurred.Additionally, some patients show poor or no response to anti-VEGF treatment. There is a lack of early intervention options for the initial phases of the disease. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel local or systemic therapies based on the underlying mechanisms of DR to enable early prevention and treatment with the aim of preserving patients' vision.Medications targeting various pathways including anti-inflammatory agents(corticosteroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs),neurotrophic and neuroprotective drugs, drugs modulating biochemical pathways, antioxidant phytochemicals, and gene therapy can complement each other in terms of therapeutic effects to benefit a larger number of individuals affected by DR.This article reviews previous research reports on the pathogenesis, drug treatment methods, and potential therapeutic targets associated with DR in order to provide guidance for clinical practice.

Chinese Journal of Health Statistics 2024;41(3):409-413
Objective In clinical follow-up studies,it is the most common method to quantify treatment differences between groups using a hazard ratio(HR).Moreover, restricted mean survival time(RMST)has attracted more and more attention. However, the current statistical inference method based on RMST is mainly used for the comparison between two groups. Methods In this paper, three RMST tests between multiple groups are proposed, including naive, logarithmic transformation and complementary logarithmic transformation.Monte Carlo simulations were performed to evaluate the type I error and power, and a case study was performed. Results Based on the type I errors obtained by Monte Carlo simulation and the test performance results,it is shown that the proposed RMST test can deal with the problem of multiple sets of comparisons, especially the complementary logarithmic transformation method is the most robust. Conclusions For the multi-group comparison of survival data,if the time scale index is considered, the RMST multi-group test by the complementary logarithmic transformation method is recommended.

Alzheimer′s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease with insidious onset and progressive development, with high disability and mortality rate. At present, there is no effective therapeutic drug. With the acceleration of population aging in China, AD poses a serious threat to public health system and social economy. Recent studies have found that the glycolysis disorder of astrocytes is involved in the progress of AD, which is closely related to the cognitive impairment of AD. The relationship between glycolytic metabolism of astrocytes and cognitive function was reviewed, and the relationship between glycolytic damage of astrocytes and cognitive impairment of AD and its mechanism were elaborated in detail, in order to provide reference for further understanding the new mechanism of cognitive impairment of AD and formulating clinical prevention and treatment strategies for AD.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease. In addition to subjective evaluation, some objective quantifiable indices are needed for the diagnosis and treatment of rosacea. Some skin imaging and noninvasive measurement tools have been applied to clinical practice, and can provide quantitative or semi-quantitative indices to assist the diagnosis and treatment of rosacea. This review summarizes relevant research progress to provide evidence for clinical standardized application.

Rosacea is a chronic recurrent inflammatory skin disease that mainly occurs on the face. A large number of studies have confirmed that rosacea is related to a variety of systemic diseases, including neuropsychiatric diseases such as anxiety, depression, migraine, Alzheimer′s disease and Parkinson′s disease. This review summarizes research progress in the correlation between rosacea and neuropsychiatric diseases, as well as the underlying mechanisms.

Sepsis-induced liver injury (SILI) is an important cause of septicemia deaths. BaWeiBaiDuSan (BWBDS) was extracted from a formula of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer, Lilium brownie F. E. Brown ex Miellez var. viridulum Baker, Polygonatum sibiricum Delar. ex Redoute, Lonicera japonica Thunb., Hippophae rhamnoides Linn., Amygdalus Communis Vas, Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A. DC., and Cortex Phelloderdri. Herein, we investigated whether the BWBDS treatment could reverse SILI by the mechanism of modulating gut microbiota. BWBDS protected mice against SILI, which was associated with promoting macrophage anti-inflammatory activity and enhancing intestinal integrity. BWBDS selectively promoted the growth of Lactobacillus johnsonii (L. johnsonii) in cecal ligation and puncture treated mice. Fecal microbiota transplantation treatment indicated that gut bacteria correlated with sepsis and was required for BWBDS anti-sepsis effects. Notably, L. johnsonii significantly reduced SILI by promoting macrophage anti-inflammatory activity, increasing interleukin-10+ M2 macrophage production and enhancing intestinal integrity. Furthermore, heat inactivation L. johnsonii (HI-L. johnsonii) treatment promoted macrophage anti-inflammatory activity and alleviated SILI. Our findings revealed BWBDS and gut microbiota L. johnsonii as novel prebiotic and probiotic that may be used to treat SILI. The potential underlying mechanism was at least in part, via L. johnsonii-dependent immune regulation and interleukin-10+ M2 macrophage production.

Photobiomodulation, also known as photochemical modulation, refers to the use of low-power light from various sources to induce photophysical and photochemical modulation without thermal injury in the body. Photobiomodulation is related to the wavelength and energy of light. Target chromophores for light of different wavelengths include cytochrome C oxidase, opsin, porphyrin, etc., and the parameters such as power density, spot size, and energy density determine the energy of light. At present, many in vivo and in vitro studies have confirmed the application potential of photobiomodulation in the treatment of various skin diseases.
