1.Therapeutic effect of oregano essential oil on subclinical bovine mastitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is an aromatic herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family. This study evaluated the therapeutic effect of oregano essential oil (OEO) on clinical bovine mastitis caused by Staphylococcus (S.) aureus and/or Escherichia (E.) coli. Thirty-two quarters from 18 lactating cows with subclinical mastitis were selected from a dairy farm and were divided into 4 groups (8 quarters/group): negative control (CON), positive control (GEN) and two OEO-treated groups (OEO-1 and OEO-2). Each group was intramammarily treated with saline, 10 g/tube of gentamicin ointment, and single and double doses of 0.9 mL OEO ointment twice a day for three days, respectively. After the treatments, physical udder conditions were greatly improved in GEN and OEO groups. In CON group, somatic cell counts (SCCs), number of white blood cells (WBC) and bacteria were increased. However, in OEO groups, SCCs and number of WBC were significantly decreased and S. aureus and E. coli were not detected in milk as compared with those before the treatments as well as GEN group. These results suggest that OEO may be a useful alternative to antibiotics for the control of subclinical bovine mastitis caused by S. aureus and/or E. coli.

2.Effect of Helicobacter pylori Eradication on High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol and Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Helicobacter pylori causes extragastric manifestations, including dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome. However the effects of eradication of H. pylori infection on dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome have shown conflicting results. We aimed to investigate the effect of eradication therapy on parameters of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome and prevalence of metabolic syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects who received eradication therapy between August 2004 and June 2010 and who underwent health checkup one year after eradication were enrolled in this study. Parameters of dyslipidemia and metabolic syndrome before and after eradication were collected and tested for significant changes. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome before eradication was also compared with that after treatment. RESULTS: Of the 452 subjects enrolled, 324 subjects were males. In male, HDL cholesterol was significantly elevated after eradication treatment in both young (< or =50) and old (>50) age group. Other metabolic parameters such as waist circumference, body mass index, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, fasting glucose, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and c-reactive protein were not significantly different after eradication in both age group. In female, triglyceride increased significantly and HDL cholesterol decreased after eradication in the old age group. But in the young age female group all the metabolic parameters showed no changes. There were no significant changes in prevalence of metabolic syndrome after eradication treatment in both genders. CONCLUSIONS: Helicobacter eradication caused elevation of HDL cholesterol in males. Eradication therapy showed no effect on prevalence of metabolic syndrome.

3.A Case of Sarcomatoid Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Young Female without Risk Factor.

A previously healthy 22-year-old woman was admitted with a complaint of right upper quadrant abdominal pain for 2 weeks. Her past history was not remarkable. On admission, HBsAg and anti-HCV were negative and alpha-FP was within normal range. Abdominal sonography and CT showed a mass in liver measuring 10 11 cm with features of central necrosis and hemorrhage. On 6th hospital day, hemoperitoneum developed suddenly. She underwent emergency laparotomy and trisegmentectomy. Intraoperative finding revealed a hemoperitoneum with a tumor filled with liquefied necrotic tissues. Microscopically, the tumor was mostly composed of pleomorphic spindle cells with abundant anastomosing vascular channels and partly composed of tumor cells with trabecular arrangement. On immunohistochemical staining, tumor cells reacted with cytokeratin and vimentin, while CD34 and hepatocyte staining revealed negative. She died 2 months after the operation. We report a case of rapidly deteriorated primary sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma in a young female without any risk factor.
