Cuscuta chinensis Lam. and Cuscuta japonica Choisy are parasitic plants. C. chinensis seeds were traditionally used for treatment of kidney and liver deficiencies. C. japonica seeds were used as tonic medicine to improve liver function and strengthen kidneys, treatment of high blood pressure, chronic diarrhea, and sore eyes. Cuscutae Semen are seeds of only C. chinensis in Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia (K.H.P.). The developed HPLC-PDA method easily, accurately, and sensitively quantified using eight marker compounds [hyperoside (1), astragalin, (2), quercetin (3), kaempferol (4), chlorogenic acid (5), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (6), 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (7), and 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (8)]. In addition, the method may be used to distinguish seeds between C. chinensis Lam. and C. japonica Choisy. Furthermore, the result from the current study was applied to clarify samples between steam processed and unprocessed samples of C. chinensis by pattern analysis.

Noonan syndrome is an autosomal dominant, multisystem disorder. Autoimmune thyroiditis with hypothyroidism is an infrequent feature in patients with Noonan syndrome. A 16-year-old boy was admitted because of chest discomfort and dyspnea; an echocardiogram revealed pericardial effusion. Additional investigations led to a diagnosis of severe hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto thyroiditis. The patient was treated with L-thyroxine at 0.15 mg daily. However, during admission, he developed symptoms of cardiac tamponade. Closed pericardiostomy was performed, after which the patient's chest discomfort improved, and his vital signs stabilized. Herein, we report a case of an adolescent with Noonan syndrome, who was diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis with an unusual presentation of cardiac tamponade.

Asian Nursing Research 2014;8(4):261-266
PURPOSE: The present survey was conducted to investigate the perceptions among nurses of neonatal pain and the associated use of pharmacologic measures (PMs) and nonpharmacologic comfort measures (CMs) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Pain perception, the necessity and actual use of PMs and CMs, and their relationships were investigated and compared according to nurses' positions, educational levels, the existence of guidelines, and prior education on neonatal pain management. METHODS: Participants were 141 nurses from five NICUs at university hospitals. A questionnaire was developed by researchers based on previous studies of neonatal pain management and current practices in surveyed NICUs. Five-point Likert scales were used to assess nurses' perceptions of pain, the necessity of PMs and CMs, and their actual use in 29 painful procedures. RESULTS: The mean scores of perceived pain and the necessity of PMs and CMs were 3.68, 2.96, and 3.79 points, respectively. The actual use of PMs and CMs was 1.67 and 2.63 points, respectively. The perceived necessity of PMs correlated with the actual use of PMs (r = .316, p < .001), and CMs were performed (r = .390, p < .001). Keeping or reading guidelines, or receiving education on pain management resulted in a higher perception of the necessity of PMs. CONCLUSION: Korean nurses in NICUs often underestimate the necessity of pain relief measures and use few PMs or CMs. Therefore, systematic approaches to implement guidelines, such as adaptation of guidelines for each NICU, dissemination of guideline content to all NICU staff, and regular measurements of compliance with the guidelines, are recommended.

Journal of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing 2014;25(1):12-23
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate influence of cellular phone videos and games on dry eye syndrome in university students. METHODS: A randomized comparison group pre-post design is used. Sixty university students were randomly assigned to either a video or a game group. Frequencies of blinking, dry eye symptoms scores and amounts of tears were measured. Thirty subjects watched cellular phone video programmes and the other 30 subjects played cellular phone games for 61 minutes. In addition, frequencies of blinking were measured three times during treatment, once immediately after a treatment and twice at an interval of 20 minutes after subsequent treatments. RESULTS: Post-test scores of frequencies of blinking significantly decreased, dry eye symptoms scores including amounts of tears significantly increased greater than pre-test scores in both groups. But there were no significant differences between the groups. Frequencies of blinking were significantly different with respect to the time spent using cellular phone. In both groups, the lowest frequencies of blinking were shown after 40 minutes of cellular phone use. CONCLUSION: This study shows that using cellular phone has negative influence on dry eye syndrome and eyes require a resting period after cellular phone use over 40 minutes.

Hyalinizing trabecular tumor (HTT), a type of thyroid lesion, was first reported by Carney in 1987 and has since been reported continuously. Due to its histological non-specificity, HTT can be misdiagnosed as papillary thyroid cancer or medullary thyroid cancer. For this reason, over treatment might occur; for example, total thyroidectomy and lymphadenectomy. Diagnosis and treatment is a challenge because there is still controversy regarding HTT characters. We report on two cases. One patient was a 48-year-old female and the other was a 46-year-old female. Both patients complained of a thyroid mass and were diagnosed as HTT.

PURPOSE: Thyroid lobectomy is one of the common operative procedures in patients with benign thyroid nodules. The procedure is relatively feasible, but some patients who receive lobectomies have the complications, such as nerve injury, hypocalcemia, and hypothyroidism. We examined the frequency of hypothyroidism and predictable factor following thyroid lobectomy due to benign thyroid nodules. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was carried out on 212 patients who underwent thyroid lobectomy to benign nodules from January 2005 to May 2010. The risk factors, including sex, age at diagnosis, thyroid function test results, existence of thyroiditis, thyroid volume, and results of the preand post-operation thyroid ultrasounds, were analyzed between euthyroidism and hypothyroidism groups. RESULTS: The rate of hypothyroidism was 17%. In the univariate analysis, age, multiplicity of nodules, thyroiditis, preoperative levels of Tg and TSH, and thyroid volume were significantly predictable factors of hypothyroidism. In the multivariate analysis, the significant factors associated with hypothyroidism were being over 40 years old, having a preoperative TSH of more than 2 mlU/L, and having a small thyroid volume. CONCLUSION: Hypothyroidism following lobectomy is not disasterous complication. We should discuss the possibility of postoperative hypothyroidism carefully with patients before operation, especially when we plan to perform lobectomy on the patients who are over 40, have high TSH levels before surgery, or have a small thyroid volume.
