1.Association Between Nurse-Led Multidisciplinary Education and Cardiac Events in Patients With Heart Failure: A Retrospective Chart Review
Asian Nursing Research 2024;18(1):60-67
Purpose:
This study examined the modifiable factors, including nurse-led multidisciplinary education and in/out-of-hospital rehabilitation, to predict cardiac events in patients with heart failure (HF) in South Korea.
Methods:
A retrospective review of the medical records was conducted using data of patients admitted for HF between June 2021 and April 2022. A total of 342 patients were included in this study. Information related to HF education, cardiac rehabilitation, and demographic and clinical characteristics were collected. Cardiac events, including emergency department visits, readmissions, and deaths, were defined as a composite of events. After adjusting for covariates, a multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to explore the association between modifiable factors and cardiac events in patients with HF.
Results:
During the follow-up period (median, 823 days), 123 patients (36.0%) experienced at least one cardiac event. In the Cox regression model, patients who received nurse-led multidisciplinary HF education during hospitalization were less likely to experience cardiac events (hazard ratio: 0.487; 95% confidence interval [CI]:0.239–0.993). Additionally, high NT-pro BNP levels were associated with an increased risk of cardiac events.
Conclusions
The education led by nurses on HF was a factor that reduced adverse prognoses in patients with HF. Our results highlight the importance of a nurse-led multidisciplinary approach during hospitalization.
2.Psychological factors affecting nurses’ perceptions of gaslighting damage
Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education 2024;30(3):242-252
Purpose:
This study aimed to determine the influence of psychological factors such as highly sensitive person, intolerance of uncertainty, depression, and self-esteem on nurses’ perceptions of gaslighting damage.
Methods:
The participants were 178 nurses working in hospitals nationwide. Data were collected through a non-face-to-face approach using an online survey platform (Google Forms) with self-reported questionnaires. Perceptions of gaslighting damage were measured using the victim gaslighting questionnaire (VGQ). The collected data were analyzed with statistical methods such as independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS 25.0.
Results:
Of the participants, 94.4% were female. The participants’ average age was 32.7 years old, 60.2% were unmarried, and 86.0% were staff nurses. The mean score of the VGQ was 40.49. There were statistically significant differences in the VGQ according to marital status, participants’ time in their current department, total clinical career, and type of medical institution. The perception of gaslighting damage was statistically significantly positively correlated with intolerance of uncertainty, highly sensitive person, depression, and self-esteem. The most influential factor on nurses’ perception of gaslighting damage was intolerance of uncertainty (β=.32, p<.001), followed by depression (β=.30, p<.001) and highly sensitive person (β=.23, p=.001). The total explanation of these variables for the perception of gaslighting damage by nurses was about 75.0%.
Conclusion
This study suggests that it is necessary to develop an intervention program to reduce negative psychological factors affecting gaslighting in nurses and to cultivate nurses’ strength to overcome gaslighting damage.

Methods:
Data were collected between February and September 2021 through individual in-depth interviews with 12 kidney transplant recipients with kidney graft failure. Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis was used to analyze the meaning of the participants’ illness experiences.
Results:
5 theme clusters and 15 themes were derived. The five theme clusters are as follows: (1) First transplant giving me a second life; (2) Body and mind becoming sick again; (3) Waiting for a re-transplant with hope and worry; (4) Life supported by gratefulness; (5) Having control over my own life.
Conclusion
This study shows that kidney transplant recipients with kidney graft failure experience physical and psychological difficulties during the long disease period and require help from many people, including family members, friends, colleagues, and health care providers, to overcome their difficulties.
4.Literature Analysis on Reporting Standards for Qualitative Research in Cancer-related Studies
Asian Oncology Nursing 2023;23(4):145-151
Purpose:
This study is a literature analysis conducted to compare the reporting standards for qualitative research (COREQ and SRQR) and analyzed the application reporting standards through an analysis of articles in journals.
Methods:
The study compared the items of COREQ and SRQR, and original texts of 39 qualitative research articles published in Asian Oncology Nursing were analyzed the extent of reporting for COREQ items with frequency and percentages.
Results:
COREQ was found to be deficient of ethical issues, the value of research, and limitations. The extent of reporting for COREQ items in the analyzed articles ranged from 12 items to 24 items, with 92.3% of articles reporting 17~24 items. Most items in study design and analysis and findings were reported. However, there was a lack of reporting on the researchers’ theoretical concepts and reflections.
Conclusion
The results of this study can be shared with peer-reviewers to help establish adequate criteria for qualitative review. COREQ can serve as a guide to enhance the quality of qualitative research, but researchers should distinguished essential elements that must be included in qualitative research reporting standards and exercised flexible thinking that considers the epistemological diversity of qualitative research.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: An association between obesity and erosive esophagitis has been reported, but the effects of sarcopenia and obesity on erosive esophagitis are unknown. This study examined the relationship between obesity, sarcopenia, sarcopenic obesity, and erosive esophagitis in a large population of asymptomatic men and women.METHODS: This study analyzed 32,762 subjects who underwent a comprehensive health check-up, which included upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, from August 2006 to December 2011 by a cross-sectional study. Sarcopenia was defined as a decrease in the appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM)/body weight value of two SD or more below the normal means for a younger reference group.RESULTS: The study was carried out on four groups according to obesity and sarcopenic status: normal, obesity, sarcopenic, and sarcopenic obese group. In a multivariable model, the risk of erosive esophagitis was higher in the obese (adjusted OR [aOR] 1.35, 95% CI 1.22–1.49), sarcopenic (aOR 2.12, 95% CI 1.40–3.19), and sarcopenic obese groups (aOR 1.54, 95% CI 1.27–1.87) than in the normal group. The risk of erosive esophagitis was higher in the sarcopenic and sarcopenic obese groups than the obese group; the ORs were 1.63 (95% CI 1.08–2.47) and 1.22 (95% CI 1.01–1.46), respectively. In dose-response analysis, increasing sarcopenia severity showed a positive and graded relationship with the overall, Los Angeles (LA)-B or higher grade, and LA-C erosive esophagitis.CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that sarcopenia is strongly and progressively associated with erosive esophagitis.

Asian Oncology Nursing 2020;20(4):141-149
Purpose:
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is an important health concern among breast cancer survivors. However, CRF is apt to be dismissed as a minor discomfort by medical professionals. This study aimed to understand the experience of CRF in breast cancer survivors.
Methods:
We conducted a qualitative study using in-depth interviews and thematic analysis. The 14 participants were over the age of 40, complained of fatigue, and had been battling breast cancer for at least eight months to up to 16 years.
Results:
The analysis revealed four themes: traces of fighting cancer, inseparable part of the self, difficulty in daily life, and the body’s signals for care.Chronic fatigue initially disrupted the daily lives of the participants. As time passed, fatigue made it difficult for patients to fulfill their roles within their families, and gradually alienated friends and neighbors. Nevertheless, they tried to overcome the symptoms of fatigue by responding sensitively to the warning signs or changes in their bodies.
Conclusion
Breast cancer survivors often worry about relapse due to persistent fatigue after treatment completion. Therefore, the results of this study may be useful in developing strategies tailored for managing CRF using a multifaceted approach.
9.The Effects of Oral Cryotherapy on Nausea, Vomiting, Oral Mucositis, and Oral Pain in Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy
Asian Oncology Nursing 2020;20(3):132-140
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether repeated oral cryotherapy was effective in reducing nausea, vomiting, oral mucositis, and oral pain in patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy during the 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd rounds of chemotherapy for the first time.
Methods:
A nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. The experimental group (n=21) received oral cryotherapy that applied a 2×2×2 cm ice cube in the mouth for 30 minutes at each chemotherapy. Both experimental group and control group (n=20) received oral care educations. Nausea, vomiting, oral mucositis and oral pain were measured on 5 days, 14 days, and 21 days after each chemotherapy. Data were collected from July 2019 to April 2020 at a university hospital in Korea, and analyzed using the SPSS WIN 25.0 software package.
Results:
There was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the nausea·vomiting score, oral mucositis grade, and oral pain score. Oral cryotherapy was confirmed to be effective in delaying nausea and vomiting. It has been shown that stomatitis and oral pain are related.
Conclusion
For breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, it is recommended to apply oral cryotherapy as a nursing intervention to reduce nausea, vomiting, oral mucositis, and oral pain.

Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education 2018;24(4):391-405
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to integrate and synthesize findings from qualitative studies exploring male students' experiences of adapting to nursing education programs so as to obtain further understanding of the phenomenon. METHODS: The meta-synthesis process was primarily guided by Noblit and Hare's approach, which consists of four stages including searching, appraisal of an individual study's quality, data extraction for analysis, and meta-synthesizing the results. RESULTS: Findings from the literature reviewed were synthesized into six themes: 1) extraordinary choice based on job stability and gender scarcity; 2) unexpected feeling of marginalization as minority far apart from the mainstream; 3) assimilation and negotiation for relational adaptation through perspective shift; 4) fortifying the vision and identity as nursing students by meaning making for adapting to the nursing major; 5) mutual support among colleague male students; and 6) serving in the military as way of hiding out and achieving maturation. CONCLUSION: The findings illustrate that nursing education programs need practical changes promoting male students' adaptation to the program itself as well as preparation to be a professional nurse in the future.
