Inflammation is involved in the development of various acute and chronic diseases in the body. Sustained inflammatory responses are key driving factors for diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and arthritis. Therefore, finding anti-inflammatory drugs is crucial for the prevention and treatment of various diseases. In recent years, there has been increasing attention to finding natural drugs with minimal toxic side effects. Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Lonicerae Flos, as traditional Chinese medicines potent in clearing heat and removing toxins, have strong biological activity and multiple pharmacological effects. They are widely distributed in the plant world and have significant medicinal value. With the continuous advancement of the research on Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Lonicerae Flos, they have been widely used in the medical field and possess great development potential. Currently, research mainly focuses on the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Lonicerae Flos, while systematic summaries of their anti-inflammatory active ingredients are rare. Therefore, this paper focuses on the differential analysis of the anti-inflammatory active components of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Lonicerae Flos. In addition, it reviewed the possible mechanisms by which extracts and active ingredients of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Lonicerae Flos may exert anti-inflammatory effects through various pathways, such as influencing the release of cellular inflammatory factors, regulating inflammatory signaling pathways such as nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), MAPK/extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/NF-κB, and Janus kinase (JAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) signaling pathways, increasing antioxidant stress capacity, enhancing immune defense capabilities, and improving intestinal microbiota, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for the rational clinical application of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Lonicerae Flos.

BACKGROUND:Acellular vascular scaffolds can mimic the microstructure and function of native blood vessels, but some extracellular matrix loss occurs during their preparation, which affects their hemocompatibility. Therefore,it is necessary to modify them to improve their hemocompatibility. OBJECTIVE:To assess the hemocompatibility of acellular vascular scaffold prepared by Triton-x100/heparin sodium treatment. METHODS:The abdominal aorta was taken from SD rats and randomly divided into control and experimental groups. The control group was treated with Triton-x100 for 48 hours. The experimental group was treated with Triton-x100 for 48 hours and then treated with heparin sodium. The morphology and hydrophilicity of the two groups of acellular vascular scaffolds were detected. The hemocompatibility of the two groups of acellular vascular scaffold was evaluated by recalcification coagulation time test, platelet adhesion test, dynamic coagulation time test, hemolysis test, and complement activation test. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)Scanning electron microscopy showed that the surface of the two groups of vascular scaffolds was relatively intact, and a large number of fiber filaments appeared on the surface of the scaffolds after decellularity treatment, and the surface microstructure changed significantly. The water contact angle of the two groups of vascular scaffolds was smaller than that of natural vessels(P<0.000 1).There was no significant difference in water contact angle between the two groups(P>0.05).(2)The coagulation time of vascular scaffold was longer in the experimental group than in the control group(P<0.05).The number of platelets attached to the scaffold membrane was less in the experimental group than that in the control group(P<0.000 1).The coagulation index was greater in the experimental group than that in the control group(P<0.01),and the complement level was lower in the experimental group than that in the control group(P<0.001).The hemolysis rate of the two groups was lower than 5%of the national standard.(3)To conclude, acellular scaffold treated with Triton-x100/heparin sodium has excellent hemocompatibility.

ObjectiveExisting artificial vision devices can be divided into two types: implanted devices and extracorporeal devices, both of which have some disadvantages. The former requires surgical implantation, which may lead to irreversible trauma, while the latter has some defects such as relatively simple instructions, limited application scenarios and relying too much on the judgment of artificial intelligence (AI) to provide enough security. Here we propose a system that has voice interaction and can convert surrounding environment information into tactile commands on head and neck. Compared with existing extracorporeal devices, our device can provide a larger capacity of information and has advantages such as lower cost, lower risk, suitable for a variety of life and work scenarios. MethodsWith the latest remote wireless communication and chip technologies, microelectronic devices, cameras and sensors worn by the user, as well as the huge database and computing power in the cloud, the backend staff can get a full insight into the scenario, environmental parameters and status of the user remotely (for example, across the city) in real time. In the meanwhile, by comparing the cloud database and in-memory database and with the help of AI-assisted recognition and manual analysis, they can quickly develop the most reasonable action plan and send instructions to the user. In addition, the backend staff can provide humanistic care and emotional sustenance through voice dialogs. ResultsThis study originally proposes the concept of “remote virtual companion” and demonstrates the related hardware and software as well as test results. The system can not only achieve basic guide functions, for example, helping a person with visual impairment to shop in supermarkets, find seats at cafes, walk on the streets, construct complex puzzles, and play cards, but also can meet the demand for fast-paced daily tasks such as cycling. ConclusionExperimental results show that this “remote virtual companion” is applicable for various scenarios and demands. It can help blind people with their travels, shopping and entertainment, or accompany the elderlies with their trips, wilderness explorations, and travels.

Objective: To investigate the clinical value of observing perioperative changes of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and neutrophil elastase (NE) in coronary artery circulation in patients underwent valve replacement surgery. Methods: This perspective cohort study was performed in patients who underwent valvular surgery in Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital and Fuwai Hospital from June 2021 to June 2022. Patients were divided into perioperative myocardial injury group and age-, sex- and type of cardiac procedure-matched non-perioperative myocardial injury control group in the ratio of 1∶1. Perioperative myocardial injury was defined as cardiac troponin T (cTnT)>0.8 μg/L on the first postoperative day (POD), and the cTnT level on the second POD increased by more than 10% compared with the cTnT level on the first POD. During the operation, blood samples were collected from the coronary sinus before clamping ascending aorta, and within 5 minutes after de-clamping ascending aorta. Then, the levels of MPO and NE on coronary sinus were continuously measured. The death, severe ventricular arrhythmia, pneumonia, re-intubation, repeat cardiac surgery, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), mechanical ventilation time and the duration of intensive care unit (ICU) were recorded. The levels of MPO and NE and the incidence of clinical outcomes were compared between the myocardial injury group and the control group. The independent risk factors of myocardial injury were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Results: A total of 130 patients were enrolled, aged (60.6±7.6) years old, with 59 males (45.4%). There were 65 patients in the myocardial injury group and 65 patients in the control group. During hospitalization, there was no death, ECMO, IABP and CRRT cases in both groups. Compared with the control group, the incidence of severe ventricular arrhythmia (13.8%(9/65) vs. 3.1%(2/65), P=0.03), pneumonia (20.0%(13/65) vs. 3.1%(2/65), P=0.03), re-intubation (6.2%(4/65) vs. 0, P=0.04) was significantly higher in myocardial injury group. The mechanical ventilation time (16.8(10.7, 101.7) h vs. 7.5(4.7, 15.1) h, P<0.01), and the duration of ICU (3.7(2.7, 18.9) vs. 2.7(1.8, 6.9)d, P<0.01) were significantly longer in myocardial injury group compared with the control group. There was no significant difference in the levels of MPO and NE in coronary sinus blood between the two groups before aortic clamping (all P>0.05). However, MPO ((551.3±124.2) μg/L vs. (447.2±135.9) μg/L, P<0.01) and NE ((417.0±83.1)μg/L vs. (341.0±68.3)μg/L, P<0.01) after 5 min aortic de-clamping were significantly higher in myocardial injury group than in the control group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the levels of NE (OR=1.02, 95%CI: 1.01-1.02, P<0.01), MPO (OR=1.00, 95%CI: 1.00-1.01, P=0.02) and mechanical ventilation time (OR=1.03, 95%CI: 1.01-1.06, P=0.02) were independent risk factors of myocardial injury in patients after surgical valvular replacement. Conclusion: Perioperative myocardial injury is related poor clinical outcomes, perioperative NE and MPO in coronary artery circulation are independent risk factors of perioperative myocardial injury in patients undergoing valve replacement surgery.

The theory of "liver opens at the eyes" was first seen in Yellow Emperor's Internal Canon of Medicine, which is the ancient people's summary of the connection between the liver and the eyes. The theory of "liver opens at the eyes" suggests the characteristic of "co-damage and co-recover of liver and eyes". It has been found in clinical practice that liver diseases and eye diseases often occur together, and "liver and eyes co-recover" is an ideal choice. The key to achieving "liver and eyes co-recover" is to analyze its pharmacological material basis and mechanism. With the development of modern medicine, more and more evidence indicates that the liver and eyes have complex and close relationships in physiological and pathological aspects. In a pathological state, there is a phenomenon of "liver and eyes co-damage", and after the intervention of traditional Chinese medicine, "liver and eyes co-recover" occurs. "Liver and eyes co-damage and co-recover" can be explained through the "co-material basis and co-action mechanism". On this basis, the research group tentatively proposed that the liver and eyes had "four common characteristics" (4CCs), namely "co-damage, co-recover, co-material basis, and co-action mechanism" from the theoretical connotation of traditional Chinese medicine, clinical practice, and molecular biology. Additionally, the group also took the intervention of Prunella vulgaris, traditional Chinese medicine, for removing liver fire and improving eyesight on immune liver injury (ILI) and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) as examples to analyze 4CCs. This project aims to deeply analyze the scientific connotation of the theory of "liver opens at the eyes", reveal the common characteristics and biological essence of liver and eyes, explore a new research paradigm of "liver and eyes co-recover", and provide a reference for the study of common problems of multi-organ associated diseases.

Acta Physiologica Sinica 2023;75(3):339-350
This paper aimed to investigate the role and potential mechanism of p53 on primordial follicle activation. Firstly, the p53 mRNA expression in the ovary of neonatal mice at 3, 5, 7 and 9 days post-partum (dpp) and the subcellular localization of p53 were detected to confirm the expression pattern of p53. Secondly, 2 dpp and 3 dpp ovaries were cultured with p53 inhibitor Pifithrin-μ (PFT-μ, 5 μmol/L) or equal volume of dimethyl sulfoxide for 3 days. The function of p53 in primordial follicle activation was determined by hematoxylin staining and whole ovary follicle counting. The proliferation of cell was detected by immunohistochemistry. The relative mRNA levels and protein levels of the key molecules involved in the classical pathways associated with the growing follicles were examined by immunofluorescence staining, Western blot and real-time PCR, respectively. Finally, rapamycin (RAP) was used to intervene the mTOR signaling pathway, and ovaries were divided into four groups: Control, RAP (1 μmol/L), PFT-μ (5 μmol/L), PFT-μ (5 μmol/L) + RAP (1 μmol/L) groups. The number of follicles in each group was determined by hematoxylin staining and whole ovary follicle counting. The results showed that the expression of p53 mRNA was decreased with the activation of primordial follicles in physiological condition. p53 was expressed in granulosa cells and oocyte cytoplasm of the primordial follicles and growing follicles, and the expression of p53 in the primordial follicles was higher than that in the growing follicles. Inhibition of p53 promoted follicle activation and reduced the primordial follicle reserve. Inhibition of p53 promoted the proliferation of the granulosa cells and oocytes. The mRNA and protein expression levels of key molecules in the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway including AKT, PTEN, and FOXO3a were not significantly changed after PFT-μ treatment, while the expression of RPS6/p-RPS6, the downstream effectors of the mTOR signaling pathway, was upregulated. Inhibition of both p53 and mTOR blocked p53 inhibition-induced primordial follicle activation. Collectively, these findings suggest that p53 may inhibit primordial follicle activation through the mTOR signaling pathway to maintain the primordial follicle reserve.

Chinese Journal of Internal Medicine 2022;61(3):310-316
Objective:To evaluate the clinical application of LASEREO endoscopic system in early gastric cancer (EGC).Methods:A total of 68 patients diagnosed with EGC were retrospectively analyzed between August 2017 to December 2020 in Fuding Hospital Affiliated to Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. There were 50 males and 18 females finally enrolled with a median age of 64 years. EGCs were analyzed from subjective and objective aspect, as well as from magnification and non-magnification status. Six endoscopists evaluated the visibility of the EGC (RSC) and calculated the color difference (ΔEC) between EGC and the surrounding mucosa in white light imaging (WLI), blue light imaging-bright (BLI-Bri) and linked color imaging (LCI) modes. In the case of magnification (×80), the visibility of the microstructures and microvessels (RSV) was analyzed and the color difference (ΔEV) between microvessels and non-vessels areas were calculated in WLI, BLI and LCI modes. The visibility was evaluated using visibility ranking scale(RS) and the color difference (ΔE) was calculated using L*a*b* color space. Results:In WLI, BLI-Bri, and LCI modes, the mean (±SD) RSC were 2.56±0.68, 2.63±0.59 and 3.17±0.50, and the mean(±SD) ΔEC were 15.71±5.58, 12.04±3.73, and 22.84±8.46, respectively, which in LCI were higher than those in WLI and BLI-Bri modes ( P<0.001).Regarding the data evaluated by senior endoscopists, the RSC was higher in BLI-Bri than that in WLI mode (2.98±0.58 vs. 2.79±0.73, P<0.001), but as to those evaluated by junior endoscopists, there were no significant differences between the WLI and BLI-Bri modes(2.29±0.72 vs. 2.23±0.72,P =0.218).In magnifying endoscopy with WLI, BLI, and LCI modes, the mean(±SD) RSV were 2.95±0.28, 3.46±0.40, and 3.38±0.33, and the mean (±SD) ΔEV were 21.68±7.52, 44.29±10.94, and 45.38±14.29, respectively. The RSV and ΔEV in LCI and BLI were higher than that in WLI mode ( P<0.001). Conclusions:LCI improves the visibility of EGC by increasing ΔEC, especially in junior endoscopists. Both BLI and LCI improve the visibility of microstructures and microvessels under magnification.
