1.Radiologic evolution of biopsy-proven acute interstitial nephritis: a multimodal imaging case report

		                        			 This report presents radiologic changes after clinical improvement in a patient with acute interstitial nephritis (AIN). A 45-year-old female patient was referred for decreased renal function. Eight months prior, she had undergone hysterectomy and received chemotherapy. At the start of chemotherapy, her baseline creatinine level was 0.55 mg/dL, which rose to 1.46 mg/dL. Multiple imaging modalities performed when decreased renal function was observed revealed bilateral renal enlargement with increased cortical attenuation on computed tomography (CT), cortical hyperechogenicity on ultrasonography, and diffusion restriction in the renal cortices on magnetic resonance imaging. A renal biopsy was performed, and AIN was diagnosed. Follow-up laboratory tests showed that kidney function had improved to normal levels, and CT at that time showed a reduction in the size of both kidneys. Radiologic changes can serve as clues for the diagnosis of AIN. This is the first report to confirm radiological changes after the clinical improvement of AIN, thereby providing novel information about the course of AIN. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
2.Sex-Specific Reference Intervals and AgeRelated Variations in Hematologic Parameters in Korean Adults Measured Using the Beckman Coulter DxH 900 Analyzer

		                        			 Background:
		                        			This study established sex-specific reference intervals (RIs) for hematological parameters, including the monocyte distribution width (MDW), in Korean adults and assessed the need for separate RIs according to sex in older adults. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			Hematological parameters were measured using a DxH 900 hematology analyzer (Beckman Coulter, USA) on 328 peripheral blood samples from 124 men and 204 women aged 19–93 years. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			The RIs for white blood cells, red blood cells (RBCs), Hb, Hct, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, monocyte percentage, and neutrophil, eosinophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts differed significantly by sex (P<0.05). Mean corpuscular volume was significantly positively associated with age, whereas RBC and platelet counts were significantly negatively correlated with age in both men and women. Age-based analysis revealed significant shifts in the RBC parameters beginning at 60 years of age in men and 70 years of age in women. The MDW did not show significant differences according to sex or age. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusions
		                        			This study supports the use of sex-specific RIs and highlights the importance of considering age when interpreting results regarding hematological parameters in clinical practice. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
3.The Effect of Postnatal Systemic Corticosteroid on Neurodevelopmental Outcome in Very Low Birth Weight Preterm Infants

		                        			 Purpose:
		                        			This study aimed to investigate the effects of postnatal systemic corticosteroids on neurodevelopment in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			This was a population-based study of the Korean Neonatal Network of VLBW infant born at 23+0 and 31+6 weeks of gestation between 2013 and 2020. VLBW preterm infants assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, third edition (BSID-III) at 18–24 months of corrected age and 3 years of age were enrolled. The primary outcomes were BSID-III scores and neurodevelopmental delays, with scores of <85. Socioeconomic status and clinical variables were adjusted for using multivariate regression analyses. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			In total, 517 infants were enrolled in this study. Among the 216 (41.8%) infants who received postnatal systemic corticosteroids, the rate of cognitive delay was significantly higher at 18–24 months of corrected age than at 3 years of age. The rates of language and motor delays were significantly higher both at 18–24 months of corrected age and at 3 years of age. When multivariate logistic regression was performed, postnatal systemic corticosteroid use was significantly associated with cognitive delay at 18–24 months of corrected age, but not at 3 years of age. There was no significant association between postnatal systemic corticosteroid use and language or motor delay at 18-24 months of corrected age or at 3 years of age after multivariate logistic regression. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion

4.Dietary isoflavone intake among breast cancer survivors and cancer-free women

		                        			 BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
		                        			Isoflavones are estrogen-like compounds found in plants and their health effects remain equivocal. We investigated dietary isoflavone intake and its associated factors in Korean breast cancer survivors, with a comparison to cancer-free women. 
		                        		
		                        			SUBJECTS/METHODS:
		                        			The usual dietary intake of breast cancer survivors (n = 981, mean age 52 yrs) in 9 hospitals between 2012 and 2019 was assessed using 3-day food records or food frequency questionnaires (FFQs). They were age-matched to 2,943 cancer-free women who completed FFQs as part of a nationwide study conducted between 2012 and 2016. We used the flavonoid database of common Korean foods and the Phenol-Explorer database to estimate isoflavone intake. The contribution of each food or food group to the total isoflavone intake was calculated. The adjusted least-squares means of dietary isoflavone intake according to lifestyle and clinical factors were calculated using generalized linear models. 
		                        		
		                        			RESULTS:
		                        			Breast cancer survivors had a higher mean dietary isoflavone intake (23.59 mg/day) than cancer-free women (17.81 mg/day). Major food sources, including tofu, soybeans, and doenjang, contributed to over 70% of the isoflavone intake in both groups. When we estimated dietary isoflavone intake according to lifestyle characteristics, isoflavone intake increased with higher scores of adherence to the American Cancer Society dietary guidelines but decreased with increasing body mass index in both groups. Among cancer-free women, dietary isoflavone intake was higher among those who had never smoked and among dietary supplement users. Among breast cancer survivors, dietary isoflavone intakes did not vary with clinical characteristics, including time since surgery and estrogen receptor status. 
		                        		
		                        			CONCLUSION
		                        			Breast cancer survivors were more likely to consume isoflavones than agematched cancer-free women. Dietary isoflavone intake was associated with healthy lifestyle characteristics in women both with and without breast cancer. 5.Anti-obesity effects of ethanol extract of green Citrus junos peel enriched in naringin and hesperidin in vitro andin vivo

		                        			Green Citrus junos (yuja) peel extract has higher naringin and hesperidin contents and antioxidant activity than yellow yuja peel extract, but its anti-obesity effects are unclear. This study examined the anti-obesity properties of green yuja peel ethanol extract (GYE) in 3T3-L1 cells and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice.MATERIALS/METHODS: The effects of GYE on adipocyte differentiation were assessed by measuring Oil red O staining, mRNA and protein expression. The beneficial effects of GYE on HFD-induced obese mice were evaluated using the body weight, body composition, visceral fat size, and biochemical analysis. 
		                        		
		                        			RESULTS:
		                        			GYE inhibited adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation compared to the control cells, as evidenced by Oil red O staining and the triglyceride level, respectively.GYE down-regulated the adipogenic genes CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α (C/EBPα) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), and lipogenic gene diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 2 (DGAT2). GYE at 100 μg/mL downregulated the phosphorylation levels of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase B (Akt), and their downstream targets PPARγ and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1 (SREBP-1c) compared to the control group. In obese mice, GYE (100 mg/kg/day) reduced the body weight, body weight gain, and serum lipid level compared to the control group. Analysis using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry showed that GYE decreased the fat percentage, fat in tissue, and abdominal circumference, while it increased the lean percentage compared to control group.Furthermore, GYE significantly reduced the visceral fat weight and size compared to the control group. 
		                        		
		                        			CONCLUSION
		                        			GYE suppressed adipocyte differentiation by inhibiting the PI3K-Akt pathway in vitro and reduced the body fat mass and visceral adiposity in HFD-induced obese mice.These findings suggest that GYE is a viable natural option for combating obesity. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
6.Trends, statistics, and policy recommendations on maternal, fetal, and infant mortality before and after COVID-19: a review of the past decade (2012-2022) based on national health information data

		                        			 Objective:
		                        			To examine the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on maternal, fetal, and infant mortality in South Korea using national statistics, in order to inform policy development and enhance maternal and child health outcomes with the provided data. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			Pregnancy-related mortality in women, as well as deaths of infants, in South Korea was identified using cause-of-death statistics from Statistics Korea. Records from death certificates, cremation reports on infant and fetal deaths, and the complementary cause-of-death investigation system were reviewed for the 2012-2022 period. The classification criteria for cause of death followed the recommendations of World Health Organization and the Korean standard classification of diseases and causes of death. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			The maternal mortality rate decreased from 11.3 per 100,000 live births in 2018 to 9.9 in 2019, rose to 11.8 in 2020, and fell to 8.8 in 2021. The actual number of maternal deaths declined from 37 in 2018 to 23 in 2021 due to fewer births. The fetal death rate increased from 11.3 per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 11.6 in 2019, continuing to rise to 12.0 in 2021. The number of fetal deaths dropped from 3,743 in 2018 to 3,152 in 2021. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Korea experienced a sharp decline in births as well as in maternal, infant, and fetal deaths.
