BACKGROUND: Skin laser treatment has improved significantly and has become an effective treatment approach for many skin diseases while also having applications for beauty treatments. However, since skin laser transfers energy directly to the skin, the misuse of such treatment may result in permanent damage to skin tissues. OBJECTIVE: This survey of Korean adults, conducted to obtain their perspectives on and their treatment experience with skin laser treatment, will be used to determine the current status of skin laser treatment and to identify necessary changes to ensure proper and safe conduct of skin laser treatment. METHODS: From April 5th to April 12th, 2016, a survey was conducted to obtain information regarding the perspectives and the treatment experience of adults aged 20~59 years. RESULTS: Approximately 50% of the participants had experience with skin laser treatment, and among these, 24.7% had not received treatment at a dermatology clinic. Compared to treatment at a dermatology clinic, the danger of side effects was 1.7 times higher at a non-dermatology clinic, 2 times higher at a skin care shop, and 5.3 times higher at an Oriental medical clinic. Among patients who received skin laser treatment, 16.1% experienced side effects, and among these, 1 out of 4 patients visited a non-dermatologist for treatment of these side effects. CONCLUSION: The results of the survey showed that in order for the public to receive safe and effective skin laser treatment based on professional diagnosis, there is a definitive need to provide correct information to the public and to implement changes to ensure proper understanding of skin laser treatment among this population.

We report here the results of the external quality assessment scheme (EQA) of blood bank tests in Korea carried out in 2015. The proficiency testing specimens used in the survey were prepared at Ajou University Hospital. The response rates from participating laboratories for the first and second trials were 98.7% (542/549) and 98.2% (544/554), respectively. No answers to tests were considered incorrect, and the average accuracy rates for six different test items on the standard survey were as follows: ABO grouping, 99.4% to 100.0%; RhD typing, 99.4% to 100.0%; crossmatching, 93.6% to 99.0%; direct antiglobulin test (DAT) using a polyspecific reagent, 92.9% to 98.3%; DAT using an IgG monospecific reagent, 94.6% to 100.0%; DAT using a C3d monospecific reagent, 84.2% to 98.6%; unexpected antibody screening test, 94.5% to 100.0%; and antibody identification test, 93.8% to 100.0%. We performed a pilot survey on reactivities to A1 (54 responses) and H (50 responses); Rh C, c, E, and e antigen testing (47 responses); and ABO antibody titration (10-34 responses). We obtained excellent results for this EQA, and these results will be helpful for improving or maintaining the quality of the participating laboratories.

We report here the results of surveys on external quality assessment (EQA) of blood bank tests in Korea carried out in 2014. The proficiency testing specimens were prepared at Ajou University Hospital and the response rates for the 1st and 2nd trials were 94.3% (537/549) and 96.0% (545/554), respectively. No answers were considered incorrect, and the average accuracy rates of six different test items on the regular survey were as follows: ABO grouping, 98.5% to 100.0%; RhD typing, 98.1% to 99.4%; crossmatching, 91.2% to 99.6%; direct antiglobulin test (DAT) using a polyspecific reagent, 96.7% to 98.4%; DAT using an immunoglobulin-G monospecific reagent, 93.8% to 98.7%; DAT using a C3d monospecific reagent, 89.5% to 98.7%; unexpected antibody screening test, 96.2% to 100.0%; and antibody identification test, 69.8% to 100.0%. Test items for the pilot survey were reactivities to anti-A1 and anti-H, Rh subgrouping, and ABO antibody titration. Except for the result of the antibody identification test for specimens with multiple antibodies, we obtained excellent survey results for the EQA of blood bank tests carried out in 2014. In addition, the number of participating institutes was higher in 2014 than in 2013. The EQA of blood bank tests in 2014 should be helpful for improving the quality of the participating laboratories.

4.Results of an Inpatient Smoking Cessation Program: 3-Month Cessation Rate and Predictors of Success.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalization presents smokers with an opportunity to initiate smoking cessation. We studied the effect of inpatient counseling and follow-up after discharge on smoking cessation and assessed predictors of successful cessation. METHODS: This study included a total of 125 patients (118 male and 7 female) who were admitted to departments of neurology, cardiology, and pulmonology. They were referred to the smoking cessation clinic, and participated between September 2011 and February 2013. A counseling service lasting about thirty minutes was provided by the third-year family medicine residents during hospitalization. The follow-up counseling services, which were either by telephone or in-person physician counseling were provided at 1 week, 4 weeks, and 3 months. Smoking habits and nicotine dependency data were gathered using questionnaires, and patient information was collected from electronic medical records. RESULTS: The average age in the study was 57.9 +/- 10.2 years and duration of smoking was 35.9 +/- 11.7 years. Daily tobacco consumption was 23.5 +/- 13.2 cigarettes. The smoking cessation rate after 3 months was 42.4%. The only differences between patients in the successful cessation and failed groups were cause of admission (P = 0.039) and total number of counseling sessions after discharge (P < 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, smoking cessation was more likely when patients experienced more instances of follow-up after discharge (1-2 visits: odds ratio [OR], 8.186; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.060 to 63.239; > or =3 visits: OR, 121.873; 95% CI, 14.462 to 1,027.055). CONCLUSION: Smoking cessation counseling during hospitalization and further follow-up by telephone or outpatient counseling after discharge contributed to an increased smoking cessation rate. The smoking cessation rate also tended to increase with total counseling numbers.

No answers were considered incorrect answers, and the average accuracy rates of different test items of the survey were as follows: ABO grouping, 98.9% to 100%; RhD typing, 98.4% to 99.2%; crossmatching, 94.4% to 100.0%; DAT using polyspecific reagent, 94.5% to 99.7%; DAT using IgG monospecific reagent, 94.7% to 98.8%; DAT using C3d monospecific reagent, 91.3% to 98.6%; unexpected antibody screening test, 90.9% to 100%; and antibody identification test, 87.3% to 100.0%. Overall, we obtained excellent survey results for the EQA of blood bank tests carried out in 2013, and the number of participating institutes was higher in 2013 than in 2012.

Diabetic foot infection is one of the important complications in patients with advanced diabetes mellitus. Limb threatening infections such as osteomyelitis, abscess, and necrotizing fasciitis are frequently accompanied by the disease. Non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) is a rare causative organism of diabetic foot infection. Thus, if one is not suspicious or meticulous, infection due to NTM will be easily overlooked and this will result in delayed diagnose and treat. Therefore, it is necessary to consider NTM as the causative organism if the wound does not respond to the conventional antibiotic treatment and the culture from the adequately obtained specimen reveals atypical acid-fast bacilli. We present a case of diabetic foot infection with osteomyelitis and abscess due to Mycobacterium mageritense, one of the rapid growing mycobacteria, that was successfully treated with surgical debridement and appropriate antibiotic treatment.

8.High Frequency of Genetic Alterations in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Detected by Multi-target Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization.

Detection of genetic alterations could provide a tool as an adjuvant for the diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and to define patients at risk for early relapse. In this study, a multi-target fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay was conducted to investigate the correlation between the alterations of chromosomes, including 5p15.2, 6p11.1-q11, 7p12, and 8q24.12-q24.13 (LaVysion Test), and clinicopathological variables, and to clarify the potential of the multi-target FISH assay in 37 NSCLC. The most notable finding was the higher frequency of a gain in chromosome 5p15.2 in early-stage (I+IIa) lung cancers. The frequency of the gain was 81.3% (16/22) in stage I tumors. The frequencies of gains in 6p11.1-q11 and 8q24.12-q24.13 were 61.5% (8/13) and 84.6% (11/13) in stage IIIa cancers, as compared with lower frequencies in stage I tumors at 25.0% and 31.3%, respectively. There was also a significant difference in the histological type. Our results suggest that a gain in 6p11.1-q11 and 8q24.12-q24.13 plays an important role in tumor progression and is associated with histological differentiation. On the other hand, gene amplification in the 5p region was one of the most consistent alterations in early-stage lung cancer, and thus a series of genes in the critical 5p15.2 region might potentially associated with the development of lung cancer.

Good's syndrome is the association of thymoma with immunodeficiency, characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia, B-cell lymphopenia and variably defects in cellular immunity with CD4+ T-cell lymphopenia and an inverted CD4+:CD8+ T-cell ratio. We report a 43-year-old male patient who presented with a 18-month history of productive cough and postnasal drip. One year ago, he underwent the operation for resection of a thymoma. Despite of appropriate management, sinusitis relapsed multiple times. He was found to have hypogammaglobulinemia with nearly absent B cells(4/microliter). The CD4+ T-cell count was 554/microliter with an inverted CD4+:CD8+ T-cell ratio of 0.6. His symptoms and signs improved with antibiotic treatment and monthly administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG, 400 mg/kg).
