BACKGROUND:Knee osteoarthritis is a common disease in middle-aged and elderly people. It is a kind of disease that seriously affects the quality of life of patients and even has the risk of disability. Therefore, the pathogenesis and treatment of knee osteoarthritis have become the focus of research. In Chinese medicine, knee osteoarthritis is often treated as"biness,"which is closely related to"biness"caused by blood stasis and blood vessels blocking collaterals in the theory of"blood stasis"in traditional Chinese medicine.Iron overload is a kind of pathological state caused by iron metabolism disorder, which highly coincides with the pathogenic characteristics and clinical manifestations of the"blood stasis"theory of traditional Chinese medicine, and is a risk factor that promotes the development of knee osteoarthritis. OBJECTIVE:Based on the"blood stasis"theory,to summarize the effects of iron overload on cartilage metabolism and subchondral bone reconstruction,to lay a new theoretical foundation for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis with traditional Chinese medicine, and to explore the therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine for promoting blood circulation after interfering with bone tissue. METHODS:CNKI,WanFang database,PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched for relevant literature. The Chinese search terms were"ferroptosis, iron, iron overload, osteoarthritis, blood stasis"and the English search terms were"ferroptosis, iron, iron overload, osteoarthritis,TCM."In the end,76 articles were included for further review. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:First of all,we explored the potential of the"blood stasis"theory in treating knee osteoarthritis, and found that"blood stasis"is a crucial part in the progress of knee osteoarthritis, indicating that the"blood stasis"theory is the key to the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in traditional Chinese medicine.Secondly,"blood stasis"and iron overload have a high degree of similarity in pathogenic factors, clinical manifestations, and pathogenic characteristics, suggesting the possibility of"blood stasis"theory in treating iron overload. This finding reminds us that iron overload may be an important mechanistic basis for the"blood stasis"theory in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The extracts of blood-activating drugs can relieve iron overload and treat knee osteoarthritis, but the specific mechanism is still unclear. Therefore,we believe that the relationship between"blood stasis"theory and iron overload and related mechanisms are important research directions for knee osteoarthritis in the future. The related mechanism of"blood stasis"theory to alleviate iron overload and then treat knee osteoarthritis also provides a theoretical basis for the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine, such as the development of new drugs and innovative usage, and has certain guiding significance for clinical practice.

Objective:To evaluate whether individualized dialectical treatment decoction taken for≥6 months after radical surgery for stageⅡ-Ⅲ colorectal cancer(CRC)is superior to surgery alone at preventing early(within 2 years)recurrence and metastasis. Methods:Patients with CRC who underwent radical surgery were enrolled consecutively in The First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University of CM and The First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University. The primary outcome was defined as early recurrence and metastasis for patients who underwent≥6 months of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)treatment versus those who did not after surgery(Non-TCM).Multivariable modified Pois-son regression was used to model the primary outcome, and propensity score matching(PSM)was included in the regression-based sensit-ivity analysis. Results:A total of 103 patients received TCM treatment and 384 did not.In the entire cohort, the multivariable modified Pois-son regression model showed that the adjusted risk for early recurrence and metastasis was lower in the TCM group10.7%(12/103)vs.21.4%(82/384),relative risk(RR):0.448,95%confidence interval[CI]:0.261-0.769).PSM analysis was used at a 1:2 ratio, resulting in 99 pa-tients in the TCM group and 198 patients in the Non-TCM group. The TCM group still showed a lower risk for early recurrence and metastas-is 11.1%(11/99)vs.21.2%(42/198),RR:0.464,95%CI:0.227-0.948.The results of sensitivity analysis were consistent with multivariable ana-lysis.In this prespecified subgroup analysis, the difference in the rate of the primary outcome between the TCM and the Non-TCM groups was greater among males and those with N2 and moderately-highly differentiated tumors.Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the incidence of early-recurrence-and metastasis-free survival was significantly higher in the TCM group than the Non-TCM groups. Conclusions:For patients with stage Ⅱ-Ⅲ colorectal cancer after radical surgery, individualized dialectical treatment with TCM was associated with a lower risk of early recurrence and metastasis.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2013;33(8):1173-1176
OBJECTIVETo screen tumor biomarkers in the plasma close related with hypopharyngeal carcinoma.
METHODSPooled plasma from 6 patients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma and 6 healthy individuals were collected. After removal of high-abundance plasma proteins, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) was performed to isolate the total proteins, and the protein spots with more than 2-fold differential expressions were detected by 2D analysis software followed by identification by MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometer. Western blotting was performed to validate the expression level of α2-HS-glycoprotein.
RESULTSA total of 11 differentially expressed protein spots were selected, including 5 upregulated proteins and 6 downregulated proteins. MALDI-TOF/TOF identified the upregulated proteins in hypopharyngeal carcinoma patients as alpha-2-HS-glycoprotein and haptoglobin and downregulated ones as Ig kappa chain C region and apolipoprotein A-I. Western blotting demonstrated that α-2-HS- glycoprotein expression level was consistent with that detected by 2-DE.
CONCLUSIONPatients with hypopharyngeal carcinoma show different plasma protein profiles from healthy individuals. These differentially expressed proteins may serve as potential specific tumor biomarkers for hypopharyngeal carcinoma.
