1.Assessment of Korea's Orthopedic Research Activities in the Top 15 Orthopedic Journals, 2008–2017

		                        			BACKGROUND: Bibliometrics is increasingly used to assess the quantity and quality of scientific research output in many research fields worldwide. This study aims to update Korea's worldwide research productivity in the field of orthopedics using bibliometric methods and to provide Korean surgeons and researchers with insights into such research. METHODS: Articles published in the top 15 orthopedic journals between 2008 and 2017 were retrieved using the Web of Science. The number of articles, citations and h-index (Hirsch index), funding sources, institutions, and journal patterns were analyzed. RESULTS: Of the total 39,494 articles, Korea's contribution accounted for 5.6% (2,161 articles), ranking fifth in the world in the number of publications. Korea ranked sixth (with 29,456) for total citations worldwide but ranked 17th (13.64) in terms of average citation per item and 14th (55) in terms of h-index. Korea showed the most prolific productivity in the field of sports medicine and arthroscopy. The institution that produced the highest number of publications was Seoul National University (n = 386, 17.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Orthopedic research in South Korea demonstrated high productivity in terms of the number of publications in high-quality journals between 2008 and 2017. However, total citations and average citations per article were still relatively low. Efforts should be made to increase citation rates for further improvement in research productivity in the field of orthopedics.

3.Analysis of Forensic Sciences Literature in SCIE from 2008 to 2017.

		                        			OBJECTIVES:
		                        			To analyze the literature on forensic sciences indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) in recent 10 years, and to understand the research status, characteristics and trends in the field of forensic sciences.
		                        		
		                        			METHODS:
		                        			Literature on forensic sciences from 2008 to 2017 in Web of Science (WoS) was retrieved. The documents number and geographical distribution, document types, source titles, organizations, research areas, authors, funding agencies, and the high cited articles were detected. The impact factors (IF) of journals were retrieved in Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics.
		                        		
		                        			RESULTS:
		                        			From 2008 to 2017, there were 21 001 documents on forensic sciences in SCIE. The main document type was articles, with English as the major language. With regards to research areas, pathology has the largest number of papers worldwide, and genetics and heredity has the largest number of publications in mainland China. Among the 18 journals where the documents was published, Forensic Science International ranks the first on publication count, and Forensic Science International Genetics has the highest IF (5.637) in the JCR 2017. In 2017, the number of papers from mainland China increased by 48.50% compared with 2016, which was higher than the global increase (32.63%) and the top-5 countries in terms of number of publications (the US, Germany, the UK, Australia, Italy). The average document count per organization is 1.98 worldwide and 1.17 in mainland China, respectively. The publication number per author is 0.53 worldwide and 0.36 in mainland China, respectively. Around 28.17% of the publications were funded, with National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) as the Top 1 funding agency (192 papers). Among the documents with citations, the most cited publication has been cited for 366 times.
		                        		
		                        			CONCLUSIONS
		                        			The yearly numbers of publications on forensic sciences are increasing during recent 10 years. Focusing on the mainland China, there would be more high-quality papers with the steady funding of NSFC.

4.A Bibliometric Analysis on Tuberculosis Research of Korea from 1979 to 2017

		                        			BACKGROUND: The prevalence, incidence, and mortality rates of tuberculosis (TB) have declined steadily in Korea since 1965. This study aimed to identify the characteristics and provide quantitative analysis of published medical literatures on TB written by researchers based in Korea. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search via the Web of Science database for articles in Science Citation Index (Expanded) journals, on TB, and published by researchers based in Korea, from inception to 2017. All articles were analyzed by publication year, publishing journal, article type, study design, research institutes, and research funds. RESULTS: During the study period, we identified 1,101 articles and included them for analysis. The first was published in 1979, while 105 were published in 2017. Between 1979 and 2017, the compound annual growth rate of TB articles by researchers based in Korea was 13.0%. Among 1,101 articles, 682 (61.9%) were clinical research and 383 (34.8%) were basic research. Studies with cross-sectional design were the most common type among the clinical research, while biochemistry was the most common field among the basic research. The number of articles dealing with diagnostics or treatment has increased significantly, although the number of articles on vaccines, and on operational and public health, has only a slight increase. The Ministry of Health and Welfare of Korea funded studies yielding 178 (20.1%) articles. CONCLUSION: Articles on TB, especially those on clinical aspects, and published by researchers based in Korea have been increasing rapidly since 1979.

5.Classification of the journal category “oral surgery” in the Scopus and the Science Citation Index Expanded: flaws and suggestions

		                        			OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the journal category “oral surgery” in Scopus and in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS), The Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (JKAOMS), and The Journal of Prosthodontic Research (JPR) were selected from the Scopus list of journals as oral surgery journals. Maxillofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (MPRS) was selected from PubMed as a Scopus oral surgery title. From these titles, 10 recently published articles were collected and used for reference analysis. RESULTS: The percentage of citations from oral surgery journals was 26.7%, 24.5%, and 40.1% for JKAOMS, MPRS, and JOMS, respectively. In total, 1.1% of JPR's citations were from oral surgery journals and significantly fewer from other journals (P<0.001). The percentage of citations from dentistry journals excluding oral surgery journals was 11.9%, 34.4%, and 15.8% for JKAOMS, MPRS, and JOMS, respectively. For JPR, 80.6% of citations were from dentistry journals and significantly more were from other journals (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Selected samples revealed that JPR is incorrectly classified as an oral surgery journal in Scopus. In addition, the scientific interaction among JKAOMS, MPRS, and JOMS was different to JPR in the reference analysis.

This study presents the recent status of journal metrics for Infection & Chemotherapy and introduces scholarly journal publishing policies or guidelines that have recently appeared. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A variety of journal metrics were analyzed based on the Web of Science Core Collection, including the nationality of authors the proportion of funded articles to original articles , manually calculated impact factor, the titles of journals in which articles were cited”, and the Hirsch index. RESULTS: Out of 181 articles of Infection & Chemotherapy published between 2015 and 2018, the highest number of authors were from Korea (165, 91.2%). There were articles from 11 other countries. The proportion of funded articles to original articles has increased yearly and has reached 46.7% in 2018. The manually calculated impact factor of the year 2017 was 1.728, which corresponded to 21.5% of the 2017 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) category of “infectious diseases”. There were 196 source journal titles that cited Infection & Chemotherapy in the 2015–2018 issues. The Hirsch index was 15. CONCLUSION: The metrics results above demonstrate that over the years, Infection & Chemotherapy was developed into a top-level international-level journal so that it could be utilized by researchers across the world. The adoption of new policies including author taxonomy, an open data policy, a clinical data sharing policy, the principles of transparency and best practice in scholarly publishing 3rd edition will help increase the transparency of the authorship and the scientific integrity of the articles.

8.How much progress has Blood Research made since the change of the journal title in 2013.

		                        			BACKGROUND: Blood Research (formerly) was renamed 5 years ago. It aimed to identify the progress of the renamed journal at the international level based on journal metrics. METHODS: Journal metrics, including total cites, impact factor, and Hirsch index were calculated or found from Scopus, SCimago Journal & Country Rank, and Web of Science on March 27, 2018. RESULTS: The number of citable articles from 2013 to 2017 was 196, and that of non-citable articles was 157. The authors belonged to 25 countries. The editorial board members were from 33 countries. Total cites in Scimago Journal & Country Rank and Web of Science Core Collection in 2017 was 257 and 235, respectively. The cites per two years from Scimago Journal & Country Rank and the calculated impact factor from Web of Science Core Collection in 2016 were 1.353 and 1.382, respectively. The number of citing authors' countries in Web of Science Core Collection was 61. The number of citing journals in Web of Science Core Collection was 422. In 2016, the Hirsch index was 12 for Scimago Journal & Country Rank, and that in Web of Science Core Collection was 10. CONCLUSION: Since the title change, Blood Research has progressed rapidly on the international scene in terms of journal metrics. In particular, the results of total cites, impact factor, and Hirsch index were outstanding. 10.Citation Analysis for Biomedical and Health Sciences Journals Published in Korea.

		                        			OBJECTIVES: A citation analysis of biomedical and health sciences journals was conducted based on their enlistment in journal databases to identify the factors contributing to the citation metrics. METHODS: Among the 1,219 academic journals managed by the National Center for Medical Information and Knowledge at the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 556 journals were included for analysis as of July 2016. The characteristics of the journals include history years, publication media, language, open-access policy as well as the status enlisted in international and domestic databases, such as Science Citation Index (SCI), Scopus, Medline, PubMed Central, Embase, and Korea Citation Index (KCI). Six bibliometric measures were collected from SCI, Scopus, and KCI as of 2015, the most recent disclosure year. Analyses of group differences and influential factors were conducted using t-tests, Mann-Whitney tests, and multiple regression. RESULTS: Journal characteristics, such as history years, publication media, and open-access policy, were not significant factors influencing global or domestical citation of the journals. However, global citations were higher for SCI and Medline enlisted journals than for their counterparts. Among KCI journals, the KCI impact factors of journals published in English only were lower. CONCLUSIONS: Efforts by journals to be enlisted in international databases, especially in SCI and Medline, are critical to enhance their global circulation. However, articles published in English only hinder the use of domestic researchers.
