Chinese Journal of School Health 2025;46(6):770-773
Objective:
To explore the relationship between sleep quality and mental health among middle school students, so as to provide scientific basis for improving mental health among adolescents.
Methods:
From September to December 2023, a stratified cluster random sampling method was employed to select 5 713 middle school students aged 13-18 from Shanghai, Suzhou, Taiyuan, Wuyuan, Xingyi, and Urumqi. Sleep quality and mental health were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Brief Adolescent Mental Health Assessment Questionnaire. Spearman correlation analysis and linear regression analysis were used to explore the relationship between sleep quality and various dimensions of mental health among middle school students.
Results:
There was a statistically significant difference in the total PSQI score among middle school students of different age groups ( H=226.49, P <0.01), and there was no statistically significant difference in the psychological health scores of middle school students in different age groups ( H=5.37, P >0.05). In terms of gender, the total PSQI score for girls [5.00 (3.00, 6.00)] was higher than that for boys [4.00 (2.00, 6.00)]; additionally, boys had higher mental health scores [85.00 (75.00, 90.00)] than females [83.00 (70.00, 89.00)], with statistically significant differences ( Z=-10.90, -8.16, P <0.01). Spearman correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between total PSQI scores and mental health scores ( r=-0.51, P <0.05) among middle school students. After controlling for variables such as maximum oxygen uptake, physical activity and nutritional status, linear regression analysis further confirmed that higher PSQI scores were associated with lower mental health scores ( B=-3.76, 95%CI = -4.15 to -3.38, P <0.01).
Conclusion
There is a negative correlation between PSQI scores and mental health scores among middle school students, indicating that improving sleep quality may contribute to better mental health among middle school students.

Objective:
To explore the association between physical activity and sleep quality among middle school students, so as to provide reference for adolescent sleep improvement.
Methods:
From September to December 2023, 5 713 middle school students aged 13-18 years were selected from Shanghai, Suzhou, Taiyuan, Wuyuan, Xingyi and Urumqi by stratified cluster random sampling method. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Evaluation of Physical Activity Levels of Children and Adolescents Aged 7-18 Years were used to investigate and evaluate sleep quality and physical activity. Comparisons between groups were made using the t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and associations between physical activity and sleep quality of middle school students were analyzed using Spearman correlation and linear regression methods.
Results:
The total PSQI scores were 4.0(2.0,6.0) and 5.0 (3.0,6.0) for boys and girls, respectively, with significant sex difference ( Z =-10.90, P <0.01); light physical activity(LPA) and moderate to vigorous physical activity(MVPA) of boys were 18.57 (2.86, 42.86) and 68.57 (35.71, 119.18)min, and girls were 14.29 (0.00, 30.00) and 55.71 (31.43, 92.86)min respectively, and the differences were statistically significant ( Z =3.65, -8.65 , P <0.01). The results of Spearman correlation regression showed that adolescents MVPA was negatively correlated with the total PSQI score ( r =-0.04, P <0.01). After controlling for variables such as mental health, nutritional status and maximum oxygen uptake, the results of linear regression analysis showed that PSQI total score negatively predicted MVPA among middle school students ( B =-4.76, 95% CI =-7.16 to -2.36, P <0.05).
Conclusion
The longer the duration of physical activity among middle school students, the better the quality of sleep.

ObjectiveTo clarify the relationship between intestinal flora and intestinal motility in rats with slow transit constipation (STC) and qi stagnation syndrome by conducting a pseudo-sterile experiment and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) technology. MethodsTwenty-four Wistar rats were randomly divided into normal group (n=6), STC with qi stagnation pattern group (n=6) and pseudo-sterile group (n=12). In the STC group with qi stagnation pattern, 3 mg/kg of loperamide suspension by intragastric administration combined with tail clamping stimulation were performed to establish the rat model of STC with qi stagnation pattern. After successful modeling, fresh feces from the rats in the STC with qi stagnation pattern group and the normal group were collected to prepare 100 mg/ml of fecal bacterial suspension. In the pseudo-sterile group, the antibiotic cocktail method was used (a mixed antibiotic suspension containing bacitracin, streptomycin sulfate, and neomycin sulfate at 20 mg/ml each was administered intragastrically) to establish pseudo-sterile rats model. After successful modeling, the rats were randomly divided into normal fecal bacterial liquid group and STC with qi stagnation pattern fecal bacterial liquid group, with six rats in each group, and then were given 10 ml/kg of the prepared corresponding rat fecal bacterial suspension by gavage. Rats in STC with qi stagnation pattern group were given an equal volume of sterile water by gavage. All groups were administered once a day for 7 consecutive days. The small intestinal propulsion rate of the STC with qi stagnation pattern group, the normal fecal bacterial liquid group, and STC with qi stagnation pattern fecal bacterial liquid group were compared. ELISA method was used to detect serum 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) levels. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the positive expression levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 receptor (5-HT3R) and 5-hydroxytryptamine 4 receptor (5-HT4R) in colon tissue. Western blot method was used to detect the protein expression levels of tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1), tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), serotonin transporter (SERT), and monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) in colon tissue. ResultsCompared to those in the normal fecal bacterial liquid group, the small intestinal propulsion rate, serum 5-HT level, positive expression of 5-HT3R and 5-HT4R in colon tissue, and protein expression of TPH1, TPH2, SERT and MAO-A significantly decreased in the STC with qi stagnation pattern group and STC with qi stagnation pattern fecal bacterial liquid group (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the indicators between the STC with qi stagnation pattern group and STC with qi stagnation pattern fecal bacterial liquid group (P>0.05). ConclusionThe intestinal flora in STC rats with qi stagnation pattern can lead to a slowdown in intestinal transmission function, whose mechanism may be related to intestinal motility disorders affected by the synthesis, transport, metabolism and other pathways of 5-HT.

Chinese Journal of School Health 2023;44(5):672-676
Objective:
To analyze the correlation between physical activity and depressive symptoms in adolescents, so as to provide a reference for the early prevention of depression among adolescents.
Methods:
Using a random cluster sampling method, 8 102 adolescents from Shanghai, Urumqi, Changsha and Kunming were investigated via the Physical Activity Assessment Questionnaire of Chinese Children and Adolescents aged 7 to 18 and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) for physical activity and depressive symptoms. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the correlation between physical activity and depressive symptoms in adolescents.
Results:
The proportion of adolescents who met moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) standard was 37.0%, and the detection rate of depressive symptoms was 25.6%. The detection rate of depressive symptomsin compliant with MVPA standard group was significantly lower than that in non compliant group among different age and gender( χ 2=7.62-34.54, P <0.05). Adolescents with severe depressive symptoms had high light intensity physical activity(LPA) duration and low vigorous intensity physical activity(VPA) duration, while adolescents with mild depressive symptoms or asymptomatic adolescents had higher MVPA duration. There were differences in LPA and VPA among adolescents with different levels of depressive symptoms in the overall sample, and the differences were still significant among girls, middle school and statistically significant differences in LPA, moderate intensity physical activity(MPA), MVPA were also found among the high school subgroup. However, differences only in LPA were observed among boys with different levels of depression( H=46.48, 10.31, 25.02, 29.54, 30.25, 19.80, 22.20, 9.54, 8.62, 18.06, P <0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression model showed that gender and duration of MVPA were significantly related to risk of depressive symptoms( OR=1.56, 1.42, P <0.05).
Conclusion
Physical activity among adolescents is significantly related to depressive symptoms. MVPA may be an effective measure to reduce the degree of depressive symptoms. To improve the physical health and prevent depression among adolescents, it is important to choose appropriate physical activity types and effectively increase the duration of MVPA.
6.Research progress on influencing factors of depressive symptoms in adolescents
Chinese Journal of School Health 2023;44(5):786-790
Abstract
In recent years, mental health problems such as anxiety and depression among adolescents in China have attracted attention from all walks of life. Given that adolescence is a transitional and critical period for individual development, mental health affect the developmental opportunities. Therefore, in the review, the effects of environment, psychosocial factors and behavioral patterns on depressive symptoms are analyzed by combining with the characteristics of physical and mental development among adolescents. It is found that early adolescence and even childhood should be the key period for the prevention and intervention of depression. In order to formulate effective interventions and prevention strategies, it is proposed that future research should combine real situation in China with active exploration of protective factors and early predictors of depression.
