Objective:
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has been performed for spinal tumors. However, the quantitative effect of SRS on postoperative residual cervical dumbbell tumors remains unknown. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the efficacy of SRS for treating postoperative residual cervical dumbbell tumors.
Methods:
We retrospectively reviewed cases of postoperative residual cervical dumbbell tumors from 1995 to 2020 in 2 tertiary institutions. Residual tumors underwent SRS (SRS group) or were observed with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up (observation group). Tumor regrowth rates were compared between the SRS and observation groups. Additionally, risk factors for tumor regrowth were analyzed.
Results:
A total of 28 cervical dumbbell tumors were incompletely resected. Eight patients were in the SRS group, and 20 in the observation group. The mean regrowth rate was not significantly lower (p = 0.784) in the SRS group (0.18 ± 0.29 mm/mo) than in the observation group (0.33 ± 0.40 mm/mo). In the multivariable Cox regression analysis, SRS was not a significant variable (hazard ratio [HR], 0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.18–1.79; p = 0.336).
Conclusion
SRS did not significantly decrease the tumor regrowth rate in our study. We believe that achieving maximal resection during the initial operation is more important than postoperative adjuvant SRS.

6.Structural Features of Optic Nerve Head in Glaucoma with Single-hemispheric and Bi-hemispheric Visual Field Defects

Purpose:
To compare the structural features of the optic nerve head (ONH) in moderate glaucoma patients with single-hemispheric and bi-hemispheric visual field (VF) defects.
Methods:
Patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and a VF mean deviation between -6 and -12 dB were retrospectively enrolled. Based on VF defect patterns, eyes were classified into two groups: those with single-hemispheric VF defects and those with bi-hemispheric VF defects. Structural features analyzed included Bruch’s membrane opening area, lamina cribrosa (LC) thickness, temporal β-zone parapapillary atrophy with and without Bruch's membrane (βPPA+BM, βPPA-BM, respectively), and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.
Results:
Out of 137 eyes from 124 patients, 80 eyes had single-hemispheric VF defects and 57 eyes had bi-hemispheric VF defects. The bi-hemispheric group exhibited longer axial length (p = 0.038), thinner central corneal thickness (p = 0.003), thinner LC (p < 0.001), and larger temporal βPPA+BM (p = 0.002) compared to the single-hemispheric group.
Conclusions
Among Korean OAG patients with moderate VF defects, those with bi-hemispheric VF defects showed more structurally vulnerable optic discs characterized by longer axial lengths, thinner central corneal thickness, thinner LC, and larger β PPA+BM compared to those with single-hemispheric VF defects. These findings underline the importance of evaluating ONH structures in monitoring glaucoma progression particularly in patients with extensive VF damage.
7.Relative Risks for Dementia among Individuals with Glaucoma: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Cohort Studies

Purpose:
To investigate the relative risks (RRs) for dementia among individuals with glaucoma.
Methods:
We conducted a search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases for observational cohort studies examining the association between glaucoma and dementia until March 2023. Two authors independently screened all titles and abstracts according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Pooled RR and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were generated using random-effect models.
Results:
The meta-analysis included 18 cohort studies conducted in eight countries and involving 4,975,325 individuals. The pooled RR for the association between glaucoma and all-cause dementia was 1.314 (95% CI, 1.099–1.572; I2 = 95%). The pooled RRs for the associations of open-angle glaucoma with Alzheimer dementia and Parkinson disease were 1.287 (95% CI, 1.007–1.646; I2 = 96%) and 1.233 (95% CI, 0.677–2.243; I2 = 73%), respectively. The pooled RRs for the associations of angle-closure glaucoma with all-cause dementia and Alzheimer dementia were 0.978 (95% CI, 0.750–1.277; I2 = 17%) and 0.838 (95% CI, 0.421–1.669; I2 = 16%), respectively. No evidence of publication bias was detected in the Begg-Mazumdar adjusted rank correlation test (p = 0.47).
Conclusions
Based on current observational cohort studies, there is evidence supporting that glaucoma is a risk factor for dementia in the adult population.
8.Relationship Forming Factors in the Interview Between Organ Procurement Coordinators and the Family of Brain Dead: A Qualitative Study on the Communication Experience of Organ Procurement Coordinators

Purpose:
: Interviews between the coordinator and the family of the brain dead for organ and tissue donation have a great impact on the increase in the consent rate of organ donation. It is necessary to find out empirically the factors for building a mutually respectful and reciprocal relationship in the interview between the coordinator and the family from the perspective of the research subject.
Methods:
: This study is a qualitative study, and data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 coordinators of the Korea Organ Donation Agency. The collected data were analyzed by two steps of text analysis and meaning reconstruction.
Results:
: The relationship building factors between the coordinator and the family of the brain dead analyzed in this study include ‘establishing trust, helping the family, empathy, active listening, friendliness, non-burdening, cautious approach, and sincerity’. Coordinators conducted interviews to deliver information to the family of the brain dead, sincerely and carefully through sympathy and listening, while working for the family at the same time. In these interviews, non-verbal and quasi-verbal communication as well as verbal expressions was actively used.
Conclusion
: The results of this study can be used for communication training of organ procurement coordinators.

This report provides a detailed description of the methodology for ophthalmic examinations according to the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VII and VIII (from 2017 to 2021). The KNHANES is a nationwide survey which has been performed since 1998 in representatives of whole Korean population. During the KNHANES VII and VIII, in addition to the ophthalmic questionnaire, intraocular pressure measurement, visual field test, auto refractometry, axial length and optical coherence tomography measurements were included. This new survey will provide not only provide normative and pathologic ophthalmic data including intraocular pressure, refractive error, axial length, visual field and precise measurement of anterior segment, macula and optic nerve with optical coherence tomography, but also a more accurate diagnosis for major adult blindness diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and other ocular diseases, for the national Korean population.
10.Effects of Amniotic Membrane Extract Eye Drops on Persistent Epithelial Defects of the Cornea

Purpose:
To evaluate the clinical efficacy of amniotic membrane extract eye drops (AMEEDs) in patients with persistent epithelial defects (PEDs) of the cornea.
Methods:
Sixteen patients with PEDs refractory to the conventional treatment were further treated with AMEEDs six times a day. Visual acuity, visual analog scale (VAS), esthesiometer score, and areas of the epithelial defects before and after 1 and 2 months of treatment were evaluated. After 2 months, AMEEDs were considered effective if all epithelial defects were healed, partially effective if the epithelial defects decreased in size compared with the baseline, and ineffective if the epithelial defects increased in size and required additional treatment.
Results:
After 2 months of treatment with AMEEDs, there was a reduction in the area of epithelial defects (5.2 ± 3.1 mm2 vs. 0.1 ± 0.1 mm2, respectively, p = 0.01), as well as a significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (0.8 ± 0.5 logarithm of minimal angle of resolution [LogMAR] vs. 0.6 ± 0.3 LogMAR, respectively, p = 0.03), and VAS scores (4.3 ± 1.0 vs. 2.8 ± 0.7, respectively, p = 0.04) compared with the baseline values. Treatment with AMEEDs was effective in 13 (81.3%) patients and partially effective in three (18.8%) patients.
Conclusions
AMEEDs could stimulate epithelial wound healing and improve ocular symptoms in patients with refractory PED. Therefore, AMEEDs could be considered an effective treatment option for refractory PEDs.
