Objective:
Previous studies have reported an association between cancer-related symptoms and perceived social support (PSS). The objective of this study was to analyze whether Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN), a prevalent side effect of chemotherapy, varies according to PSS level using a validated tool for CIPN at prospective follow-up.
Methods:
A total of 39 breast cancer patients were evaluated for PSS using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) prior to chemotherapy and were subsequently grouped into one of two categories for each subscale: low-to-moderate PSS and high PSS. CIPN was prospectively evaluated using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy 20 (CIPN20) at five time points. A linear mixed-effects model with square root transformation was employed to investigate whether the CIPN20 scales varied by PSS level and time point.
Results:
Statistical analysis of the MSPSS total scale and subscales revealed a significant effect of the friends subscale group and time point on the CIPN20 sensory scale. The sensory scale score of CIPN20 was found to be lower in participants with high PSS from friends in comparison to those with low-to-moderate PSS at 1 month post-chemotherapy (p=0.010).
Conclusion
This is the first study to prospectively follow the long-term effect of pre-treatment PSS from friends on CIPN. Further studies based on larger samples are required to analyze the effects of PSS on the pathophysiology of CIPN.
2.Application of Machine Learning Algorithms for Risk Stratification and Efficacy Evaluation in Cervical Cancer Screening among the ASCUS/LSIL Population: Evidence from the Korean HPV Cohort Study

Purpose:
We assessed human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype-based risk stratification and the efficacy of cytology testing for cervical cancer screening in patients with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS)/low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL).
Materials and Methods:
Between 2010 and 2021, we monitored 1,273 HPV-positive women with ASCUS/LSIL every 6 months for up to 60 months. HPV infections were categorized as persistent (HPV positivity consistently observed post-enrollment), negative (HPV negativity consistently observed post-enrollment), or non-persistent (neither consistently positive nor negative). HPV genotypes were grouped into high-risk (Hr) groups 1 (types 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58) and 2 (types 35, 39, 51, 56, 59, 66, and 68) and a low-risk group. Hr1 was subdivided into types (a) 16 and 18; (b) 31, 33, and 45; and (c) 52 and 58. Cox regression and machine learning (ML) algorithms were used to analyze progression rates.
Results:
Among 1,273 participants, 17.6% with persistent HPV infections experienced disease progression versus no progression in the HPV-negative group (p < 0.001). Cox analysis revealed the highest hazard ratios (HRs) for Hr1-a (11.6, p < 0.001), followed by Hr1-b (9.26, p < 0.001) and Hr1-c (7.21, p < 0.001). HRs peaked at 12-24 months, with Hr1-a maintaining significance at 24-36 months (10.7, p=0.034). ML analysis identified the final cytology change pattern as the most significant factor, with 14-15 months the optimal time for detecting progression from the first examination.
Conclusion
In ASCUS/LSIL cases, follow-up strategies should be based on HPV risk types. Annual follow-up was the most effective monitoring for detecting progression/regression.

9.Considerations for the Implementation of Automated Blood Processing System Using the Platelet-Rich Plasma Method in Korea

Red blood cell concentrates, platelet concentrates, and fresh plasma are separated from whole blood through centrifugation. The main manufacturing methods, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and buffy-coat (BC), are currently in use. The BC method has been increasingly adopted because of its high recovery rate of platelets and plasma, lower platelet activation, and reduced transfusion-related complications. Korea’s first Master Plan for Blood Management (2021∼2025) considered transitioning from the PRP method to the BC method and introducing automation to expand the supply of leukoreduced blood components. On the other hand, several issues have prevented this transition. In 2023, the US FDA cleared an automated system for the single centrifugation method without switching to the BC method. This paper discusses these approaches.
