1.Comparison of Suicide Completion Rate in Korean Students Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Pandemics

Objective:
This study compared the incidence of suicide cases among Korean students before and after the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Methods:
Aggregated case reports of all known suicide victims attending elementary, middle, and high school in South Korea from 2017 to 2022 were analyzed. These reports, compiled by teachers under the directive of the South Korean Department of Education, surveyed the circumstances surrounding each suicide and identified associated risk factors posthumously.
Results:
The completed suicide rate was 2.37 per 100,000 students pre-COVID-19 (2017–2019), significantly increasing to 3.37 per 100,000 students post-COVID-19 (2020–2022; odds ratio [OR] 1.42, p<0.001). The rate began to rise approximately 6 months into the pandemic and continued to worsen throughout 2021 and 2022. Fair attendance significantly increased in 2020 (74.83%, p=0.003) during the initial stage of school closure measures compared to 2019 (58.27%) among students prior to suicide completion. However, as social distancing measures continued, “absence due to medical reasons” showed a significant increase in 2022 (23.56%) compared to 2019 (13.67%, p=0.025) and 2020 (9.52%, p<0.001) among these students. Among those who completed suicide, teachers reported increased signs of depression and anxiety posthumously compared to pre-COVID-19 periods.
Conclusion
The incidence of completed suicide among students was significantly higher in the post-COVID-19 years compared to pre-COVID-19. Attendance records and teachers’ reports indicated a deterioration in mental health among these students before suicide completion, highlighting the need to consider mental health impacts when implementing future quarantine policies.
2.Analyzing the Impact of Social Distancing Policies During COVID-19 on the Risk and Rescue of Suicide Attempters Presenting to the Emergency Department: Applying the Risk-Rescue Rating Scale

Objective:
This study aimed to investigate characteristics of suicide attempters who visited the emergency department to identify physical risk factors and rescue factors, and to assess the impact of social distancing during coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) on suicide attempters.
Methods:
The study utilized data from the medical records of suicide attempters who visited the Bucheon Regional Emergency Medical Center of Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital for 3 years from 2019 and the consultation records of the Life Love Crisis Response Team. This cross-sectional study analyzed changes in risk and rescue characteristics of suicide attempters before, during, and after the implementation of social distancing policies. The Risk-Rescue Rating Scale (RRRS) was used to assess the risk and rescue of suicide attempters.
Results:
During the implementation of social distancing, the RRRS for physical risk demonstrated a 1.67-fold increase in low-risk cases, which further escalated to a 2.39-fold increase post-implementation compared to the period prior to social distancing. Additionally, the RRRS indicated that behaviors became 1.44 times less rescued amid social distancing, with increased tendencies to conceal the act to evade detection and a reluctance to seek help (p<0.001).
Conclusion
Our findings indicate that it is important to develop suicide prevention programs for low-risk suicide attempts and to identify the characteristics of suicide attempts that occur during large-scale social isolation, such as infectious diseases, in order to develop strategies for suicide prevention in the future.
3.Effects of Methylphenidate and Atomoxetine Treatment on Improvement of Motor Coordination in Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Objective:
To investigate the effects of methylphenidate and atomoxetine treatment on motor coordination in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Methods:
In this single-site, open-label, naturalistic follow-up study, 157 children (7.6±1.4 years; 139 males) with ADHD were recruited between March 2015 and May 2020 from the Department of Psychiatry, Asan Medical Center, and treated for 12 weeks with methylphenidate (n=48) or atomoxetine (n=109). Children completed the Advanced Test of Attention (ATA), and caregivers completed the ADHD Rating Scale (ARS) questionnaire and Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ) at baseline and at 12 weeks. Paired t-tests, a mixed-effects model, and linear regression were used to compare treatment groups and assess factors influencing motor coordination changes.
Results:
Methylphenidate and atomoxetine resulted in significant improvement in DCDQ fine motor/handwriting, general coordination, and total scores over 12 weeks. Fine motor/handwriting had a significant main effect for time (F1=16.64, p<0.001, η2=0.097); however, the interaction effect between group and time was not significant (F1=0.24, p=0.625, η2=0.002). Changes in parent-reported ARS inattention scores (β=-0.174, p=0.029) and auditory commission errors of ATA (β=0.191, p=0.022) were significantly associated with changes in fine motor/handwriting. Additionally, changes in parent-reported ARS inattention scores (β=-0.177, p=0.034) and rater-reported ARS inattention scores (β=-0.198, p=0.017) were significant predictors of improvements in general coordination in separate models.
Conclusion
Methylphenidate and atomoxetine had a positive effect on motor coordination in children with ADHD. Improvement in motor coordination was associated with ADHD symptom improvement.
4.Brain Activation in Response to Literature-Related Activities

Objective:
A humanities-based approach to understanding the brain can yield valuable insights, advancing neuroscience and enhancing mental, emotional, and social well-being. This study was aimed at exploring how engagement in literature-related activities stimulates brain activity in the prefrontal cortex.
Methods:
We recruited 24 healthy male participants aged 20 to 29 years. They completed clinical scales assessing depression, anxiety, attention, and humanistic knowledge. They also performed six tasks comprising various literature-related cognitive challenges while hemodynamic changes in their frontal cortices were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.
Results:
Task 1 (word memory and recognition) increased activation in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC), as did Task 2 (emotional words classification), which also elevated activity in the left orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Task 3 (understanding context) increased activation in the dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC). Tasks 4 (interpersonal relationship) and 5 (listening, memory, understanding, and expression) drove similar increases in the frontopolar and DLPFC regions. Task 6 (creative activities using characters and items) significantly activated multiple regions, including the right and left VLPFC and OFC. Humanistic knowledge scores were positively correlated with left and right DLPFC activation in Tasks 3 and 5, respectively. Conversely, Task 6 showed negative correlations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder scores and both right DLPFC and right OFC activation.
Conclusion
This study identified key brain regions involved in literature activities. Complex activities (semantic processing, understanding and creative expression, decision-making and emotional regulation, etc.) stimulated various regions of prefrontal cortices, including the VLPFC, DLPFC, and OFC.
5.Factors associated with Hypertensive Retinopathy among People with Hypertension: A Systematic Review

Purpose:
The associated factors for hypertensive retinopathy (HTR) are rarely investigated. This study aimed to identify the associated factors for HTR using a systematic review.
Methods:
The review included cross-sectional, case-controlled, and cohort studies on HTR risk factors published in Korean and English with full texts available from PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Korean databases. Methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist.
Results:
Eleven studies were finally selected, and three studies including patients with hypertension without diabetes mellitus, older age, male sex, alcohol consumption, the duration of hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, microalbuminuria, high creatinine levels, chronic kidney disease, and cardiovascular changes were identified as factors associated with HTR. Conversely, in the remaining eight studies, younger age, non-smoking status, and renal function indicators (albuminuria, high creatinine levels, chronic kidney disease, and uric acid) were identified as associated factors.
Conclusions
Regardless of the inclusion of patients with diabetes mellitus, impaired kidney functions were determined as significant factors associated with retinopathy in patients with HTR. However, considering a limited number of evidence and lack of evidence to confirm causality, we recommend further research on renal function and HTR.

Recent advancements in tuberculosis treatment research emphasize innovative strategies that enhance treatment efficacy, reduce adverse effects, and adhere to patient-centered care principles. As tuberculosis remains a significant global health challenge, integrating new and repurposed drugs presents promising avenues for more effective management, particularly against drug-resistant strains. Recently, the spectrum concept in tuberculosis infection and disease has emerged, underscoring the need for research aimed at developing treatment plans specific to each stage of the disease. The application of precision medicine to tailor treatments to individual patient profiles is crucial for addressing the diverse and complex nature of tuberculosis infections. Such personalized approaches are essential for optimizing therapeutic outcomes and improving patient adherence—both of which are vital for global tuberculosis eradication efforts. The role of tuberculosis cohort studies is also emphasized, as they provide critical data to support the development of these tailored treatment plans and deepen our understanding of disease progression and treatment response. To advance these innovations, a robust tuberculosis policy framework is required to foster the integration of research findings into practice, ensuring that treatment innovations are effectively translated into improved health outcomes worldwide.
8.Impact of pulmonary tuberculosis on lung cancer screening: a narrative review

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening has demonstrated efficacy in reducing lung cancer mortality by enabling early detection. In several countries, including Korea, LDCT-based screening for high-risk populations has been incorporated into national healthcare policies. However, in regions with a high tuberculosis (TB) burden, the effectiveness of LDCT screening for lung cancer may be influenced by TB-related pulmonary changes. Studies indicate that the screen-positive rate in TB-endemic areas differs from that in low-TB prevalence regions. A critical challenge is the differentiation between lung cancer lesions and TB-related abnormalities, which can contribute to false-positive findings and increase the likelihood of unnecessary invasive procedures. Additionally, structural lung damage from prior TB infections can alter LDCT interpretation, potentially reducing diagnostic accuracy. Nontuberculous mycobacterial infections further complicate this issue, as their radiologic features frequently overlap with those of TB and lung cancer, necessitating additional microbiologic confirmation. Future research incorporating artificial intelligence and biomarkers may enhance diagnostic precision and facilitate a more personalized approach to lung cancer screening in TB-endemic settings.

10.Trauma counseling centers for psychological support to manage trauma from workplace injuries in Korea: a narrative review

This review describes a psychological support service designed to address post-traumatic stress disorder in workers impacted by workplace injuries, assisting in their recovery and facilitating their return to work. It explores the rationale and context behind establishing trauma counseling centers for these individuals, along with the status, roles, future directions, and recommendations for these centers. The review details the operational framework and functions of the workplace injury trauma management program, the scope of the impacts of such injury, the groups targeted for crisis intervention, and the psychological interventions tailored to each stage of recovery. Initiated as a pilot project in 2018, trauma counseling centers for workers have gradually become more common, with 23 centers in operation across Korea as of 2024.
