1.Isolation of a foodborne Bacillus cereus strain and its effect on intestinal mucosal immunity-associated factors and gut microbial community in mice.

		                        			Bacillus cereus is a common foodborne pathogen. Accidently eating food contaminated by B. cereus will cause vomiting or diarrhea, and even death in severe cases. In the present study, a B. cereus strain was isolated from spoiled rice by streak culture. The pathogenicity and drug resistance of the isolated strain were analyzed by drug sensitivity test and PCR amplification of virulence-associated gene respectively. Cultures of the purified strain were injected intraperitoneally into mice to examine their effects on intestinal immunity-associated factors and gut microbial communities, to provide references for the pathogenic mechanism and medication guidance of these spoilage microorganisms. The results showed that the isolated B. cereus strain was sensitive to norfloxacin, nitrofurantoin, tetracycline, minocycline, ciprofloxacin, spectinomycin, clindamycin, erythrocin, clarithromycin, chloramphenicol, levofloxacin, and vancomycin, but resistant to bactrim, oxacillin and penicillin G. The strain carries seven virulence-associated genes including hblA, hblC, hblD, nheA, nheB, nheC and entFM, which are involved in diarrhea-causing toxins production. After infecting mice, the isolated B. cereus strain was found to cause diarrhea in mice, and the expression levels of immunoglobulins and inflammatory factors in the intestinal mucosae of the challenged mice were significantly up-regulated. Gut microbiome analysis showed that the composition of gut microbial community in mice changed after infection with B. cereus. The abundance of the uncultured_bacterium_f_Muribaculaceae in Bacteroidetes, which is a marker of body health, was significantly decreased. On the other hand, the abundance of uncultured_bacterium_f_Enterobacteriaceae, which is an opportunistic pathogen in Proteobacteria and a marker of dysbacteriosis, was significantly increased and was significantly positively correlated with the concentrations of IgM and IgG. These results showed that the pathogenic B. cereus carrying diarrhea type virulence-associated gene can activate the immune system by altering the composition of gut microbiota upon infection.

2.Association of glycemic index using HbA1c and sensorineural hearing loss in diabetes mellitus type 2 patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

		                        			To systematically review the available evidence on the association of HBA1c levels and development of sensorineural hearing loss and to quantitatively analyze the available data on HBA1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and sensorineural hearing loss to determine an HbA1c level that may be associated with the risk of having sensorineural hearing loss.
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			Design: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Eligibility Criteria: Cross-sectional studies, or cohort studies which were limited to English language that investigated the correlation of glycemic index using HBA1c and sensorineural hearing loss among adult type 2 diabetic patients which were done from January 2010 to December 2021. Studies with no published outcome, incomplete data or that were ongoing as of August 1, 2022 were also excluded.

Risk of Bias: Risk of Bias was assessed using the Guidelines for Cochrane Collaboration

		                        			Results:
		                        			A total of 8 studies were reviewed with 2,103 participants in all. Six articles compared hearing loss incidence between diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Overall, there were a total of 881 diabetic patients and 1222 non-diabetic patients. There was a significantly lower incidence of sensorineural hearing loss in non-diabetic patients with a risk ratio of 1.89, 95% CI [1.65, 2.16]. Three articles compared the HbA1c levels of diabetic patients with or without sensorineural hearing loss. Diabetic patients without sensorineural hearing loss had significantly lower HbA1c levels compared to those with sensorineural hearing loss with mean difference of 1.04, 95%CI [0.82, 1.25].
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			In conclusion, this meta-analysis showed a higher prevalence rate of sensorineural hearing loss among patients with diabetes mellitus compared to non-diabetic patients. Moreover, poor glycemic control among diabetic patients with a glycemic index based on HbA1c of more than 8.3 (6.97-9.6) is associated with sensorineural hearing loss.

		                        			In recent years, emerging technology medical devices have developed rapidly. How to more scientifically and more efficiently regulate these novel medical devices so as to improve access to advanced medical technology while ensuring safety and effectiveness is a new challenge faced by regulatory authorities, and is also the core topic of regulatory science. New tools, new standards and new methods are important means to achieve regulatory science. "Medical Device Development Tool" proposed by the U.S. FDA is a novel medical device regulatory science tool, which can help medical device developers to predict and evaluate product performance more efficiently. It is also helpful for regulatory authorities to make regulatory decisions more efficiently. This study introduces the concept, qualification process, role of MDDT in medical device regulation and MDDT examples, and makes some discussion on the device evaluation from the perspective of reliability and validity. 4.Prevalence of and factors associated with nutrition facts panel use among young adults in the National Capital Region, Philippines

		                        			Objective:
		                        			This study identified the prevalence of Nutrition Facts Panel (NFP) use. It determined the factors associated with NFP use among young adults aged 19-30 years old in the National Capital Region (NCR).
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			This analytical cross-sectional study collected data using a developed survey questionnaire. It was pretested to 32 respondents and administered online among young adults aged 19 to 30 years old residing in NCR at the time of the study, with a target sample size of 384. Convenience sampling was used to gather study participants. Nominal, ordinal, and interval data were summarized as frequencies and proportions. Mean and standard deviation were computed for ratio and interval data. Multiple logistic regression was used to test for the association to NFP use, reported as odds ratios.
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			Study findings showed that the prevalence of NFP use among the respondents was 50.49% (95% CI: 44.64 – 54.81%). The factors found to be associated to NFP use were: 1) being a primary household food shopper (p-value= 0.029; OR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.05–2.63), 2) having a special diet (p-value= 0.001; OR: 3.40; 95% CI: 1.62–7.14), 3) using nutritional supplements (p-value= 0.041; OR: 1.51; 95% CI: 1.02–2.25), 4) preparing food at home (p-value= 0.019; OR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.08–2.49), and 5) engaging in physical activity (p-value< 0.001; OR: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.37–3.06) regularly.
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			The findings show the need for improved nutrition education and promotion, especially in the NFP. The study recommended improvement in the study methodology and nutrition education programs. 7.Association between the awareness of Nutrition Facts Panel and prepackaged food purchase behavior among residents.

		                        			Objective: To explore the association between the cognition of Nutrition Facts Panel and prepackaged food purchase behavior among residents in six provinces in China. Methods: Using a multi-stage sampling method, 3 002 adults aged 18-70 were selected from the western region (Sichuan), eastern region (Guangdong, Jiangsu, Beijing), central region (Henan), and northeastern region (Heilongjiang) of China from July 2020 to March 2021. Socio-demographic characteristics of participants and their cognition of Nutrition Facts Panel and prepackaged food purchase behavior were collected through questionnaire. A multivariate binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between cognition of Nutrition Facts Panel and prepackaged food purchase behavior. Results: The age of 3 002 subjects was (42.3±13.4) years, among which 63.8% (1 914) were female, 66.7% knew the Nutrition Facts Panel, 49.8% would read it when purchasing, 30.7% could understand it, and 56.6% (1 699) bought prepackaged food more than once a week. The results of multivariate analysis showed that after adjusting for relevant confounding factors, compared with the participants knowing but not reading the Nutrition Facts Panel, the group knowing and reading was more likely to buy 11 types of prepackaged food at least once a week (all P<0.05). Compared with the participants reading but not understanding the Nutrition Facts Panel, the group reading and understanding was less likely to buy 11 types of prepackaged food at least once a week (all P<0.05). 8.Risk assessment of Cronobacter sakazakii in infant formula powder.

		                        			Objective: To assess the risk of foodborne diseases caused by Cronobacter sakazakii in infant formula powder from retail to feeding and provide formulate suggestions for safe feeding of infants at home. Methods: This study used the special monitoring and risk monitoring data of infant formula powder in Heilongjiang Province and combined data at home and abroad. The @RISK software was used to evaluate the disease risk caused by Cronobacter sakazakii in the process of infant formula powder from retail to feeding. Results: According to the results of this quantitative risk assessment, the risk of foodborne diseases caused by Cronobacter sakazakii at the current consumption pattern in Heilongjiang Province was 5.158×10-5 persons/million (40.0 ℃ and 50.0 ℃), 1.072×10-7 persons/million (60.0 ℃), 5.544×10-14 persons/million (70.0 ℃). When the feeding time of infant formula powder was adjusted to 0-2 h and 2-3 h respectively, the above prediction results did not change. When it was adjusted to 3-4 h, the risk increased. If it was adjusted to 4-24 h, the number of Cronobacter sakazakii increased by 14-24 orders of magnitude at room temperature. If the initial pollution concentration (after flushing) was adjusted to 1 MPN/ml, the average disease risk per meal was 805.7 persons/million (40.0 ℃ and 50.0 ℃), 1.7 persons/million (60.0 ℃) and 9.1 × 10-7 persons/million (70.0 ℃). The results of sensitivity analysis showed that the water temperature (70.0 ℃), initial pollution concentration, room storage time and temperature were important factors of risk. Conclusion: Controlling the contamination level of Cronobacter sakazakii in infant formula powder, controlling the feeding time within 3 h, storing in refrigerator and mixing with water with temperature not lower than 70.0 ℃ are effective measures to prevent infants from eating infant formula powder infected by Cronobacter sakazakii.

9.Metagenomic characterization of the culturable bacterial community structure of Tapuy, a Philippine indigenous rice wine, reveals significant presence of potential probiotic bacteria

		                        			Tapuy is an indigenous fermented rice wine produced in the Northern areas of the Philippines. Fermented foods and drinks have gained interest due to their associated health benefits, attributable to probiotic bacteria in the food items. However, pathogenic bacteria may also be present in fermented food and pose health risks, signifying a need for standardization. Currently, there is limited knowledge on the bacterial content of tapuy.
		                        		
		                        			Objectives:
		                        			This study aimed to characterize the bacterial diversity and community structure of culturable bacteria in traditionally fermented tapuy samples, to perform standardization of tapuy fermentation, and to compare the bacterial diversity and community structure of culturable bacteria in laboratory fermented tapuy with that of the traditional samples.
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			Tapuy samples were obtained from four municipalities in Benguet, Philippines. Laboratory fermentation of tapuy was performed simultaneously with the fermentation in the sampling site using a standardized protocol. Samples were plated on de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) agar and NA, and the colonies were harvested for DNA extraction. DNA samples were sent for 16S rDNA metagenomic sequencing.
Results. Metagenomic analysis revealed the presence of many bacterial species that were previously unreported in tapuy. Traditional tapuy samples were composed primarily of members of the genera Bacillus and Lactobacillus in varying proportions. Potential probiotic bacteria were abundant in Kapangan (97.42%) and Sablan (99.89%) field samples. B. wiedmannii was present in all samples and was identified as a harmful species. Laboratory fermentation increased the abundance of potential probiotic bacteria in Itogon and La Trinidad samples (differences of 75.36% and 78.36%, respectively). It decreased the quantity of B. wiedmannii in La Trinidad (a difference of 97.1%). Laboratory fermented samples generally exhibited higher bacterial diversity and species richness compared to field samples.
		                        		
		                        			Conclusions
		                        			Traditionally fermented tapuy samples contained a significant proportion of potential probiotic bacteria belonging to the genera Bacillus and Lactobacillus. Laboratory fermented samples were found to have higher bacterial diversity and richness compared to field samples. The significant presence of potential probiotic bacteria suggests that tapuy is a good candidate for development into functional food and a good source of likely probiotic species that could be explored for health applications. 10.Risk factors for food sensitization in children with atopic dermatitis: a single-center cross-sectional study.

		                        			OBJECTIVES:
		                        			To study the risk factors for food sensitization and the influence of food sensitization on quality of life and clinical signs in children with atopic dermatitis (AD).
		                        		
		                        			METHODS:
		                        			A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 241 children with AD, including demographic features, age of onset, severity of AD, quality of life, physical examination results, skin prick test (SPT) results, serum total IgE levels, and eosinophil count. According to the results of SPT, the children were divided into a food sensitization group (n=127) and a non-food sensitization group (n=114). The multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors for food sensitization in children with AD.
		                        		
		                        			RESULTS:
		                        			The prevalence rate of food sensitization was 52.7% (127/241) in the children with AD. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that birth in autumn or winter, age of onset of AD<12 months, severe AD, and total IgE>150 IU/mL were risk factors for food sensitization (P<0.05). Compared with the non-food sensitization group, the food sensitization group had a significantly poorer quality of life (P=0.008) and significantly higher prevalence rates of non-specific hand/foot dermatitis and palmar hyperlinearity (P<0.05). Compared with the single food sensitization group, the multiple food sensitization group had more severe AD and a significantly higher proportion of children with exclusive breastfeeding or total IgE>150 IU/mL (P<0.05).
		                        		
		                        			CONCLUSIONS
		                        			The AD children born in autumn or winter, or those with early onset (<12 months), severe AD or total IgE>150 IU/mL have a higher risk of food sensitization.
