Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2025;55(1):119-136

		                        			 Purpose:
This study aimed to understand the experiences of dialysis and their meaning among patients with chronic kidney disease through a meta-synthesis of the existing literature. Since 2010, the prevalence of end-stage renal disease has doubled in South Korea, which has the sixth-highest incidence worldwide. Although most kidney disease patients undergo dialysis to attenuate disease-related symptoms and prolong their lives, the implications of dialysis on their lives, together with the role played by patients’ significant others, remain underexplored. Similarly, existing research has not considered both patients with hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

		                        			Methods:
In this meta-synthesis, seven electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, DBpia, KISS, and RISS) were searched for the terms “dialysis” and “qualitative.” Thirty qualitative studies were selected for examination.

		                        			Results:
The overriding theme observed in the studies was “I do not have much time left.”–navigating the dual realities of one’s limited existence, while other key themes were: (1) the inevitable experience of the troubles of dialysis, (2) life is extended, but deteriorating in every aspect, (3) accepting dialysis with a positive outlook for life, and (4) essential support experienced in an exhausting life.

		                        			Conclusion
These findings are important for the design and delivery of practical and tailored nursing interventions to help patients overcome the various challenges related to dialysis treatment, and improve their quality of life.

5.Gender Differences in Caregiving Burden, Marital Intimacy, and Sexuality Information Needs among Spouses of Colon Cancer Patients
Asian Oncology Nursing 2024;24(4):205-215

		                        			 Purpose:
Colon cancer patients and their spouses face significant physical and emotional challenges. This study aimed to compare caregiver burden, marital intimacy, and sexuality information needs between male and female spouses of colon cancer patients and to explore correlations among these variables.

		                        			Methods:
A survey was conducted with 131 spouses from a tertiary care hospital in Seoul. There were 65 male respondents and 66 female respondents. Data collected from January to September 2018 used tools such as caregiver burden, marital intimacy, and sexual information needs and were analyzed using SPSS 25.0.

		                        			Results:
Key findings include significant gender differences: female spouses were found to have a higher caregiver burden, especially in physical and emotional domains, while male spouses reported higher marital intimacy, including emotional and sexual intimacy. Sexual information needs showed no major gender differences, though male spouses had higher sexual satisfaction. Both male and female spouses demonstrated a negative correlation between caregiver burden and marital intimacy, while female spouses notably showed a positive correlation between marital intimacy and sexual information needs.

		                        			Conclusion
This study indicates that female spouses need nursing interventions to alleviate physical and emotional stress, possibly through support systems such as volunteer programs.Meanwhile, male spouses require education and communication programs to improve marital intimacy.

6.The Effect of P6 Acupressure on Nausea, Vomiting and Retching of Patients with Liver Cancer Undergoing Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization (TACE) Using Nonequivalent Control Group Non-synchronized Design
Asian Oncology Nursing 2024;24(4):216-227

		                        			 Purpose:
Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization (TACE) is administered repeatedly throughout all stages of liver cancer, often leading to side effects like nausea, vomiting, and retching. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical impact of P6 acupressure using Sea-Band® wristbands on these symptoms following TACE.

		                        			Methods:
From October 2017 to March 2018, 90 liver cancer patients were recruited from a tertiary hospital and divided into three groups: control, placebo, and P6 acupressure. The control group received standard nursing care, while the placebo group underwent SI3 acupressure on the lateral hand, and the P6 acupressure group used Sea-Band® wristbands for four days. Symptoms were measured at seven time points using Rhodes’ INVR tool.

		                        			Results:
Data analysis with SPSS revealed that the P6 acupressure group had significantly lower total INVR scores, as well as reduced vomiting (F=5.53, p<.001) and retching (F=3.35, p<.032) compared to the placebo and control groups. Nausea scores, however, did not show a significant difference across the groups (F=1.78, p<.090).

		                        			Conclusion
This study highlights that P6 acupressure is a safe, non-invasive, and cost-effective intervention that effectively reduces vomiting and retching in liver cancer patients post-TACE. It recommends incorporating this intervention into clinical practice, alongside comprehensive nursing education on symptom management.

		                        			 Purpose:
This study aims to explore the trend of nursing education and major research themes in the Journal of Korean Academic Society of Nursing Education (JKASNE) over 30 years. Methods: A total of 1,026 articles, published in the JKASNE from 1995 to 2023, were analyzed using the Microsoft Excel program for descriptive statistics and NetMiner for a word cloud of Korean keywords.

		                        			Results:
Most research subjects were healthy people (n=841). Education-related research topics (n=619) were categorized into nine domains: educational methods, educational curriculum, study type and methods, knowledge level and contents, psychosocial variables related to knowledge and education, attitude, behavior, development and evaluation of educational programs, and effects of educational programs. Quantitative (n=835) and descriptive studies (n=497) were determined to be the most common research designs. Self-reported questionnaires were the most common method used in surveys (n=581) and experimental studies (n=153). Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and other statistical techniques were used. The keywords in the JKASNE reflected various aspects of nursing research. General terms related to nursing education, such as "nursing students," "nurses," and "nursing education," appeared with high frequency, while more specific terms and phrases reflecting educational competencies and characteristics, such as "self-efficacy," "clinical performance ability," and "communication knowledge," were also prominently featured.

		                        			Conclusion
The JKASNE has published mainly education-focused papers. Analyzing the full set of papers published in JKASNE and examining their characteristics is very meaningful and helpful for the future development of Korean nursing education.
