1.Cytotoxic Compounds Obtained through Cell Viability Screening of Fungal Extracts, Isolated from Urban Soil Samples I

		                        			 Soil microorganisms have been reported to interact with plants, playing key roles such as providingnutrients  essential  for  plant  growth  and  protecting  them  from  plant  pathogens.  Additionally,  various  bioactive molecules  from  soil  significantly  contribute  to  controlling  diseases  threatening  human  such  as  cancer  and infectious diseases. Considering the crucial roles and potential of these soil microorganisms, the Natural Products Drug  Discovery  research  group  (NPDD)  at  Duksung  Women’s  University  collected  soil  samples  from  various environments, isolated fungi from the soil, and aimed to discover bioactive compounds. In this process, 96 fungal strains were cultured on small scale to generate their ethyl acetate extracts, which were subsequently screened for cell viability using MDA-MB-231 triple-negative breast cancer cells. Among them, a subset of 17 with over 60% inhibitory activity were selected as top-performing strains, and other 13 strains with below 60% were chosen for large-scale  fermentation  candidates  by  HR-ESI-MS  dereplication  process  to  discover  new  bioactive  molecules.Chemical  investigation  of  a  part  of  these  large-scale  fermentation  candidates  led  to  the  isolation  of  13  major metabolites (1–13), and all isolates were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 cells. As a result, strigaibol  C  (1),  trichoguizaibol  J  (2),  beauvericin  (3),  and  sclerotioramine  (13)  showed  strong  inhibitory activities with IC50  values of 0.99, 0.68, 4.25, and 21.8  μM, respectively.

3.Resveratrol attenuates aging-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in the rat heart

		                        			 RESULTS:
		                        			Resveratrol significantly reduced cardiac hypertrophy and remodeling in aging hearts. In addition, resveratrol significantly ameliorated aging-induced mitochondrial dysfunction (e.g., decreased oxygen respiration and increased hydrogen peroxide emission) and mitochondria-dependent apoptotic signaling (the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening sensitivity, and cleaved caspase-3 protein levels).Resveratrol also significantly attenuated aging-induced apoptosis (determined via cleaved caspase-3 staining and TUNEL-positive myonuclei) in cardiac muscles. 
		                        		
		                        			CONCLUSION
		                        			This study demonstrates that resveratrol treatment has a beneficial effect on aging-induced cardiac remodeling by ameliorating mitochondrial dysfunction and inhibiting mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in the heart. 
		                        		
		                        		
		                        		
		                        	
4.Dietary isoflavone intake among breast cancer survivors and cancer-free women

		                        			 BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
		                        			Isoflavones are estrogen-like compounds found in plants and their health effects remain equivocal. We investigated dietary isoflavone intake and its associated factors in Korean breast cancer survivors, with a comparison to cancer-free women. 
		                        		
		                        			SUBJECTS/METHODS:
		                        			The usual dietary intake of breast cancer survivors (n = 981, mean age 52 yrs) in 9 hospitals between 2012 and 2019 was assessed using 3-day food records or food frequency questionnaires (FFQs). They were age-matched to 2,943 cancer-free women who completed FFQs as part of a nationwide study conducted between 2012 and 2016. We used the flavonoid database of common Korean foods and the Phenol-Explorer database to estimate isoflavone intake. The contribution of each food or food group to the total isoflavone intake was calculated. The adjusted least-squares means of dietary isoflavone intake according to lifestyle and clinical factors were calculated using generalized linear models. 
		                        		
		                        			RESULTS:
		                        			Breast cancer survivors had a higher mean dietary isoflavone intake (23.59 mg/day) than cancer-free women (17.81 mg/day). Major food sources, including tofu, soybeans, and doenjang, contributed to over 70% of the isoflavone intake in both groups. When we estimated dietary isoflavone intake according to lifestyle characteristics, isoflavone intake increased with higher scores of adherence to the American Cancer Society dietary guidelines but decreased with increasing body mass index in both groups. Among cancer-free women, dietary isoflavone intake was higher among those who had never smoked and among dietary supplement users. Among breast cancer survivors, dietary isoflavone intakes did not vary with clinical characteristics, including time since surgery and estrogen receptor status. 
		                        		
		                        			CONCLUSION
		                        			Breast cancer survivors were more likely to consume isoflavones than agematched cancer-free women. Dietary isoflavone intake was associated with healthy lifestyle characteristics in women both with and without breast cancer. Further research is needed to understand the role of the higher isoflavone intake among breast cancer survivors compared to cancer-free women on their prognosis.

The current 2024 guideline, developed by the Korean Society of Endometriosis (KSE), builds upon the 2018 KSE guideline. 6.Microbiological and clinical characteristics of vulvovaginitis in premenarcheal and postmenarcheal girls in a tertiary center in South Korea

		                        			 Objective:
		                        			To analyze the microbiological and clinical characteristics of vulvovaginitis in girls, distinguishing between the premenarcheal and postmenarcheal groups in a tertiary center in South Korea. 
		                        		
		                        			Methods:
		                        			This retrospective cohort study included 195 patients under 20 years of age diagnosed with vulvovaginitis at a tertiary hospital between 2014 and 2023. The patients were categorized into premenarcheal (n=95) and postmenarcheal (n=100) groups. Data on initial symptoms, microbial cultures, and treatment methods were analyzed. 
		                        		
		                        			Results:
		                        			The most common initial symptom was vaginal discharge, reported in 63.1% of cases. Culture results showed a 51.3% positivity rate for any microorganism, with a prevalence of gram-negative rods (32.8%) and gram-positive cocci (14.4%). The most frequently isolated microorganisms were Escherichia coli (17.9%), Candida albicans (7.7%), and Enterococcus faecalis (6.7%). Gram-negative rods were more common in the premenarcheal group (37.1% vs. 25.0%; p=0.01). No significant differences were observed in the prevalence of gram-positive cocci and Candida species between the two groups (16.8% vs. 12.0%, p=0.22; 6.3% vs. 13.0%, p=0.09; respectively). The susceptibilities of grampositive microorganisms to penicillin, oxacillin, clindamycin, vancomycin, and tetracycline were 58.8%, 58.3%, 94.7%, 100.0%, and 73.7%, respectively. The susceptibilities of gram-negative microorganisms to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, and nitrofurantoin were 89.3%, 85.3%, 76.0%, and 100.0%, respectively. 
		                        		
		                        			Conclusion
		                        			This study identified differences in the microbial profiles associated with vulvovaginitis between premenarcheal and postmenarcheal girls. Age-specific and history-based clinical approaches tailored to menarcheal status are warranted to improve the management and outcomes of pediatric and adolescent vulvovaginitis.
