4.A nationwide survey on the curriculum and educational resources related to the Clinical Skills Test of the Korean Medical Licensing Examination: a cross-sectional descriptive study

Purpose:
The revised Clinical Skills Test (CST) of the Korean Medical Licensing Exam aims to provide a better assessment of physicians’ clinical competence and ability to interact with patients. This study examined the impact of the revised CST on medical education curricula and resources nationwide, while also identifying areas for improvement within the revised CST.
Methods:
This study surveyed faculty responsible for clinical clerkships at 40 medical schools throughout Korea to evaluate the status and changes in clinical skills education, assessment, and resources related to the CST. The researchers distributed the survey via email through regional consortia between December 7, 2023 and January 19, 2024.
Results:
Nearly all schools implemented preliminary student–patient encounters during core clinical rotations. Schools primarily conducted clinical skills assessments in the third and fourth years, with a simplified form introduced in the first and second years. Remedial education was conducted through various methods, including one-on-one feedback from faculty after the assessment. All schools established clinical skills centers and made ongoing improvements. Faculty members did not perceive the CST revisions as significantly altering clinical clerkship or skills assessments. They suggested several improvements, including assessing patient records to improve accuracy and increasing the objectivity of standardized patient assessments to ensure fairness.
Conclusion
During the CST, students’ involvement in patient encounters and clinical skills education increased, improving the assessment and feedback processes for clinical skills within the curriculum. To enhance students’ clinical competencies and readiness, strengthening the validity and reliability of the CST is essential.

Tinea capitis is an infection of the scalp hair follicles and surrounding skin that primarily occurs in prepubertal children. Microsporum canis remains the most common pathogen causing tinea capitis in Asian countries, including South Korea, although the causative organism of this condition varies across geographical regions and time periods. Systemic antifungal agents are the mainstay treatments for tinea capitis; however, the therapeutic responses to antifungal drugs may vary depending on the causative species, and treatment failure may occur owing to drug resistance. Although dermatophytosis resistant to clinical treatment have been increasingly encountered, recalcitrant tinea capitis cases have rarely been reported. Herein, we report three cases of tinea capitis caused by M. canis in children. All three patients showed unsatisfactory clinical responses to prolonged courses of oral terbinafine or itraconazole without achieving mycological cure; however, they were successfully treated with oral griseofulvin. Although griseofulvin is not currently available or licensed for use in many countries, including South Korea, it is one of the most effective agents against Microsporum species and remains the most widely used first-line treatment for tinea capitis in children, based on dermatology textbooks and reliable treatment guidelines.
10.Classification of Mouse Lung Metastatic Tumor with Deep Learning

Traditionally, pathologists microscopically examine tissue sections to detect pathological lesions; the many slides that must be evaluated impose severe work burdens. Also, diagnostic accuracy varies by pathologist training and experience; better diagnostic tools are required. Given the rapid development of computer vision, automated deep learning is now used to classify microscopic images, including medical images. Here, we used a Inception-v3 deep learning model to detect mouse lung metastatic tumors via whole slide imaging (WSI); we cropped the images to 151 by 151 pixels. The images were divided into training (53.8%) and test (46.2%) sets (21,017 and 18,016 images, respectively). When images from lung tissue containing tumor tissues were evaluated, the model accuracy was 98.76%. When images from normal lung tissue were evaluated, the model accuracy (“no tumor”) was 99.87%. Thus, the deep learning model distinguished metastatic lesions from normal lung tissue. Our approach will allow the rapid and accurate analysis of various tissues.
