BACKGROUND:Titanium implants are widely used in clinical practice because of their high strength and good biocompatibility. However, during implantation, bacterial infection and tissue damage environment produce a large number of reactive oxygen species, which can easily lead to delayed tissue healing and surgical failure.Consequently, the development of titanium implants with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties becomes paramount. OBJECTIVE:Considering the potent antimicrobial attributes of copper ions and the remarkable antioxidant qualities of polyphenols,we proposed the fabrication of polyphenol-mediated copper ion coatings on titanium surfaces. These coatings were subsequently assessed for their in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. METHODS:Nanostructures were generated on the titanium surface using the alkali thermal method. The titanium was immersed in a solution containing tannic acid and copper ions to achieve polyphenol-mediated copper ion coatings. The surface morphology and water contact angle were detected. The loading and release of copper ions were examined using atomic absorption spectroscopy.Staphylococcus aureus was inoculated on the surface of pure titanium sheet(blank group),alkali heat treated titanium sheet(control group),and polyphenol mediated copper ion modified titanium sheet(experimental group)to observe the bacterial survival status.Osteoblast precursor cells MC3T3-E1 were co-cultivated on the surface of three groups of titanium sheets to assess their antioxidant properties and bioactivity. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)Scanning electron microscopy showed that the polyphenol-mediated copper ion modified titanium sheet had rod-like nanostructures and no cracks on the surface. The surface hydrophilicity of copper ion modified titanium sheet mediated by polyphenol was close to that of pure titanium sheet.Atomic absorption spectrometry results showed a 51%increase in the loading capacity of copper ions after polyphenol mediation, with a uniform release of copper ions.(2)The antibacterial rates of titanium sheets in the blank group, control group, and experimental group were 0%,21.65%,and 93.75%,respectively.The live/dead staining and CTC staining showed that the live bacteria on the surface of titanium plates in the blank group were the most, and the live bacteria on the surface of titanium plates in the experimental group were the least.(3)The results of live/dead staining and CCK-8 assay showed that the three groups of titanium sheets had good cytocompatibility, and the titanium sheets in the experimental group were more conducive to the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells.Active oxygen fluorescence probe detection exhibited that compared with the other two groups, the fluorescence intensity of active oxygen on the surface of the experimental group was significantly reduced. The results of alkaline phosphatase and alizarin red S staining showed that the osteogenic differentiation and extracellular matrix mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells on the surface of titanium sheets in the experimental group were stronger than those in the other two groups.(4)These results show that the polyphenol-mediated copper ion coating has strong antibacterial and antioxidant properties and promotes osteogenic differentiation.

ObjectiveTo investigate the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) in the spatial pattern of Pseudostellaria heterophylla production regions and reveal the impact of statistical scales on the spatial distribution characteristics of this medicinal plant species. MethodsUsing multi-source data (literature records, field surveys, and statistical data), we systematically analyzed the spatial patterns across three administrative levels (provincial, prefectural, and county scales). Spatial autocorrelation (Moran's I) analysis, high-low clustering (Getis-Ord General G), and hot/cold spot analysis (Getis-Ord Gi*) were employed. ResultsThe literature-based analysis showed that the production regions of P. heterophylla presented random distribution on the provincial scale and significant aggregation on the prefectural scale. The field survey data showed that the production regions displayed random distribution on the provincial scale but significant aggregation on both prefectural and county scales. The statistical data revealed that the production regions lacked spatial autocorrelation on the provincial scale but demonstrated significant aggregation on prefectural and county scales. ConclusionMAUP effects have substantive implications for understanding and decision-making in the arrangement of medicinal plant production regions. The county scale proves to be the most sensitive and explanatory level for analyzing the spatial pattern of P. heterophylla production regions, providing a critical foundation for habitat modeling, suitability evaluation, and ecological cultivation planning of medicinal plants.

BACKGROUND:As a member of bone morphogenetic proteins, growth differentiation factor-5 shows promising potential in the application of cartilage and bone repair. The affinity of growth differentiation factor-5 onto bone tissue determines protein use efficiency,so it is of great significance to prepare growth differentiation factor-5 with bone targeting capability. OBJECTIVE:To modify growth differentiation factor-5 using bisphosphonates and investigate the effects of modified protein on the growth of preosteoblasts in mice. METHODS:Pamidronate disodium/growth differentiation factor-5 complex was prepared using chemical crosslinking to couple growth differentiation factor-5 with pamidronate disodium. The functional groups and structures of the complex were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichromatography. To determine the bone targeting in vitro, the binding of the modified growth differentiation factor-5 with calcium phosphate and in vitro release amount of growth differentiation factor-5 were measured with an ELISA kit.Growth differentiation factor-5(control group)and the pamidronate disodium/growth differentiation factor-5 complex(experimental group)were co-cultured with preosteoblasts MC3T3-E1.Individually cultured cells were blank controls. The effect of the complex on cell proliferation and differentiation was evaluated. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)The infrared spectroscopy and circular dichromatography results indicated that the bisphosphonate/growth differentiation factor-5 complex was successfully prepared without significant changes in the protein secondary structure. In vitro protein adsorption results showed that growth differentiation factor-5 adsorption on calcium phosphate was increased by about one time after coupling with a bisphosphonate. In the presence of cysteine, growth differentiation factor-5 could be released from the bisphosphonate/growth differentiation factor-5 complex.(2)CCK-8 assay results showed that the absorbance value of the experimental group cultured for 4 and 7 days was higher than that of the control group and blank control group(P<0.000 1).After 7 days of culture, the expression of alkaline phosphatase in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group and blank control group(P<0.000 1).After 13 days of culture, the content of calcium nodules in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group and the blank control group(P<0.000 1).The results of qRT-PCR showed that the mRNA expression of alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin and Runx2 in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group and the blank control group after 7 days of culture(P<0.01,P<0.001,P<0.000 1).(3)These findings exhibit that bisphosphonate modification can enhance the binding capacity of growth differentiation factor-5 to calcium phosphate as well as improve its biological activity.

Objective:To compare the therapeutic efficacy between femoral neck system (FNS) and cannulated compression screws (CCS) in the fixation of femoral neck fractures in the elderly patients aged 65 to 75 years old. Methods:A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the data of 39 patients aged 65 to 75 years old who had been treated for femoral neck fractures at Department of Trauma Surgery, Hospital Affiliated to Qingdao University from January 2015 to September 2022. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to their internal fixation methods. In the FNS group of 18 cases subjected to FNS fixation, there were 8 male and 10 females with an age of (71.1±2.8) years. In the CCS group of 21 cases subjected to CCS fixation, there were 7 males and 14 females with an age of (70.1±2.9) years. The 2 groups were compared in terms of intraoperative fluoroscopy frequency, surgical time, intraoperative bleeding, hospitalization costs, fracture healing time, internal fixation failure, and Harris hip score, changes in neck shaft angle, and femoral neck shortening at 1 year after surgery. Results:The differences were not statistically significant in the preoperative general data or follow-up time between the 2 groups, indicating comparability ( P>0.05). In the FNS group, the intraoperative fluoroscopy frequency [(15.1±2.3) times] was significantly lower than that in the CCS group [(19.5±3.5) times], the surgical time [(49.2±5.2) minutes] was significantly shorter than that in CCS group [(62.4±11.2) minutes], and the intraoperative bleeding [(74.2±15.6) mL] and hospitalization costs [(39,928.7±1,438.3) yuan] were significantly higher than those in the CCS group [(53.1±17.3) mL and (23,527.9±2,126.3) yuan] (all P<0.05). The difference in fracture healing time was not statistically significant between the 2 groups ( P>0.05). In the FNS group, the decreased neck shaft angle (2.65°±1.66°) and femoral neck shortening (3.9±1.3 mm) were significantly smaller than those in the CCS group [4.18°±2.13° and (6.3±2.5) mm] at 1 year after surgery, and the Harris hip score [(82.2±7.2) points] was significantly higher than that in the CCS group [(76.4±5.9) points] (all P<0.05). Internal fixation failure occurred in 1 case in the FNS group and in 4 cases in the CCS group, respectively, showing no statistically significant difference ( P>0.05). Conclusions:Compared with CCS fixation, FNS fixation may lead to better therapeutic efficacy in patients with femoral neck fracture aged 65 to 75 years old. However, the risk of internal fixation failure should also be taken into consideration.

Cognitive disorders refer to diseases that affect an individual's thinking, memory, learning, and understanding abilities. Common cognitive disorders include Alzheimer's disease, vascular cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. The pathogenesis of these diseases may involve neuroplasticity (especially synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitters changes, and neurotrophic factor levels), neuroinflammation, cerebral hemodynamics, and brain electrical rhythms; however, treatments have not yet made significant breakthroughs. Low-intensity transcranial ultrasound stimulation (LITUS) is an emerging non-invasive therapeutic approach that improves cognitive function by stimulating specific brain regions with low-intensity ultrasound waves, thereby regulating neuronal activity. While LITUS has shown promising efficacy in treating cognitive disorders, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This paper focuses on the relation of LITUS with synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitter release, neurotrophic factor regulation, neuroinflammatory response, cerebral hemodynamic regulation, and cerebral electrical rhythm regulation, aiming to provide new ideas for treatment of cognitive disorders.

Objective:To compare the short-term efficacy between proximal femoral bionic nails (PFBN) and 3G Gamma nails in the fixation intertrochanteric femoral fractures in the elderly. Methods:A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the data of 78 elderly patients with intertrochanteric femoral fracture who had been admitted to Department of Trauma Surgery, The Hospital Affiliated to Qingdao University from October 2021 to December 2022. There were 35 males and 43 females with an age of (76.0±7.9) years. By Evans classification: 6 cases of type Ⅰ, 21 cases of type Ⅱ, 24 cases of type Ⅲ, 23 cases of type Ⅳ, and 4 cases of type Ⅴ. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to their internal fixation methods: a PFBN group of 35 patients fixed by PFBN and a Gamma group of 43 cases fixed with 3D Gamma nails. The time from injury to operation, hospital stay, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, weight-bearing time, fracture healing time, and Harris hip score, visual analogue scale (VAS) and incidence of complications at 6 months after operation were compared between the 2 groups. Results:There was no significant difference in the preoperative general data between the 2 groups, showing comparability ( P>0.05). All patients were followed up for (14.0±4.0) months. There were no significant differences between the PFBN and Gamma groups in operation time [(58.9±8.2) min versus (58.1±6.8) min], intraoperative blood loss [(138.0±24.9) mL versus(126.8±25.7) mL], hospital stay [(10.9±2.9) d versus (10.3±4.0) d],fracture healing time [(5.0±1.3) months versus (5.1±1.3) months], or good and excellent rate by the Harris hip score [82.9% (29/35) versus 76.7% (33/43)], VAS score [0(0, 1) points versus 1(0, 1) points], or incidence of complications at 6 months after operation [2.9% (1/35) versus 4.7% (2/43)] (all P>0.05). However, the complete weight-bearing time for the PFBN group was (5.3±1.2) weeks, significantly earlier than that for the Gamma group [(6.9±1.4) weeks] ( P<0.05). Conclusion:In the fixation of intertrochanteric femoral fractures in the elderly patients, both PFBN and 3D Gamma nails can achieve satisfactory short-term efficacy, but PFBN is more beneficial to the functional recovery of the hip joint because it leads to earlier complete weight-bearing time than 3D Gamma nails.

Objective:To understand the current status of pubertal sexual characteristics development of girls aged 6-18 years in Tongzhou District of Beijing and to compare the differences in sexual characteristics development among girls characterized as thin, normal, overweight, and obese. Methods:A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2 844 girls aged 6-18 years in Tongzhou District of Beijing from September 2022 to July 2023. The developmental stages of breast and pubic hair were assessed on site, and menarche status was inquired. Weight and height were measured. The girls were subsequently characterized into thin, normal, overweight and obese groups. Basic information (including family and personal history) was obtained through questionnaires. Probit probability unit regression was applied to calculate the age of each Tanner stage of sexual characteristics development and the age of menarche. The χ 2 test was applied to compare the counting data between two or multiple groups. Results:A total of 2 844 girls were surveyed and 2 704 girls met the inclusion criteria, resulting in a valid response rate of 95.1%. Among these girls, 1 105 (40.9%) were aged 6-9 years, 1 053 (38.9%) were aged 10-13 years, and 546 (20.2%) were aged 14-18 years. The of height-for-age Z-score (HAZ), weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ), and body mass index-for-age Z-score (BAZ) were 0.46(-0.23,1.16), 0.69(-0.16,1.67), and 0.67(-0.27,1.73) respectively. The prevalences of thin, overweight, and obesity were respectively 1.7% (45/2 704), 17.3% (467/2 704), and 19.9% (538/2 704), respectively. There were 45 girls in the thin group, 1 654 girls in the normal weight group, 1 005 girls in the overweight and obesity group. The age of Tanner stage breast 2 (B2), Tanner stage pubic hair 2 (P2), and menarche was 9.0 (95% CI 8.9-9.1), 10.5 (95% CI 10.4-10.6), and 11.4 (95% CI 11.3-1.5) years, respectively. The current status of breast and pubic hair maturity in girls with pubertal development shows that 64.6% (1 211/1 874) of these girls had breast development preceding pubic hair development, 32.4% (607/1 874) had concurrent breast and pubic hair development, and 3.0% (56/1 874) had pubic hairs development preceding breast development. The interval age between B2 and B5 was 4.7 (95% CI 4.6-4.8) years, between P2 and P5 was 4.5 (95% CI 4.4-4.6) years, and between B2 and menarche was 2.4 (95% CI 2.3-2.5) years. The ages of sexual characteristics development in overweight and obese groups were earlier than that in normal and thin groups. The ages of B2 in thin, normal, overweight, and obese groups were 10.0 (95% CI 9.5-10.6), 9.3 (95% CI 9.2-9.4), and 8.6 (95% CI 8.4-8.7) years, respectively. The age of menarche in thin, normal, overweight, and obese groups were 13.1 (95% CI 12.4-13.7), 11.6 (95% CI 11.4-11.7), and 11.1 (95% CI 11.0-11.2) years, respectively. The interval ages between B2 and B5 and between P2 and P5 was 4.5 and 4.1 years, respectively in the overweight and obese groups, and those in normal group and thin group was 4.7 and 4.5 years, 4.6 and 4.7 years, respectively. Conclusions:The ages of sexual characteristics development and menarche tend in Tongzhou District of Beijing to be earlier than that being reported of Beijing's survey 20 years ago. Girls characterized as overweight and obese not only start puberty at an earlier age than girls of normal weight, but also have a shorter developmental process.

Periarticular fracture of the shoulder is a common type of fractures in the elderly. Postoperative adverse events such as internal fixation failure, humeral head ischemic necrosis and upper limb dysfunction occur frequently, which seriously endangers the exercise and health of the elderly. Compared with the fracture with normal bone mass, the osteoporotic periarticular fracture of the shoulder is complicated with slow healing and poor rehabilitation, so the clinical management becomes more difficult. At present, there is no targeted guideline or consensus for this type of fracture in China. In such context, experts from Youth Osteoporosis Group of Chinese Orthopedic Association, Orthopedic Expert Committee of Geriatrics Branch of Chinese Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Osteoporosis Group of Youth Committee of Chinese Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and Osteoporosis Committee of Shanghai Association of Chinese Integrative Medicine developed the Chinese expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporotic periarticular fracture of the shoulder in the elderly ( version 2023). Nine recommendations were put forward from the aspects of diagnosis, treatment strategies and rehabilitation of osteoporotic periarticular fracture of the shoulder, hoping to promote the standardized, systematic and personalized diagnosis and treatment concept and improve functional outcomes and quality of life in elderly patients with osteoporotic periarticular fracture of the shoulder.
