1.Vascular Anomaly in an Orthodontic Patient – A Case Report
International e-Journal of Science, Medicine and Education 2025;19(1):71-74
Separation of vascular lesions into one of the two groups, namely, hemangioma and vascular malformations can be of considerable significance relative to the treatment of patients. They pose serious bleeding risks. A case report is presented here where a patient with a vascular malformation is treated with fixed orthodontic appliances. A coordinated, interdisciplinary approach can result in enhanced patient satisfaction and successful treatment outcomes.

Acta Medica Philippina 2025;59(12):52-59
BACKGROUND
Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are a common part of Filipino meals. Increased SSB consumption is linked to weight gain and increased risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Previous studies have shown that health literacy (HL) is associated with positive health outcomes. However, there are limited studies examining its relationship with specific dietary behavior, including SSB consumption.
OBJECTIVEThe study aims to investigate the association between HL and SSB consumption among Filipinos aged 15 to 70 years.
METHODSAn analytic cross-sectional study using secondary data from the 2018-2019 National Health Literacy Survey (NHLS) was conducted. A total of 1,765 study participants (15 to 70 years old) were included. Socio-demographic information, daily SSB consumption (33 was considered "sufficient." Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to estimate adjusted odds ratios and confidence intervals for daily SSB consumption.
RESULTSOut of the 1,765 study participants, 64.14% reported consuming (≥1 SSB drink per day, of whom majority (57.52%) were adults (31 to 59 years old), females (72.21%), married or in common-law partnership (65.70%), living in the Luzon region (47.23%), urban residents (71.94%), high school graduates (30.52%), have an annual household income of PhP 100,000–249,999 (37.03%), and employed (92.61%). Among those consuming ≥1 SSB drink per day, 51.89% had limited HL. Age, sex, and subnational level (National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao) were found to be significantly associated with the consumption of ≥1 SSB drink(s) per day. A weak association was found between HL and SSB consumption (aOR: 0.9591; 95% CI: 0.7832, 1.1747), that is, the adjusted odds of having limited HL were found to be slightly lower among those consuming ≥1 SSB drink(s) per day than those who consume
There was a high prevalence of daily SSB consumption among Filipinos. Among the variables considered, only age, sex, and subnational level were found to be significant determinants of SSB consumption. The findings of the study may provide valuable insights for targeted health promotion and education interventions in reducing SSB consumption among Filipinos such as workplace wellness programs, nutrition education, and the provision of healthier beverage alternatives. Priority should be given to younger individuals, males, and residents of the National Capital Region. This research also fills a gap in the literature regarding the role of HL in SSB consumption within the Philippine context. Findings of this study support adopting the Health Literacy Universal Precautions to ensure accessible health information and services for all, regardless of HL level.

Journal of the Philippine Dermatological Society 2024;33(Suppl 1):30-30
Vascular malformations are aberrant proliferations of blood vessels that may present at birth or develop subsequently. Capillary malformations (CMs) represent the most common category of vascular malformations. They generally present as localized discoloration, including port-wine stains (PWSs) and telangiectasia. Certain PWSs, especially those affecting the V2 dermatome, may give rise to pyogenic granulomas or other epithelial or mesenchymal hamartomas.
We present a case of a 46-year-old male with a 5-year history of a solitary, progressively enlarging firm papule on an erythematous patch or “birthmark” on his left cheek. Despite infrequent manipulation, there were no reports of bleeding or any associated symptoms, including pain, pruritus, and thrills. The patient sought consultation for cosmetic reasons and wanted to have the lesion removed. Hence, an excision biopsy revealed a well-defined proliferation of mature thick and thin-walled vessels, lined by a single layer of endothelial cells, surrounded by dysmorphic and irregularly arranged vessels consistent with arteriovenous malformation with capillary malformation.
Capillary malformation (CM) is the most common form of vascular malformation. Fifty percent of port-wine stains (PWSs), which is the most common (CM) in children, are in the face area innervated by the second branch of the trigeminal nerve. Arteriovenous malformations manifest in the advanced stages of PWSs and, alongside pyogenic granuloma, represent underreported histological changes inside mature PWSs, especially in the face area innervated by the second branch of the trigeminal nerve (V2).

Six compounds were isolated from aqueous extract of wine-processed Corni Fructus through silica gel, ODS column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 gel column chromatography, reverse phase preparative HPLC and other chromatographic separation technologies. Their structures were identified with multiple spectroscopical methods including HR-ESI-MS, UV, IR, NMR and ECD and so on. Their structures were established as pinoresinoside B(1), cornusgallicacid A(2),(+)-isolariciresinol-9'-O-β-glucopyranoside(3),(-)-isolariciresinol 3α-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(4),(7R,8S)-dihydrodehydrodiconiferyl alcohol 9-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(5), and(-)-seco isolariciresinol-9'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(6). Among them, compounds 1 and 2 were two new compounds. The biological activity evaluation results showed that compounds 2 and 6 had strong DPPH free radical scavenging ability, with EC_(50) values of(4.18±1.96) and(21.45±1.19) μmol·L~(-1), respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 had protective effects on H_2O_2-induced oxidative damage in NRK-52E cells in a dose-dependent manner, and the cell survival rate of compound 2 at 100 μmol·L~(-1) was 96.09%±1.77%.

Objective To investigate the immunomodulatory effect of mare's milk on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) mice. Methods Kunming mice were randomly divided into a blank group(0.8 mL/day saline by gavage) and a DSS modeling group. After modeling, the DSS modeling group was further divided into a control group (0.8 mL/day saline), a salazosulfapyridine (SASP) treated group(430 mg/(kg.d)) and a mare's milk group(0.8 mL/day), with 16 mice in each group. After 10 days of gavage administration, HE staining was performed to observe colonic inflammation, and the disease activity index (DAI) and colonic mucosal damage index (CMDI) were scored. ELISA was used to determine the levels of interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and IL-10 in mouse colonic tissues, and flow cytometry was used to detect the percentages of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes in peripheral blood. Results Compared to the blank group, all indexes in mice of the control group indicated that DSS successfully induced UC. Compared to the control group, colon shortening in UC mice was attenuated in the mare's milk group; inflammation and ulcer formation in colonic tissues were inhibited; DAI and CMDI scores were lowere; IL-1β and IL-6 levels in mouse colonic tissues were significantly reduced; IL-10 levels were increased and the CD4+/CD8+ T cell ratio was reduced. Conclusion Mare's milk can inhibit the inflammation of DSS-induced UC mice through immune regulation.

Chinese Journal of Pediatrics 2023;61(10):917-921
Objective: To investigate the natural history and risk factors for continued allergy in infants with IgE-mediated cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). Methods: This was a prospective cohort study that included 72 infants under 24 months of age diagnosed with IgE-mediated CMPA in the allergy clinic of the Children's Hospital, Capital Institute of Pediatrics from October 2019 to November 2020. General information, clinical manifestations, serum total IgE, cow's milk specific IgE, and cow's milk protein component specific IgE were collected. Follow-ups were conducted at 24 and 36 months of age, and the patients were divided into the persistent allergy group and the tolerance group based on whether they developed cow's milk tolerance at 36 months of age. Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, and binary Logistic regression were used for intergroup comparison and multivariate analysis. Results: Among the 72 CMPA children, there were 42 boys and 30 girls, with an age of 10 (7, 15) months at enrollment. Cow's milk protein tolerance was observed in 32 cases (44%) and 46 cases (64%) at 24 and 36 months of age, respectively. There were 26 cases in the persistent allergy group and 46 cases in the tolerance group. The proportion of respiratory symptoms, history of wheezing, positive specific IgE for α-lactalbumin and the total IgE level in the persistent allergy group were higher than that in the tolerance group (7 cases (27%) vs. 0, 6 cases (23%) vs. 2 cases (4%), 67% (14/21) vs. 26% (10/39), 225 (151, 616) vs. 48 (21, 185) kU/L, χ2=10.82, 4.16, 9.57, Z=4.07, all P<0.05). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that anaphylaxis (OR=21.14, 95%CI 2.55-175.14, P=0.005), a history of allergic rhinitis (OR=5.94, 95%CI 1.54-22.86, P=0.005), elevated milk specific IgE (OR=1.04, 95%CI 1.01-1.08, P=0.024), and positive casein specific IgE (OR=6.64, 95%CI 1.39-31.69, P=0.018) were risk factors for continuous CMPA. Conclusions: Most infants with IgE-mediated CMPA can achieve tolerance within 3 years. Anaphylaxis, a history of allergic rhinitis, elevated milk specific IgE levels, and casein sensitization are risk factors for continuous allergy.

Chinese Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics 2023;25(3):278-283
OBJECTIVES:
To study the effect of breastfeeding on immune function in infants with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection.
METHODS:
A retrospective analysis was performed on the medical data of 135 infants with HCMV infection who were admitted to Children's Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University from January 2021 to May 2022, and all these infants received breastfeeding. According to the results of breast milk HCMV-DNA testing, the infants were divided into two groups: breast milk HCMV positive (n=78) and breast milk HCMV negative (n=57). According to the median breast milk HCMV-DNA load, the infants in the breast milk HCMV positive group were further divided into two subgroups: high viral load and low viral load (n=39 each). Related indicators were compared between the breast milk positive and negative HCMV groups and between the breast milk high viral load and low viral load subgroups, including the percentages of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets (CD3+ T cells, CD3+CD4+ T cells, CD3+CD8+ T cells, and CD19+ B cells), CD4+/CD8+ ratio, IgG, IgM, IgA, and urine HCMV-DNA load.
RESULTS:
There were no significant differences in the percentages of CD3+ T cells, CD3+CD4+ T cells, CD3+CD8+ T cells, and CD19+ B cells, CD4+/CD8+ ratio, IgG, IgM, IgA, and urine HCMV-DNA load between the breast milk HCMV positive and HCMV negative groups, as well as between the breast milk high viral load and low viral load subgroups (P>0.05).
