BACKGROUND
Aging is an inevitable aspect of life, and to create a plan for healthy aging, it is crucial to determine the prevalence of geriatric syndromes. This information is essential to reduce morbidity and mortality and to develop tailored intervention programs.
OBJECTIVETo determine the clinical utility of the 10-minute Geriatric Screener as a screening tool at the Outpatient Department in Southern Philippines Medical Center; and to determine the prevalence of geriatric syndrome and its associated risk factors.
METHODSProspective cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted in the Southern Philippines Medical Center Outpatient Department. This study evaluated 170 geriatric patients at the Southern Philippines Medical Center.
RESULTSThere were 110 cases (164.71%) classified as a low-risk level and 60 (35.29%) as high-risk. Sex does not significantly dictate a pattern of geriatric syndrome classification (X2=0.006; p=0.936). However, a marginal significance was seen for civil status, where widowed patients have a high risk of geriatric syndrome (X2=7.506; p=0.057). Patients with a high risk of geriatric syndrome are significantly older (69+5.91 vs. 65+.98; t=4.014; pCONCLUSION
Those patients aged more than 70 years old, widowed, visually impaired, and with physical disability will more likely be classified as high-risk geriatric syndrome. These findings underscore the complex interplay of age and specific health conditions in determining risk profiles, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and further investigation into the nuanced factors influencing health risks in similar populations.

4.Aging parameters of the accelerated aging procedure through D-Galactose induction

Background and Objectives:
Intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of D-galactose (D-gal) accelerates aging and develops aging models. A low dose of long-term use and a high dose of short-term use of D-gal can induce natural aging in mice, like brain, cardiac, liver, renal, and skin aging, and erectile dysfunction. Our research aims to determine whether a high dose of short-term use of D-gal. i.p. in rats can induce natural aging and affect the following parameters: body weight (BW), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), C-reactive protein (CRP), and myostatin.
Methods:
A daily D-gal i.p. dose of 300 mg/ml/kg for seven days was carried out to induce aging parameters in the rats. After seven days, the body and gastrocnemius circumference of the rats were weighed, and biochemical analysis for SOD, VEGF, CRP, and myostatin in the blood plasma was done.
Results:
The data obtained were analyzed using nonparametric statistics Friedman test and Mann-Whitney test. After the seven day-intervention, both the control (NaCl 0.9% i.p.) and the high dose of short-term use of D-gal i.p. groups showed no significant difference in the body weight and gastrocnemius circumference. However, D-gal administration could increase the blood plasma level of SOD, VEGF, CRP, and myostatin.
Conclusion
We conclude that a high dose of short-term intraperitoneal D-galactose can be administrated to induce aging in rat models. The SOD, VEGF, CRP and myostatin can be used as aging parameters.

5.Medical and social domains of ageing research in Singapore (2008-2018): a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION:
This scoping review examined the number, types and characteristics of journal publications on ageing in Singapore from 2008 to 2018 to determine how ageing research in medical and social domains in Singapore has transformed over time.
METHODS:
Using relevant search terms, articles were extracted from multiple databases and then screened and reviewed for eligibility and inclusion by independent reviewers. Data such as article title, authors, year of publication, name of journal, type of journal, study design and the kind of data used were charted from the included articles for evidence synthesis.
RESULTS:
Since 2008, there has been a steady increase in the number of publications on ageing in medical and social domains in Singapore. In the medical domain, publications on Ophthalmology (22%) made up the largest proportion of the existing medical literature on ageing in Singapore, followed by Physical Functioning (17%), which involved physiological measurements of physical well-being, and Geriatrics (16%). Non-medical publications comprised 38% of all the included publications, with publications on the social aspects of ageing (43%) forming the largest group in this cluster, followed by publications on Prevention (19%) and Healthcare services (18%). The study design was mostly observational (82%), with only 3% of interventional studies.
CONCLUSION
While ageing research had expanded in Singapore in the last decade, it was predominantly discipline specific and observational in design. As ageing issues are complex, with biology intersecting with psychology and sociology, we call for greater interdisciplinary collaboration, the conduct of more interventional studies, as well as more research in understudied and emerging areas.

6.Effect of Garcinia binucao crude leaf extract supplementation on lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster chronically exposed to alcohol

Background:
Consumption and abuse of alcohol remains a significant cause of concern worldwide. Furthermore, there is evidence of the association between chronic alcohol use and reduced life expectancy.
Objectives:
To study the effects of Garcinia binucao extract (GBE) supplementation on lifespan of Drosophila
melanogaster, in the presence or absence of chronic alcohol exposure.
Methods:
D. melanogaster was mass cultured and given GBE supplementation in high (1 mg/mL) and low (200 µg/mL) sublethal doses. D. melanogaster flies were divided into groups - with and without chronic alcohol exposure, and their respective lifespans were monitored.
Results:
In D. melanogaster without alcohol exposure, mean lifespan was highest in the control flies (38.15 days), followed by high-dose GBE (34.42 days), low-dose GBE (33.24 days), and DMSO (22.29 days). In D. melanogaster chronically exposed to alcohol, the longest mean lifespan was observed in flies treated with high-dose GBE (33.80 days), followed by low-dose GBE (33.63 days), the DMSO group (30.30), and the control group (29.65 days), but the differences were not statistically significant. Comparing groups with and without chronic alcohol exposure, the mean lifespan of the control group chronically exposed to alcohol significantly decreased by 9.51 days (p < 0.05). In GBE treatment groups, mean lifespan significantly decreased by 0.82 days in high-dose set-up (p < 0.05), and significantly increased by 0.39 days in the low-dose set-up (p < 0.05) upon chronic alcohol exposure.
Conclusion
Garcinia binucao extract supplementation ameliorated the observed reduction in lifespan of Drosophila melanogaster chronically exposed to alcohol.

7.Predictors of cognitive impairment among Filipino patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a tertiary government hospital.

BACKGROUND
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients are predisposed to cognitive decline and dementia. The cooccurrence of the two diseases translate to a higher medical cost. Identification of factors contributing to cognitive impairment is warranted.
OBJECTIVETo determine the predictors of cognitive impairment among Filipino patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
METHODSThis is a cross-sectional analytical study involving Filipino patients diagnosed with T2DM in the outpatient clinic. A total of 171 patients were included and were screened using AD8-P tool.
RESULTSA total of 171 adult patients were included and screened for cognitive impairment.19.3% were cognitively impaired, with mean age of 59.6 years old (vs. 55.5 years old, p < 0.029), and two-thirds were female. The mean duration of the patient’s diabetes was 11.2 years. After adjusting for confounders and multi-collinearity, the duration of diabetes was significantly associated with cognitive impairment with odds of developing cognitive impairment increasing as the duration reach 10 years above. Those with T2DM for at least ten years were 2.5 times more likely to develop cognitive impairment, holding the age constant. (OR = 2.5, 95% CI – 1.0 to 5.8, p < 0.043).
CONCLUSION19.3% of Filipino patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in a tertiary government hospital are cognitively impaired and this can occur even in less than 65 years old. The ten years or longer duration of T2DM increases the risk of developing cognitive impairment by 2.5%.

8.Exploring the role of the built environment on the functional ability and social participation in community-dwelling older adults

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES
The built environment or physical environment consists of surroundings and conditions constructed by human activity. It includes urban design, neighborhoods, transportation, and smaller scale structures like the design and layout of rooms within buildings. The built environment can affect the physical, social, and functional wellbeing of older adults, both within their own homes and in the neighborhoods in which they live, and additionally plays a part in promoting healthy aging. This narrative review of the literature aims to present the ways in which the built environment can influence the functional ability of community-dwelling older adults, and affect their ability to live independently and age in place.
METHODSNarrative literature review and inductive thematic analysis.
RESULTSForty-five full-text, English language publications from peer-reviewed sources were selected for this review, with the majority (35) presenting quantitative research findings and originating from North America (28). Older adults in rural and developing countries were underrepresented in the literature, despite acknowledgement that health of the aging population is a worldwide problem. Three major themes emerged. First, the built environment affects older adults in the most fundamental way at home through design considerations, modifications, and technological advances promoting aging in place and accessibility. Secondly, built environments outside the home can affect older adults’ physical activity and overall function with regard to mobility, transportation, and activities of daily living. The majority (22 of 45 publications) focused on this theme. Finally, the built environment in neighborhoods can affect older adults’ perception of social support, their social participation, and quality of life.
CONCLUSIONAs the built environment is created by humans and can be substantially modified, it possesses considerable potential for enhancing functional ability, social participation, and overall quality of life in community-dwelling older adults. It is possible to design a better person-environment fit, promoting safety, independence, optimal health, and quality of life. In order to support healthy aging, improvements in the built environment need to be accompanied by appropriate health and social policies, systems, and services. These changes require political will, as well as material resources that may not be readily available especially in the global South. A socioecological approach with adequate resources directed to older adults’ health and healthcare is necessary in order to achieve the ultimate goal of healthy aging in this population.

10.Prevalence of geriatric syndromes among elderly patients seen in the Rizal-Tagak Family Medicine Clinic: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND
As the aging population increases, health conditions in older adults require increased attention. Geriatric syndromes are clinical conditions that do not belong to specific disease categories but are concomitantly occurring that significantly affect the functionality and quality of life of older adults. The importance of routine screening of geriatric syndromes was emphasized as this will help in identifying the current conditions and health-related problems of the elderly population in the community, and its implication to their quality of life.
OBJECTIVEThis study aimed to determine the prevalence of the geriatric syndromes among elderly patients seen in the Rizal Tagak Community Geriatrics clinic.
METHODSThis research is a cross-sectional descriptive using the locally available DOH Geriatric Screening Tool for Senior Citizens and FRAIL Index Assessment tool.
RESULTSForty-six patients were included in the study. The results of the study showed that the most prevalent geriatric syndrome is frailty (78.26%), followed by polypharmacy (73.91%), visual problems (67.40%), fall risk (56.62%), urinary incontinence (45.65%), and memory impairment (41.30%). Less prevalent geriatric syndromes were malnutrition (13.04%), depression (10.87%), physical functional incapacity (8.7%), and hearing problems (6.52%).
CONCLUSIONRoutine screening for geriatric syndromes among the elderly is very important as these conditions have serious consequences and impact on the quality of life of the older adults. Early detection of geriatric syndromes will help in implementing early and appropriate interventions to prevent further complications which will be beneficial in promoting healthy aging.
