1.Niuhuang Qingxin Pills and Active Ingredients in Prevention and Treatment of Stroke: A Review

Stroke is a neurological disease characterized by cerebral ischemia or hemorrhagic injury, leading to death and disability worldwide. At present, there is still a lack of neuroprotective drugs for the treatment of stroke. Niuhuang Qingxin pills are Chinese patent medicine recommended by guidelines and expert consensus for preventing and treating stroke. Studies have shown that Niuhuang Qingxin pills have sedative, anticonvulsant, antipyretic, and other pharmacological effects. Moreover, the main components, such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and saponins, also exhibit strong pharmacological activities which can improve stroke-induced nerve damage. Studies have confirmed that representative ingredients such as baicalin and ginsenosides can interfere with multiple pathological events, including blood-brain barrier destruction, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, apoptosis, and autophagy, and the mechanisms of the essential ingredients are related to the action on important targets such as Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), and involvement in the regulation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathways. This article summarized the research status of Niuhuang Qingxin pills and the experimental pharmacological progress of common ingredients in the prevention and treatment of stroke to provide clues for further research into Niuhuang Qingxin pills and the development of active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicines.
2.Effect of Artemisinin and Its Derivatives in Treatment of Nervous System Diseases: A Review

With the rapid development of social economy, the number of patients with nervous system diseases has increased, and the incidence of the population has a trend of younger, which has a serious impact on life health and social economy. Artemisinin is an active antimalarial component extracted and isolated from Artemisia annua, a Chinese medicinal material. Artemisinin and its derivatives, in addition to the antimalarial effect, also have anti-parasitic, anti-fungal, anti-viral, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory effects, showing a wide range of pharmacological activities. In the past five years, research on the new pharmacological effects of artemisinin and its derivatives has been deepening, and the efficacy of artemisinin and its derivatives in nervous system diseases has attracted much attention, including anti-neuroinflammation, anti-oxidative stress, maintaining the stability of the blood-brain barrier, regulating the release of neurotransmitters, repairing neuronal damage, and promoting neuronal regeneration. These pharmacological effects indicate that artemisinin and its derivatives are potentially capable of neuroprotection. By sorting out literature on the pharmacological activity of artemisinin and its derivatives in nervous system during 2019-2024, this paper systematically summarized the protective effects of artemisinin and its derivatives against nervous system diseases such as stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, neuroimmunological diseases, neuralgia, and nervous system tumors. This review is expected to provide clues and evidence for new indication expansion of artemisinin drugs, innovative drug development, and clinical treatment of nervous system diseases.
3.Mechanisms of Outdoor Air Pollution Affecting Cardiovascular Diseases: A Review

The impact of air pollution on human health has always been a research hotspot in the global health field. Outdoor air pollutants composed of multiple components can enter the human body through various pathways. Cardiovascular diseases are a group of diseases caused by outdoor air pollutants. Studies have shown that the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, arrhythmia, and heart failure, is significantly increased among people exposed to air pollution environments. Air pollutants such as fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide are closely related to the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases, and short-term and long-term exposure causes different cardiovascular risks. By reviewing the relevant research reports from 2019 to 2024, this article summarizes the epidemiological evidence of cardiovascular diseases caused by different air pollutants. It generalizes the pathways through which air pollutants accelerate the progression of cardiovascular diseases. These pathways include oxidative stress, inflammatory response, thrombosis, extracellular vesicle release, endoplasmic reticulum stress, apoptosis, endothelial dysfunction, autonomic nervous system imbalance, and their interactions. Based on the different mechanisms of air pollution on cardiovascular diseases, the article analyzes the main progress in drug intervention and summarizes the roles of various active ingredients and compound prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine in treating air pollution-related cardiovascular diseases, providing reference for the research on the mechanisms and drug interventions of air pollution-related cardiovascular diseases.
4.Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases in Diabetes Mellitus with Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Review

The complex pathophysiological mechanisms between diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases have not yet been fully elucidated, becoming one of the challenges in clinical care. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP1-RA) and sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2) are clinically used to reduce the cardiovascular risk of patients with diabetes mellitus. Traditional Chinese medicine has diverse biological activities and unique advantages in the treatment of chronic complex diseases due to its multi-component and multi-target effects. Based on recent reports, this paper reviewed the common risk factors of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases (e.g., hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation), related targets such as apolipoprotein C-Ⅲ (APOC3), S100 calcium-binding protein A8/A9 (S100A8/A9), growth/differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), and NACHT, LRR, and PYD domains-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), advanced glycation end products, insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and intestinal flora disorder. In addition, this paper summarized the research progress in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in diabetes mellitus with the active ingredients (e.g., baicalein, puerarin, curcumin, notoginsenoside, and tanshinone ⅡA), single herbal medicines (e.g., Astragali Radix, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, Cinnamomi Cortex, and Corni Fructus), and compound formulas (e.g., Buzang Tongluo Fang, Yiqi Yangyin Huoxue Fang, Shenqi Fang, Huangqisan, Danggui Buxue Tang, and Liuwei Dihuang Wan) of traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine mainly treats cardiovascular diseases in diabetes mellitus by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, ameliorating dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, protecting islet β cell function, repairing endothelial damage, inhibiting smooth muscle cell proliferation, foam cell formation, macrophage polarization, and cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, and regulating intestinal flora disorder. These processes involve insulin receptor substrate/ phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (IRS/PI3K/Akt), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α/γ (PPAR α/γ), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), adenosine 5′-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK), hypoxia-inducible factor-1-BCH domain-containing protein (HIF-1-BNIP), vascular endothelial growth factor/hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (VEGF/HIF-1α) and other signaling pathways. This review is expected to provide a theoretical basis and reference for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in diabetes mellitus with traditional Chinese medicine.
5.Physical fitness evaluation results among students in Yunnan Province in 2019

Objective:
To analyze physical fitness of students aged 6-22 years old from seven ethnic groups in Yunnan Province, and to provide reference for physical fitness intervention measures.
Methods:
The nationality, gender, grade, body shape, vital capacity, exercise quality of students were derived from the 2019 Yunnan Student Physical Health Survey Database. Comprehensive physical fitness score was calculated according to the National Student Physical Fitness Standards(revised in 2014). t test, ANOVA, and χ 2 test were used to analyze physical fitness score and level among students with different ethnic groups, gender, and school stages.
Results:
The average comprehensive score of physical fitness among students from 7 ethnic groups in Yunnan Province was (70.02±9.69), with the pass rate being 88.91%. The proportion of excellent was 0.93%, good was 17.90%, pass 70.09 %, and failed was 11.09%. Physical fitness score was highest in BMI (94.99 points), followed by 50 meter running (74.13 points), sitting forward bend (72.63 points), endurance running (70.43 points), standing long jump (67.77 points), sit ups ( 65.71 points) , 1 minute skipping rope (65.25 points), vital capacity (62.97 points), pull up (29.04 points). Physical fitness score and pass rate and evaluation level varied significantly by ethnicity and school stage( F =293.53,452.85, χ 2/ χ 2 trend =466.65, 412.57 ; 1 553.22 ,1 045.36, P <0.01).
Conclusion
The excellent rate of physical fitness among students in Yunnan Province is relatively low. Physical fitness promotion requires specific guidance and training based on ethnicity and school stage.
6.Qualitative study on post-traumatic experience of inpatients with simple maxillofacial trauma

Objective:To investigate the post-traumatic experience of inpatients with simple maxillofacial trauma, and to provide a theoretical basis for the construction of post-traumatic intervention programs.Methods:A qualitative approach was used to conduct semi-structured interviews with 17 inpatients with simple maxillofacial trauma in Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University from January to April, 2020, and Colaizzi phenomenological analysis was used to analyze the interview data.Results:The post-traumatic experience of inpatients with simple maxillofacial trauma mainly included five themes: acute impairment of maxillofacial function, change of comfort, disorder of self-image, transformation from negative psychological experience to positive psychological experience, and lack of coping resources.Conclusions:Medical staff should pay attention to the functional recovery, body image and psychological intervention of inpatients with simple maxillofacial trauma, provide more professional support, and promote the physical and mental recovery of patients.
7.Mechanisms of microRNA action in rectal cancer radiotherapy.

Preoperative neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, combined with total mesorectal excision, has become the standard treatment for advanced localized rectal cancer (RC). However, the biological complexity and heterogeneity of tumors may contribute to cancer recurrence and metastasis in patients with radiotherapy-resistant RC. The identification of factors leading to radioresistance and markers of radiosensitivity is critical to identify responsive patients and improve radiotherapy outcomes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, endogenous, and noncoding RNAs that affect various cellular and molecular targets. miRNAs have been shown to play important roles in multiple biological processes associated with RC. In this review, we summarized the signaling pathways of miRNAs, including apoptosis, autophagy, the cell cycle, DNA damage repair, proliferation, and metastasis during radiotherapy in patients with RC. Also, we evaluated the potential role of miRNAs as radiotherapeutic biomarkers for RC.

8.Observation of the efficacy of biological patch in hybrid technique for incisional herniorrhaphy: 5-year follow-up results from a single center.

OBJECTIVETo observe the safety and efficacy of biological patch (Biodesign Surgisis mesh, SIS) in hybrid technique for incisional herniorrhaphy.
METHODSClinical and follow-up data of 14 incisional hernia patients who underwent incisional herniorrhaphy with hybrid technique, using porcine small intestinal submucosa acellular matrix patch, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from January 1, 2012 to June 31, 2016 were analyzed retrospectively. This Biodesign Surgisis patch for incisional hernia is produced by the Cook company in the United States. The size of patch ranged from 9 cm × 15 cm to 20 cm × 25 cm. During operation, according to abdominal wall defect, the patch was cut to ensure the distance from its edge to the border of abdominal wall defect more than 5 cm.
RESULTSThere were four male and tenfemale patients with average age of (67.7±11.6) years and average body mass index(BMI) of (25.5±1.7) kg/m². As for operative history of these 14 cases, 7 cases had gastrointestinal tumor surgery, 2 had appendectomy, 1 had upper abdominal white line hernia repair, 1 had hysterectomy, 1 had cholecystectomy, 1 had splenectomy plus portal vein dissection, and 1 had right kidney and right ureter total resection plus partial excision of bladder wall. Ten casesdeveloped incisional infection after previous surgery. The duration of incisional hernia ranged 1 to 180 months (median, 8 months). Two cases were refractory hernia, 1 was incarcerated hernia, and 11 were reversible hernia. The locations of incisional hernia included 4 cases of right ventral wall, 1 case of left ventral wall, 2 cases of supra-umbilical incision, 4 cases of infra-umbilical midline incision, and 3 cases of peri-umbilical midline incision. There were 3 cases of middle incisional hernia, 5 cases of large incisional hernia and 6 cases of huge incisional hernia. All the patients completed operations eventlessly. The average operative time was (202.5±72.9) minutes. The average length and width of hernia ring were (10.9±4.3) cm and (9.3±3.9) cm, respectively. Clean operation was performed in 11 cases, potential contaminative operation in 2 cases and contaminative operation in 1 case. The amount of operative bleeding was (15.0±4.8) ml. The NRS pain scores within 24 hours after the operation, at POD3 and at POD7 were 5.1±0.9, 4.2±0.7 and 3.7±0.9, respectively. The time to flatus after operation was (2.5±0.9) days and the time to liquid diet was (3.8±1.2) days. No patient died during the perioperative period. The average hospitalization time was (21.5±12.0) days. Postoperative complications occurred in 8 cases, including 4 cases of fever, 8 cases of incision complications, 4 cases of abdominal infection, 4 cases of intestinal obstruction, 5 cases of effusion under patch, 2 cases of pneumonia, and 1 case of acute myocardial infarction. According to the Clavien-Dindo classification, 3 cases were grade zero, 3 cases were grade I(, 6 cases were grade II(, 1 case was grade III(, and 1 case was grade IIII(. Thirteen patients received follow-up and the average follow-up time was (33.2±12.3) (18.2-61.0) months. One patient died of cerebral infarction 38 months after operation. The chronic abdominal pain or discomfort was found in 4 cases. The recurrent incisional hernia developed in 5 cases and the average time of recurrence was (11.0±8.3) months.
CONCLUSIONSBiological patch can be used safely and effectively in hybrid technique for incisional herniorrhaphy. However, the morbidity of postoperative complication and the risk of recurrence are high. Terefore, the long-term outcome is still subject to observation.

9.Efficacy analysis of porcine small intestine submucosa-derived mesh and polypropylene mesh applied in anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia repair

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of porcine small intestine submucosa-derived (SIS) mesh and polypropylene (PP) mesh applied in anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia repair.Methods The retrospective cohort study was conducted.The clinical data of 59 patients who underwent anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia repair in the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University between January 2012 and December 2017 were collected.Of 59 patients,22 undergoing anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia repair with SIS mesh and 37 undergoing anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia repair with PP mesh were respectively allocated into the SIS group and PP group.Surgeons selected surgical procedures according to hernia ring situations of patients.Observation indicators:(l) intra-and post-operative recovery situations;(2) follow-up.Follow-up using outpatient examination and telephone interview was performed to detect long-term complications of patients including foreign body sensation or pain in abdominal wall and hernia recurrence up to May 2018.Measurement data with normal distribution were represented as (x)±s,and comparison between groups was done using t test.Measurement data with skewed distribution were described as M (range),and comparison between groups was done using Mann-Whitney U test.Comparison of count data was analyzed using the chi-square test or Fisher exact probability.Results (1) Intra-and post-operative recovery situations:patients of the SIS group and PP group underwent successfully anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia repair.There were 2,3,3,14 and 5,26,1,5 patients undergoing open Onlay repair,open Sublay repair,laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh repair,laparoscopic combined with open mesh repair in the SIS group and PP group respectively.The volume of intraoperative blood loss,cases of postoperative incisional seroma and surgical site infection were (23± 11)mL,7,5 in the SIS group and (30± 13)mL,3,1 in the PP group respectively,with statistically significant differences between groups (t=-2.238,P<0.05).(2) Follow-up:patients of the SIS group and PP group were respectively followed up for 29.3 months (6.0-66.0 months) and 31.0 months (7.0-76.0 months),with no statistically significant difference between groups (Z =-1.388,P>0.05).During the follow-up,foreign body sensation or pain in abdominal wall and hernia recurrence were detected in 6,6 patients in the SIS group and 4,2 patients in the PP group respectively,with a statistically significant difference in hernia recurrence between groups (P<0.05) and with no statistically significant difference in foreign body sensation or pain in abdominal wall between groups (P>0.05).Conclusion Compared with polypropylene mesh,anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia repair using SIS mesh has higher incidence rate of postoperative incisional seroma,surgical site infection and hernia recurrence,but fewer volume of intraoperative blood loss.
10.17β-estradiol promotes proliferation, migration and TFF1 secretion in papillary thyroid cancer K-1 cells

Objective To investigate whether 17β-estradiol (E2) can stimulate the proliferation,migration,and secretion of trefoil factor family 1 (TFF1) in papillary thyroid cancer K-1 cells and explore the molecular mechanisms.Methods ELISA was used to detect the content of TFF1 in the supernatant of K-1 cells after the treatment of E2,propylpyrazoletriol (PPT,ERα agonist) or diarylpropionitrile (DPN,ERβ agonist).The expression of ERα and ERβ in the untreated cells was measured by Western blotting.ERα siRNA and ERβ siRNA by RNA interference were designed and synthesized,and the change of TFF1 was measured by ELISA again after the transfection.The interaction between TFF1 promoter and ER was evaluated by chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis (CHiP).The proliferation and migration were detected in the K-1 cells after E2 treatment by MTT assay and Transwell chamber test respectively.Festults After E2 treatment,the TFF1 content in the supernatant of K-1 cells was increased gradually,reached peak at 24 h,and then declined slowly.PPT treatment enhanced the secretion of TFF1 but DPN decreased it in the K-1 cells.Transfection of ERα siRNA obliterated the inductive effect of E2 on the secretion of TFF1,but that of ERβ siRNA increased the inductive effect in the K-1 cells.Western blotting showed that the expression level of ERα was higher than that of ERβ in the K-1 cells.ChIP results confirmed that ERα protein was bound to the promoter of TFF1 gene in K-1 cells.E2 treatment promoted cell proliferation and improved cell migration in the K-1 cells.Conclusion E2 induces the expression and secretion of TFF1 in K-1 cells through ERα-dependent manner,and thus promotes the proliferation and migration of the cells.
