Chinese Journal of School Health 2025;46(2):200-204
Objective:
To explore the longitudinal associations between dietary macronutrients and lung function in schoolaged children, so as to provide the nutritional research evidence for promoting children s lung health.
Methods:
In November 2021, two primary schools located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province were selected from the Southwest China Childhood Nutrition and Growth (SCCNG) cohort by a stratified cluster random sampling method, enrolling a total of 1 112 school aged children aged 8 to 13 years. At baseline, the dietary and sociodemographic characteristics of the children were assessed. One year later, the forced vital capacity (FVC) of the children was measured and converted into Z scores (FVC- Z ), while the vital capacity index (VCI) was also calculated. Generalized linear regression analysis was employed to examine the associations between dietary macronutrients and lung function, considering interactions with gender and age, followed by stratified analysis.
Results:
After adjusting for confounding factors, the analysis results of the generalized linear regression model showed that the carbohydrate energy ratio was negatively correlated with FVC- Z ( β =-0.02) and VCI ( β =-0.16), while the fat energy ratio showed a positive correlation with FVC- Z ( β =0.03) and VCI ( β =0.23) ( P <0.05). The protein energy ratio was positively correlated with FVC- Z ( β =0.09) and VCI ( β =0.60) specifically in girls ( P <0.05). Additionally, there was an interaction effect of age on the associations between macronutrients and lung function ( P <0.01); in children aged 8-9 and 10-11, the carbohydrate energy supply ratio was negatively correlated with FVC- Z ( β =-0.04, -0.03) and VCI ( β =-0.29, -0.21), and fat energy supply ratio was positively correlated with FVC- Z ( β =0.07, 0.05) and VCI ( β =0.46, 0.32) ( P <0.05).
Conclusions
There are age and sex differences in the association of dietary macronutrients with lung function, with a low carbohydrate, high fat diet promoting lung function in children. Additionally, protein intake appears to have a positive influence on the lung function of girls. The early school age period may represent a critical window for dietary interventions aimed at promoting lung health.

Chinese Journal of School Health 2024;45(1):16-20
Objective:
To determine the association between the intake of five major types of prepackaged foods and the growth and development of school aged children, so as to provide a theoretical basis for guiding school aged children and their parents to make healthy prepackaged food choices.
Methods:
Based on data from the South West China Childhood Nutrition and Growth Cohort (SCCNG), 381 children (6-11 years of age) were selected by stratified cluster sampling. Dietary intake and pubertal development were collected using questionnaires, and anthropometric measurements were obtained. Children were followed up until November 2022. Binary Logistic regression models were used to analyze the prospective association between prepackaged food intake and the growth and development of school aged children.
Results:
The total intake of the five major types of prepackaged foods was 316.1 (197.1,501.4) g/d. After 2 years of follow up evaluations, 16.5% of school aged children were shown to be overweight and obese. Early spermarche occurred in 12.6% of boys and early menarche occurred in 15.4% of girls. The following findings were suggested after adjusting for the mothers education level, average gross monthly family income, whether or not the family had one child only, geographic area of residence, body mass index Z score, average duration of daily exercise, and total dietary energy intake: convenience food intake might increase the risk of early spermarche ( OR =9.37); fruit and vegetable intake might decrease the risk of early spermarche and menarche ( OR =0.33,0.17); and fish, poultry, meat, and egg intake might increase the risk of early menarche ( OR =7.59)( P <0.05). Intake of the five types of prepackaged foods was not associated with being overweight or obese after adjusting for confounders ( OR =1.40, 0.57, 0.73, 1.33,1.57, P >0.05).
Conclusions
The relationship between intake of the five major types of prepackaged foods and pubertal development is inconsistent and no significant correlation was detected between the intake of prepackaged foods and overweight or obese children. Nutrition education should be strengthened to help children and their parents choose healthy prepackaged foods.

Chinese Journal of School Health 2024;45(3):335-340
Objective:
To explore the differences in the gut microbiota of primary school students with different levels of sugar sweetened beverage intake, so as to provide scientific evidence for better identification of health risks in children and the development of targeted health policies.
Methods:
In June 2022, a total of 192 healthy primary school students from Chengdu were selected using a stratified cluster random sampling method. The sugar sweetened beverage intake was assessed through a dietary frequency questionnaire. Based on the median daily sugar sweetened beverage intake, primary school students were categorized into a low intake group ( n =96) and a high intake group ( n =96). The gut microbiota in fresh fecal samples from the two groups of primary school students was analyzed using 16S rRNA high throughput sequencing, and the diversity and community structure differences in the gut microbiota were compared.
Results:
Children in the low intake group had a sugar sweetened beverage intake of (21.3±1.6) mL/d, while the high intake group had an intake of (269.6±37.3) mL/d. Diversity analysis results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the low intake and the high intake group in terms of α diversity metrics: Observed_otus index [298.50 (259.75, 342.25), 305.50 (244.25, 367.75)], Goods_coverage index [1.00 (1.00, 1.00), 1.00 (1.00, 1.00)], Chao index [304.18 (260.75, 348.78), 305.88 (245.68, 370.88)], Shannon index [5.88 (5.29, 6.45), 5.71 (4.89, 6.28)] and Simpson index [0.95 (0.91, 0.97), 0.94 (0.88, 0.97)] ( Z =-0.64, -0.76, -0.54, -1.76, -1.67, P >0.05). Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was observed in β diversity between the two groups ( R 2=0.006, P >0.05). At the genus level, the abundance of Blautia [0.033 (0.018, 0.055)] and Fusicatenibacter [0.009 (0.005, 0.015)] were higher in the low intake group compared to the high intake group [0.024 (0.013, 0.041),0.006 (0.003, 0.011)]and differences were statistically significant ( Z =-2.52, -2.81, P <0.05). LEfSe analysis highlighted intergroup differences primarily in Blautia, Fusicatenibacter and Sarcina( LDA= 3.56,3.12,3.53, P <0.05).
Conclusions
There is no significant difference in the diversity and overall structure of the gut microbiota in primary school students with different levels of sugar sweetened beverage intake. However, there are species variations at the genus level. The information can serve as a scientific basis for identifying health risks in primary school students and formulating targeted health strategies.

Chinese Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2024;32(1):50-56
Gastrointestinal graft versus host disease is one of the most severe complications after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which can occur in patients of any age groups. Its clinical manifestations include nausea, vomit, abdominal pain, diarrhea and the like. Severe gastrointestinal graft versus host disease could directly influence the patients' clinical prognosis and therapeutic efficacy of transplantation. Here we had a review of the research progress on nutritional support and diet management strategies for gastrointestinal graft versus host disease. It is of great clinical significance to form a step-wise nutritional support model to reduce the risk of malnutrition in patients with gastrointestinal graft versus host disease, which would contribute to improving patients' general condition, relieving digestive tract symptoms, and reducing the risk of complications.

Chinese Journal of Pathology 2024;53(2):143-148
Objective:To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics of SMARCA4-deficient thoracic undifferentiated tumors, and the diagnostic value of the cells in serous effusion. Methods:Eleven cases of SMARCA4-deficient tumor were collected from the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University, China from January 2018 to July 2023, which were diagnosed using cell block of serous effusion. The clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular genetic features were reviewed, along with related literature. Results:All the 11 patients were males with ages ranging from 54 to 77 years (median 64 years). Nine patients were smokers and two had an unknown smoking history. Most of them complained of cough and dyspnea with pleural effusion. The primary tumor sites included lung (9 cases), thoracic wall (1 case), and mediastinum (1 case), while 3 patients had a history of lung surgery. Histologically, tumor cells were large and pleomorphic, with increased nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio. They also showed round nuclei, conspicuous nucleoli, and basophilic cytoplasm in serous effusion. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells in all cases were negative for SMARCA4/BRG1, CKpan and CK7, but positive for SMARCB1/INI1. Some of the cases were positive for CD34 (7/11), synaptophysin (4/11) and SALL4 (2/11). Histologically, monotonous tumor cells formed solid sheets or anastomosing islands with poor cell adhesion and rhabdoid morphology. Brisk mitotic figures were accompanied by large areas of necrosis. Some cases focally exhibited syncytia, and some had bright cytoplasm and vesicular chromatin. The immunohistochemical profiles in the tumor tissues were consistent with those of cytology. Six cases were negative for PD-L1 (22c3). Among the 6 cases analyzed by targeted next generation sequencing, concurrent SMARCA4 and TP53 mutations were detected in all 6 cases. Some of the 6 tumors showed mutations of STK11, CDKN2A, and MET, and amplification of ERBB2, exon deletion of BRCA2, etc. Follow-up information was available in all cases and ranged from 2 to 24 months. The patients showed metastases to various sites, including lymph node, liver, kidney, adrenal gland, brain, bone and other sites. Four patients died of the tumor. The survival time of 4 patients who underwent radical resection or radiofrequency ablation was more than 13 months.Conclusions:SMARCA4-deficient thoracic sarcoma is a rare but highly aggressive tumor with dismal prognosis and rhabdomyoid features. It is difficult to diagnose this disease using only serous effusion samples. This tumor thus warrants careful consideration. Accurate diagnosis can greatly improve early diagnosis and treatment of these tumors.
