Sugar alcohol sweeteners are now widely used in the food additives industry as sugar substitutes. According to the World Health Organization, long-term intake of artificial sweeteners may have negative effects on health, but the only exception is sugar alcohols. As a result, researches on sugar alcohol sweeteners have gained increasing study interests in recent years. As the study progresses, it has been found that sugar alcohol sweeteners are closely related with gut microbes, lipid metabolism, cardiovascular disease and tumors. In addition, recent studies have also shown that some sugar alcohols are endogenous metabolites which can predict the risk of a variety of diseases. This review systematically details the effects of sugar alcohol sweeteners on human body and the underlying mechanisms, in order to provide a reference for the scientific research in this field.

A 9-year-old boy presented with pruritic erythema and erosions of the scalp for 1 month, which spread all over the body for 1 week. Histopathological examination of the skin lesions showed blisters forming under the granular layer of the epidermis, a large number of acantholytic cells in the blisters, and perivascular infiltration of lymphocytes and eosinophils in the superficial dermis. Direct immunofluorescence study showed reticular deposition of IgG and complement C3 between epidermal cells, and negative staining for IgM and IgA. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed the presence of serum anti-Dsg1 antibody (157.00 U/ml) . The patient was diagnosed with pemphigus foliaceus. After admission, the patient showed poor response to the treatment with prednisone at a dose of 40 mg/d. After the treatment with low-dose rituximab (100 mg per week, 4 weeks) combined with prednisone (20 mg/d) , her condition was well controlled. The dosage of prednisone gradually decreased to 7.5 mg/d for maintenance treatment, and no recurrence was observed during 24-month follow-up.

Objective:
To explore the long-term effects of radiation injury and to provide scientific basis for the evaluation of the effects of ionizing radiation injury by carrying out medical follow-up of patients involved in the " 5.7" radiative source accident in Nanjing in 2014.
Methods:
Through interviewing and investigating, we inquired about the new disease history of the exposed patients from rehabilitation treatment to medical follow-up peroid. Physical and laboratory examinations were carried out. According to relevant standards, physiological and biochemical indexes such as hematopoietic system, immune system, endocrine system, ophthalmology, circulatory system, digestive system, urinary system and bone mineral density were systematically evaluated, with the long-term effects being evaluated.
Results:
The patient′s vital signs were good without new diseases. The indexes of hematopoietic system, immune system and endocrine system tended to be normal, the circulatory system, digestive system and urinary system showed degenerative changes, the ophthalmic examination showed visual acuity continue to decline, and bone mineral density examination indicated low bone mass.
Conclusions
Physiological and biochemical indicators of the patients gradually returned to normal without obvious symptoms of radiation damage. Further medical follow-up observation still needs to continue.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect difference between acupuncture of "five needles therapy" and conventional acupuncture for asthma of latent cold phlegm-fluid in the lung.
METHODSTwo hundred and ten cases were randomly assigned into an observation group and a control group, 105 cases in each one. Finally 7 cases were dropped out in the observation group; 6 cases in the control group. Feishu (BL 13), Dazhui (GV 14), Fengmen (BL 12) were used in the observation group; conventional acupuncture was used in the control group, and the main acupoints were Feishu (BL 13), Zhongfu (LU 1), Tiantu (CV 22), Danzhong (CV 17), Kongzui (LU 6), Dingchuan (EX-B 1), Fenglong (ST 40), Fengmen (BL 12), Taiyuan (LU 9). The needles were retained for 30 min each time, once a day for continuous 12 days. The scores of the individual symptoms and signs were observed before treatment and on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th days, including pant, cough, cough up phlegm, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm, wheezing rale and shortness of breath. The clinical effects were compared between the two groups.
RESULTSThe scores of six individual symptoms and signs on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th days in the two groups were lower than those before treatment (all<0.05), except the score of wheezing rale in the control group on the 3rd day (>0.05). The scores of pant, wheezing rale, cough on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th days in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (all<0.05), except the score of wheezing rale score on the 3rd day (>0.05). There were no significant difference between the two groups about the scores of cough up phlegm, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm and shortness of breath on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th days (all>0.05), except the score of fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm in the observation group was lower than that in the control group on the 12th day (<0.05). 46 cases were clinical cured, 39 cases were markedly effective, 10 cases were effective and 3 cases were ineffective in the observation group with the total effective rate of 96.9%. 23 cases were clinical cured, 43 cases were markedly effective, 24 cases were effective and 9 cases were ineffective in the control group with the total effective rate of 90.9%. The difference was statistical (<0.05).
CONCLUSION"Five needles therapy" has significant therapeutic effect for asthma of latent cold phlegm-fluid in the lung, which is better than conventional acupuncture.

Objective To compare the minimally invasive sinus tarsi approach and lateral intensive L-shaped approach in the therapeutic effects concerning medial wall reduction and calcaneal alignment for cal-caneal fractures. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted of the 52 patients with calcaneal fracture who had been treated at Department of Foot & Ankle Surgery, Guangzhou Orthopaedic Hospital from January 2010 to December 2014. They were 39 men and 13 women, 28 to 46 years of age ( average, 40.4 years ). Of them, 26 were treated via the sinus tarsi approach ( minimally invasive group ) and the other 26 via the con-ventional lateral extensile L-shaped approach ( conventional group ) . X-ray axial films of the calcaneus were taken pre-operatively and post-operatively to evaluate the medial wall reduction and calcaneal alignment. The American Orthopedic Foot Ankle Society ( AOFAS ) ankle-hindfoot scale was adopted to assess the therapeutic effects. Results The average follow-up period for this cohort was 18 months ( from 12 to 24 months). The post-operative varus angle was 7.41°± 5.17°for the minimally invasive group and 8.01°± 5.33°for the con-ventional group; the correction of varus angle was 6.60°± 6.23°for the minimally invasive group and 8.57°± 6.64°for the conventional group; the good to excellent rate of medial wall reduction was 42.3% ( 11/26 ) for the minimally invasive group and 53.8% ( 14/26 ) for the conventional group; the AOFAS score was 89.5 ± 7.0 for the minimally invasive group and 86.2 ± 8.2 for the conventional group. There were no statistically signifi-cant differences between the 2 groups in all the above comparisons ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusion The mini-mally invasive sinus tarsi approach can be a fine choice for treatment of calcaneal fractures, because it leads to no differences in medial wall reduction, postoperative varus angle and postoperative correction of varus angle, compared with the conventional lateral extensile L-shaped approach.

Objective To explore the effects of different dose rates of X-ray under the same dose on cell clonogenic formation in non-small-cell lung cancer cell line A549 in order to provide experimental basis for clinical radiotherapy plan. Methods The A549 cells were cultured at low density and irradiated with X-rays at dose of 4 Gy and selected dose rates of 1, 2, 4 and 6 Gy/min, respectively, from a linear accelerator. The 8th day after irradiation, the cells were fixed and stained with Giemsa solution, and colonies containing at least 50 cells were counted. The plating efficiency and surviving fraction were calculated. Results The clonogenic number in non-irradiated cells was 88.6±4.6. The numbers were significantly reduced in irradiated cells at dose rate 1, 2, 4 and 6 Gy/min (12.3±3.4, 9.0±0.8, 5.6±1.0, 11.5±1.7, respectively) than that in non-irradiated control cells (F=678.799, P<0.05). The plating efficiencies were decreased in irradiated cells, especially in 4 Gy/min irradiated cells, which was lower than that in any of the other three dose rate groups (P< 0.05). Conclusions Though at same radiation dose, cancer cells have different clonogenic formation efficiency when irradiation with X-ray at different dose rates. Thus, treatment with optimal dose rate may improve the radiotherapy efficacy.
