Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a kind of non-coding RNA (ncRNA) with covalent closed-loop structure. They have attracted more and more attention because of their high stability, evolutionary conservatism, and tissue expression specificity. It has shown that circRNAs are involved in the development of a variety of diseases including malignant tumors recently. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor that occurs in the nasopharynx and has a unique ethnic and geographical distribution in South China and Southeast Asia. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is closely related to the development of NPC. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are the mainstays of treatment for NPC. But tumor recurrence or distant metastasis is the leading cause of death in patients with NPC. Several studies have shown that circRNAs, as gene expression regulators, play an important role in NPC and affect the progression of NPC. This review mainly summarized the research status of abnormally expressed circRNAs in NPC and EBV-encoded circRNAs. We also discussed the possibility of circRNAs as a therapeutic target, diagnostic and prognostic marker for NPC.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) refers to damage to the structure and function of spinal cord caused by external trauma. This damage results in the loss of sensation, movement, or autonomous functions, which can lead to partial or complete paralysis and impact the patients’ independence and quality of life. Studying drugs related to spinal cord injuries and their mechanisms of action will help enhance patients’ quality of life and alleviate social and economic burdens. Traumatic spinal cord injury can be categorized into primary and secondary injuries. It leads to ongoing neurodegeneration, inflammation, and scarring, necessitating continuous intervention to reduce the cascading effects of secondary injuries. Regenerative repair of SCI has been one of the most challenging problems in medicine. It is characterized by the involvement of microglia, phagocytes (including neutrophils and monocytes), and antigen-presenting cells of the central nervous system, such as dendritic cells. These inflammatory mediators contribute to axonal demyelination and degeneration, leading to severe nerve damage. Currently, there has been little progress in the clinical treatment of SCI. Current clinical modalities, such as surgical interventions and hormone shock therapies, have not yielded specific pharmacotherapeutic options, hindering significant functional recovery. The current treatment methods are ineffective in alleviating oxidative stress and neuroinflammatory responses caused by spinal cord injury. They also do not offer neural protection, resulting in ongoing neurofunctional degradation. Intravenous injection of methylprednisolone through the arm has been used as a treatment option for spinal cord injury. Recent studies have shown that the potential side effects of the drug, such as blood clots and pneumonia, outweigh its benefits. Methylprednisolone is no longer recommended for the routine treatment of spinal cord injury. In recent years, significant progress has been made in spinal cord injury intervention through the use of nanotechnology and biomaterials. Nanozymes can enhance the therapeutic efficacy of spinal cord injury by catalyzing the clearance of free radicals similar to enzymes and suppressing inflammatory responses. Nanozymes can reduce the degree of fibrosis, promote neuron survival and angiogenesis, and provide favorable conditions for tissue regeneration. Through in vitro and in vivo toxicology experiments, it was found that the nanozyme demonstrates good biocompatibility and safety. It did not cause any significant changes in body weight, hematological indicators, or histopathology. These findings indicate the potential for its clinical applications. Based on current research results and discoveries, nanozymes have broad application prospects in the biomedical field. There are numerous potential research directions and application areas that are worthy of further exploration and development. Although there have been preliminary studies on the catalytic performance of nanozymes, further research is needed to thoroughly investigate their catalytic mechanisms. Further exploration of the interaction between nanozymes and substrates, reaction kinetics, and factors affecting catalytic activity will help to better understand their mechanism of action in the field of biocatalysis.

This study aimed to propose an operational definition of late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) that incorporates both clinical symptoms and serum testosterone measurements to evaluate the prevalence of LOH in aging males in China. A population-based sample of 6296 men aged 40 years-79 years old was enrolled from six representative provinces in China. Serum total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured and free testosterone (cFT) was calculated. The Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) scale was used to evaluate the LOH symptoms. Finally, 5078 men were included in this analysis. The TT levels did not decrease with age (P = 0.59), and had no relationship with AMS symptoms (P = 0.87 for AMS total score, P = 0.74 for ≥ 3 sexual symptoms). The cFT levels decreased significantly with age (P < 0.01) and showed a negative association with the presence of ≥ 3 sexual symptoms (P = 0.03). The overall estimated prevalence of LOH was 7.8% (395/5078) if a cFT level <210 pmol l

Objective:To determine the current situation of food safety risk monitoring ability of centers for disease control and prevention (CDCs) in a province, and provide reference for strengthening the construction of food safety monitoring ability in the future. Methods:A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among 14 CDCs who are responsible for food safety risk monitoring in the province in 2018. Results:The ratio of food inspection staff with senior, middle, and primary professional titles was 1∶1∶1. The educational background of food inspection staff at the provincial and municipal levels was mainly bachelor degree or above, while that of county level directly under the administration of the province was mainly college degree. The age composition of the staff at the provincial level tended to be elder; however, there were more staff with less working experience at the county level. The qualification proportion of laboratory area was 50%. The distribution proportion of food inspection equipment in the CDC at all levels was 83.3%, 79.5% and 36.3%, respectively. In total, 14 CDCs completed the monitoring task as required. They were all accredited with laboratory qualifications; however, one CDC did not conduct re-evaluation after the certification of food inspection qualification expired. Each CDC ensured the accuracy and reliability of monitoring data through the supervision in food testing. Conclusion:The food safety risk monitoring ability of the CDCs in the province is continuously improved, which can meet the needs of routine monitoring. However, the composition of professional titles of food inspection staff is not very reasonable. There is still a gap between the equipment configuration and the national requirements. The ability of food inspection needs to be improved, in which quality management and laboratory qualification should be further strengthened.

Chinese Medical Journal 2019;132(16):1959-1964
Background:
Nickel-induced allergic contact dermatitis (Ni-ACD) is a global health problem. More detailed knowledge on the skin uptake of haptens is required. This study aimed to investigate the penetration process and distribution of nickel in skin tissues with late phase and early phase of Ni-ACD to understand the mechanisms of metal allergy.
Methods:
Forty Hartley guinea pigs were divided into four groups according to the NiSO4 sensitizing concentration and the NiSO4 challenged concentration: the 5% NiSO4-group, 5% to 10% (sensitization-challenge; late phase group); 10% NiSO4-group, 10% to 10% (sensitization-challenge; early-phase group); and the positive and negative controls. Pathological biopsies were performed on each group. The depth profile of nickel element concentration in the skin of guinea pigs was detected by synchrotron radiation micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (SR-μ-XRF) and micro X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (μ-XANES).
Results:
In each section, the nickel element concentration in both the 5% NiSO4-group and 10% NiSO4-group was significantly higher than that in the negative control group. In the upper 300-μm section of skin for the early phase group, the nickel element concentration was significantly higher than that in the lower section of skin. In deeper sections (<200 μm) of skin, the concentration of nickel in the early phase group was approximately equal to that in the late phase group. The curve of the late phase group was flat, which means that the nickel element concentration was distributed uniformly by SR-μ-XRF. According to the XANES data for the 10% NiSO4 metal salt solution, structural changes occurred in the skin model sample, indicating that nickel was not present in the Ni2+ aqueous ionic state but in the nickel-binding protein.
Conclusions
This study showed that the distribution of the nickel element concentration in ACD skin tissue was different between the early phase and late phase groups. The nickel element was not present in the Ni2+ aqueous ionic state but bound with certain proteins to form a complex in the stratum corneum in ACD model tissue.

Chinese Journal of Traumatology 2018;21(2):88-95
PURPOSEMacrophages are known to be important for healing numerous injured tissues depending on their functional phenotypes in response to different stimuli. The objective of this study was to reveal macrophage phenotypic changes involved in exercise-induced skeletal muscle injury and regeneration.
METHODSAdult male Sprague-Dawley rats experienced one session of downhill running (16° decline, 16 m/min) for 90 min. After exercise the blood and soleus muscles were collected at 0 h, 6 h, 12 h, 1 d, 2 d, 3 d, 1 w and 2 w after exercise, separately.
RESULTSIt was showed that CD68 M1 macrophages mainly infiltrated into muscle necrotic sites at 1-3 d, while CD163 M2 macrophages were present in muscles from 0 h to 2 weeks after exercise. Using transmission electron microscopy, we observed activated satellite cells 1 d after exercise. Th1-associated transcripts of iNOS and Ccl2 were inhibited post exercise, while COX-2 mRNA was dramatically increased 12 h after running (p < 0.01). M2 phenotype marker Arg-1 increased 12 h and 3 d (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) after exercise, and Clec10a and Mrc2 were up-regulated in muscles 12 h following exercise (p < 0.05, p < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe data demonstrate the dynamic patterns of macrophage phenotype in skeletal muscle upon eccentric exercise stimuli, and M1 and M2 phenotypes perform different functions during exercise-induced skeletal muscle injury and recovery.
