Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 2023;64(2):154-157
Purpose:
To report the first domestic case of orbital eccrine hidrocystoma.Case summary: A 40-year-old man visited our clinic after an orbital mass was discovered in the left eye. Orbital magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined 1 cm mass on the superomedial side of the orbit, slightly posterior to the globe. The mass was excised completely without rupture through an incision to the upper eyelid skin. The mass appeared more like a cyst than a hemangioma. The diagnosis of eccrine hidrocystoma was confirmed histopathologically. The patient recovered and there was no recurrence at the 6-month follow-up.
Conclusions
Although orbital eccrine hidrocystoma is very rare, it should be included in the differential diagnosis of orbital tumors.

The discovery of neuroglobin (Ngb), a brain- or neuron-specific member of the hemoglobin family, has revolutionized our understanding of brain oxygen metabolism. Currently, how Ngb plays such a role remains far from clear. Here, we report a novel mechanism by which Ngb might facilitate neuronal oxygenation upon hypoxia or anemia. We found that Ngb was present in, co-localized to, and co-migrated with mitochondria in the cell body and neurites of neurons. Hypoxia induced a sudden and prominent migration of Ngb towards the cytoplasmic membrane (CM) or cell surface in living neurons, and this was accompanied by the mitochondria. In vivo, hypotonic and anemic hypoxia induced a reversible Ngb migration toward the CM in cerebral cortical neurons in rat brains but did not alter the expression level of Ngb or its cytoplasm/mitochondria ratio. Knock-down of Ngb by RNA interference significantly diminished respiratory succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and ATPase activity in neuronal N2a cells. Over-expression of Ngb enhanced SDH activity in N2a cells upon hypoxia. Mutation of Ngb at its oxygen-binding site (His64) significantly increased SDH activity and reduced ATPase activity in N2a cells. Taken together, Ngb was physically and functionally linked to mitochondria. In response to an insufficient oxygen supply, Ngb migrated towards the source of oxygen to facilitate neuronal oxygenation. This novel mechanism of neuronal respiration provides new insights into the understanding and treatment of neurological diseases such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease and diseases that cause hypoxia in the brain such as anemia.

Philippine Journal of Internal Medicine 2023;61(2):52-56
Background:
Data on the clinical characteristics and outcomes of Filipino cancer patients who acquired the coronavirus
disease 2019 (COVID-19) are limited and local information is lacking. Here we characterize the outcomes of patients with
cancer and COVID-19.
Methods:
Medical records of Filipino cancer patients with COVID-19 from the University of the Philippines – Philippine
General Hospital (UP-PGH), Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), De La Salle – University Medical Center (DLS-
UMC), and St Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC) from March to December 2020 were reviewed.
Results:
Sixty-nine cancer patients were identified to have COVID-19. The mean age was 53 years (range 19-88) and 45
(65%) patients were female. The most prevalent malignancies were from the gastrointestinal tract (16 [23%]) and the breast
(14 [20%]). The majority (34 [49%]) had metastatic disease and had a functional status of Eastern Cooperative Oncology
Group (ECOG) 2 or worse (39 [57%]). Forty-two (61%) patients had active oncologic treatment given for the past three
months and twenty-four (35%) of these patients were on chemotherapy. The most common symptoms upon presentation
were cough (34 [49%]) followed by dyspnea (28 [41%]). COVID-19 severity of this series was as follows: 15 mild (22%), 32
moderate (46%), 7 severe (10%), and 15 critical (22%). The majority received intravenous antibiotics (54 [78%]),
investigational treatments (27 [39%]), and steroids (20 [29%]). Common complications were acute respiratory failure (20
[29%]), acute respiratory distress syndrome (17 [25]), and septic shock (15 [22%]). At the end of the collection period, 21
(30%) cancer patients died. The mean length of hospital stay was 22 days.
Conclusion
Based on the findings of our case series, ECOG 2 and higher, metastatic stage, higher neutrophil to
lymphocyte ratio showed a trend to worse outcomes. Cancer-related treatment within the past months did not appear to
affect outcomes.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2022;30(1):206-210
OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the incidence and types of thalassemia in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.
METHODS:
Automatic capillary electrophoresis was used to screen the thalassemia phenotypes of 22 940 blood samples of pregnant women and puerperants collected in our hospital and some other medical institutions in the prefecture during 2017-2019, among which there were 3 356 cases of Tujia ethnicity, 2 821 cases of Miao ethnicity, and 2 233 cases of Han ethnicity included, whose ethnicity were indicated. The samples with positive result would undergo further genetic testing.
RESULTS:
There were 2 314 cases of suspicious thalassemia were screened from 22 940 cases by the electrophoresis, thus the positive rate was 10.1% (hematological phenotypes from some other institutions were not included). Specifically, there were 1 706 cases with HBA2 less than 2.5%, 255 cases with HBA2 ranged from 2.5% to 3.5%, which displayed abnormal hematology (MCV or/and MCH) or other abnormal bands, and 353 cases with HBA2>3.5%. There were 436 suspected positive patients in 2 314 suspicious samples received further thalassemia gene testing in our hospital, among them 48 cases were diagnosed with α-thalassemia, 85 cases with β-thalassemia, and 2 cases as compound type. The positive diagnosis rate of α-thalassemia gene test was 11.0%, β-thalassemia was 19.4%, and positive pregnant women was 31.0%.
CONCLUSION
The positive rate of thalassemia screening in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture is roughly the same as that in other regions of Hunan. The positive predictive value of β-thalassemia screening is as high as 86%. Compared with the missed screening data, it is recommended to use hematology (MCV, MCH) method combined with capillary hemoglobin electrophoresis for thalassemia screening.
