Behavioural intentions in self-management of chronic musculoskeletal pain in the elderly living in the community:a qualitative study

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the behavioural intentions of self-management of chronic musculoskeletal pain in the elderly living in the community.Methods Descriptive qualitative research method and purposive sampling method were used to select 13 patients aged 65 years and above with chronic musculoskeletal pain at a community health centre in Guangzhou,between February and April 2023.Semi-structured interviews that were developed according to the theory of planned behavior were conducted among the participants.NVivo12 was used to analyse the data acquired from the interviews.Content analysis method was employed to extract the themes.Results Three major themes regarding the behavioural intentions of self-management of chronic musculoskeletal pain were extracted,including differences in attitude toward the pain self-management behaviour,inadequate subjective norm support for pain self-management,and weak perceived behavioural control of pain self-management.Conclusions The behavioural intentions of self-management for chronic musculoskeletal pain among the elderly living in the community require further improvement.Targeted interventions should be implemented to promote the behaviours in self-management of pains.
