Objective To evaluate the effects of the modified needle filtration on bone marrow collection. Methods The original needle filtration was modified and upgraded. Totally 80 bone marrow donors whose bone marrow was collected using the original needle filtration were randomly selected and divided into the control group, while another 80 bone marrow donors whose bone marrow was collected using the modified needle filtration were randomly selected and divided into the modified group. Anesthesia time, time of bone marrow collection, number of 20 ml injectors used and number of nursing staff were compared between the two groups. Results The anesthesia time of the control group was (112.30±23.87) min, while that of the modified group was (100.50±25.68) min (t=3.027, P<0.01). The time of bone marrow collection of the control group was 52.00 (41.25, 60.75) min, whereas that of the modified group was 39.00(31.25, 53.00) min (U=-3.879, P<0.01). The number of 20 ml injectors used in the control group was 121(103, 145), while that in the modified group was 80(50, 100) (U=-7.101, P<0.01). Two nurses were required in the control group, whereas only 1 nurse was needed for bone marrow collection in the modified group. Conclusions The modified needle filtration, when used in bone marrow collection, can shorten the anesthesia time and the time of bone marrow collection, save sterile materials and nursing staff, reduce the wastage of bone marrow blood, and lessen pricking wound.
