The impact of media usage on the career expectations of medical students:an analysis of mediation effect based on media participation behavior

Abstract:
Objective:To investigate the media usage situation,media participation behavior,and career expectations related to medical students'professional learning,and explore the mediating effect of media participation behavior between media usage and career expectations,this paper proposed strategies for empowering education through media of promoting medical career identity and career preparation.Methods:Drawing on some scales with excellent reliability and validity,a questionnaire that is suitable for this study was designed to measure demographic characteristics,media usage,media participation behavior,and career expectations.The independent,mediating,and dependent variables were all measured using a 5-scaled Likert scale.According to convenience sampling and snowball sampling,medical students nationwide were surveyed through questionnaires filled in online.Results:For 1,040 respondents,the scores of media usage related to professional studies,media participation behavior,and career expectations were(2.844±0.830),(2.760±0.699)and(2.666±0.767),respectively.There were significant positive correlations among medical students between media usage and media participation behaviors(r=0.217,P<0.01),career expectations(r=0.122,P<0.01),as well as media participation behaviors and career expectations(r=0.523,P<0.01).Media participation behaviors,as a mediating variable,played a significant effect in the impact of media usage and career expectations among medical students,with a mediating effect accounting for 26.32%.Conclusions:The logic of participatory information production,new ways of embodied cognition,and the rules of the career life cycle should be drawn upon to empower the comprehensive quality of medical students through media,upgrade the blended teaching mode,improve the medical humanities education chain,and achieve the goal of enhancing the career expectations of medical students.
