1.Phytochemical profile and nematicidal activity of a hydroalcoholic extract from Cazahuate flowers (Ipomoea pauciflora M. Martens & Galeotti) against Haemonchus contortus infective larvae

Haemonchus contortus (Hc) is a hematophagous parasite affecting the health and productivity of
flocks. The administration of chemical anthelmintic drugs (AH) is the common method of deworming;
however, generates resistance in the parasites to AH and it is a public health risk due to drug residues in
milk, meat and sub-products. Natural compounds from plants are explored to diminish this parasitosis,
improving their health and productivity, without the negative effects of AH. Ipomoea genus is a group
of climbing plants belonging to the Convulvulaceae family possessing perennial leaves and tuberous
roots. Medicinal properties has been attributed to this plant including nutritional agents, emetics,
diuretics, diaphoretics, purgatives and pesticides. The objective of this study was assessing the in vitro
nematocidal activity of a hydroalcoholic extract (HA-E) obtained from Ipomoea pauciflora (Cazahuate)
flowers against Hc infective larvae (L3) and to identify its phytochemical profile (PhC-P). The assay was
carried out using microtiter plates (MTP). Four HA-E concentrations were assessed and Ivermectin and
distilled water were used as positive and negative control groups, respectively. Approximately 100 Hc
L3 were deposited in each well (n=12) and incubated at 25–35°C for 7 days. Data were analyzed using
ANOVA and a General Linear Model (GLM) followed by Tukey test (P<0.05). The treatments showing a
concentration-dependent effect (CDE) were analyzed to identify their 50% and 90% lethal concentrations
(CL50, 90) via a Probit Analysis. The highest mortality was observed at 50 mg/mL (82.64 ± 0.71%) and
the lowest at 6.25 mg/mL (56.46 ± 2.49%), showing a CDE with increasing mortality from 6.25 to 50
mg/mL. The PhC-P revealed the presence of alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins and triterpenes/
sterols. A HA-E from flowers of I. pauciflora will be considered to assess its potential use in the control
of haemonchosis in small ruminants.

The main characteristics of publications on mental health in times of COVID-19, made by authors affiliated with Latin American institutions, are here described. A retrospective and descriptive analysis of 2,656 articles indexed in Scopus database during 2020 is conducted. This database was chosen for its high-quality scientific journals. The results indicate that Latin American scientific production represents 4.74% of the world production, and Brazil is the country with the largest production of publications, followed by Colombia, Mexico and Chile. Latin American scientific works have been published in 82 journals. Psychiatry Research is the journal with the largest number of publications, followed by Estudos De Psicologia Campinas (Brazil). The authors are mainly affiliated with institutions in Brazil, and Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul as well as Universidad del Rosario in Colombia are the institutions with the largest number of publications. Review articles and letters to the editor are the most cited types of publications. Finally, it was found that the most used keywords were the descriptors coronavirus, pandemic, mental disease, mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. We conclude that in Latin America there is a need for further research on mental health among health care personnel and the general population in order to establish knowledge that creates public policies for mental health problems generated during the course of the pandemic
3.Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 is associated with High-density lipoprotein in Systemic sclerosis Female patients

INTRODUCTION: Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is a circulating regulator of phosphate and vitamin D metabolism and has been implicated as a putative pathogenic factor in cardiovascular disease. The objectives of this study were: to compare serum FGF23 levels between systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients and healthy controls and to investigate possible associations between FGF23 and serum lipid profile in SSc patients.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed in San Cecilio Hospital, Granada (Spain) from November 2017 to May 2019. We enrolled 62 consecutive female patients affected by SSc and 62 healthy women who served as controls. Cardiovascular risk factors and related biochemical parameters were collected. Serum FGF23 was analyzed using enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Linear regression was used to examine the cross-sectional associations of serum FGF23 concentrations with high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c).
RESULTS: There was no significant differences in FGF23 levels between the patients and controls (78.2 ± 60.5 vs. 80.3 ± 56.3 pg/mL, p= 0.662), but we found a statistically significant inverse relationship between FGF23 and HDL-c measurements (r= -0.27; p= 0.03) in women with SSc. In addition, in the linear regression model, higher FGF23 concentrations were associated with lower HDL-c [β = -1.45 95% CI (-2.81, -0.08); p < 0.05].
CONCLUSIONS: We report an association between circulating FGF23 and HDL-c in SSc female patients, representing a novel pathway linking high FGF23 to an increased cardiovascular risk.

COVID-19, a disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has produced a serious emergency for global public health, placing enormous stress on national health systems in many countries. Several studies suggest that cytokine storms (interleukins) may play an important role in severe cases of COVID-19. Neutralizing key inflammatory factors in cytokine release syndrome (CRS) could therefore be of great value in reducing the mortality rate. Tocilizumab (TCZ) in its intravenous (IV) form of administration-RoActemra? 20 mg/mL (Roche)-is indicated for treatment of severe CRS patients. Preliminary in-vestigations have concluded that inhibition of IL-6 with TCZ appears to be efficacious and safe, with several ongoing clinical trials. This has led to a huge increase in demand for IV TCZ for treating severe COVID-19 patients in hospitals, which has resulted in drug shortages. Here, we present a comparability study assessing the main critical physicochemical attributes of TCZ solutions used for infusion, at 6 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL, prepared from RoActemra? 20 mg/mL (IV form) and from RoActemra? 162 mg (0.9 mL solution pre-filled syringe, subcutaneous(SC) form), to evaluate the use of the latter for preparing clinical solutions required for IV administration, so that in a situation of shortage of the IV medicine, the SC form could be used to prepare the solutions for IV delivery of TCZ. It is important to remember that during the current pandemic all the medicines are used off-label, since none of them has yet been approved for the treatment of COVID-19.
5.Human intestinal protozoa in fresh asparagus from different types of markets in northwest Mexico

Caborca is one of the most productive asparagus-growing regions in the state of
Sonora in northwest Mexico, an area where some fresh fruits and vegetables are sold at
unregulated open-air street markets. This is a cross-sectional study in which fifty bundles of
asparagus for exportation, 50 bundles of sub-standard asparagus, and 50 bundles of asparagus
from open-air markets were selected randomly and then subjected to Faust, Kinyoun and
ELISA testing to detect intestinal parasites. Pearson’s chi-square (χ2) and Student-Newman-
Keuls tests were used to estimate differences among the sampling site groups (P < 0.05). The
pathogens Cryptosporidium spp. (29%) G. intestinalis (5%) and Cyclospora spp. (3%) were
found in the asparagus sold in the region. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. was
higher in both the sub-standard asparagus and the product sampled from the open-air markets
than in the samples for exportation (P < 0.05). This is the first study to demonstrate
contamination by intestinal parasites in asparagus sold in different markets in northwest
Mexico.

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare soft tissue
tumour of uncertain differentiation and low metastatic
potential, which occurs predominantly in children and
young adults. It occurs mostly within the extremities, trunk,
head and neck. We report the case of a 32-year-old female
that was operated in our hospital in 2016 and twice in 2017.
The patient had headaches and neck pain initially in 2016.
We discuss the radiographic and histologic features initially
found and the findings that ultimately led to the diagnosis of
AFH. The patient had a past history of Hodgkin lymphoma.
7.Immune response in Blackbelly lambs to Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis mixed infection in a hot and humid climate

The main objective was to determine the immune response of Blackbelly lambs
infected with Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, or both species. In
the first stage, an experimental challenge was performed with 200 infective larvae (L3)/kg
body weight (BW) of H. contortus (Hct, n = 8). Additionally, eight animals were infected with
500 L3/kg BW of T. colubriformis (Tcl), eight lambs with the mixed infection at the same dose
(HctTcl), and lambs without infection were the control group. In the second infection, the
same lambs were reinfected with high doses: 400 L3/kg BW of Hct and 900 L3/kg BW of Tcl.
The third stage consisted of a natural reinfection in grazing. Faecal samples were taken to
determine the faecal egg count (FEC) of gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs). IgA was
determined in serum and saliva by an indirect Enzyme-Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA).
The haematological parameters were recorded. With the first challenge, it was not possible
to promote an immune response, whereas in the second infection, FEC were higher than 1000
eggs per gram of faeces (EPG) in infected animals. During the third stage, FECs were higher
in lambs infected with Tcl. Eosinophils (EOS) did not show differences in the first and second
stages, but during grazing the infected lambs had higher counts than the control group (P <
0.05). IgA activity values showed the same trend, and lambs infected with HctTcl had a
higher response (33% of the positive standard) than groups mono-infected (16.5% and 22.6%,
respectively).
8.Airway management through submental derivation: a safe and easily reproduced alternative for patients with complex facial trauma

OBJECTIVES:
Airway management in patients with panfacial trauma is complicated. In addition to involving facial lesions, such trauma compromises the airway, and the use of intermaxillary fixation makes it difficult to secure ventilation by usual approaches (nasotracheal or endotracheal intubation). Submental airway derivation is an alternative to tracheostomy and nasotracheal intubation, allowing a permeable airway with minimal complications in complex patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
This is a descriptive, retrospective study based on a review of medical records of all patients with facial trauma from January 2003 to May 2015. In total, 31 patients with complex factures requiring submental airway derivation were included. No complications such as bleeding, infection, vascular, glandular, or nervous lesions were presented in any of the patients.
RESULTS:
The use of submental airway derivation is a simple, safe, and easy method to ensure airway management. Moreover, it allows an easier reconstruction.
CONCLUSION
Based on these results, we concluded that, if the relevant steps are followed, the use of submental intubation in the treatment of patients with complex facial trauma is a safe and effective option.
