1.Health and harmony: House construction and entering a new house practiced by the Ifontoks.

BACKGROUND
The Ifontok people are an ethnolinguistic group in the Mountain Province of the Philippines, for whom constructing and occupying a new house symbolizes the fulfillment of personal aspirations and reflects cultural traditions and beliefs that shape community life, worldviews, and social behavior.
OBJECTIVEThis study examined the house construction rituals of the Ifontok people and their influence on health beliefs, highlighting the interconnectedness of culture, environment, and well-being.
METHODSA qualitative ethnographic design was employed. Six participants were interviewed between February 2021 and June 2022 until data saturation was reached. Colaizzi’s seven-step method was used for the systematic analysis of cultural experiences.
RESULTSThe Ifontok perform rituals before, during, and after house construction, as well as upon occupying a new home. Rooted in traditional beliefs, these rituals aim to ensure structural stability, invite prosperity, and safeguard holistic health. Beyond their symbolic function, the rituals serve as rites of passage that foster psychological reassurance, emotional resilience, and social cohesion. They frame health as a balance of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, while adaptive strategies address challenges in sustaining these practices amid modern influences.
CONCLUSIONIfontok house construction rituals integrate practical building practices, spiritual beliefs, and communal welfare. They promote mindful living, psychological well-being, and environmental awareness, offering insights for educators and healthcare practitioners working with Indigenous communities.

2.Filipino translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the diabetic foot knowledge subscale (DFKS) and foot self-care behavior scale (FSCBS) and its content validation and reliability testing.

BACKGROUND
Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes in the Philippines. Diabetic foot complications represent a prevalent and significant chronic concern for individuals with type 2 diabetes. This poses an immediate community health concern, as diabetic complications may threaten an individual's well-being.
OBJECTIVEThis study intends to cross-culturally adapt the Diabetic Foot Knowledge Subscale (DFKS) and Foot Self-Care Behavior Scale (FSCBS) questionnaires into the Filipino language as an assessment tool among Filipinos with diabetes.
METHODSThe study employed a psychometric research design, where it entailed Phase A and Phase B. Phase A involved the forward translation of the DFKS and FSCBS questionnaires, followed by the synthesis of the translations and backward translation. Subsequently, an expert committee reviewed the translations and concluded the final version. The final translated versions of the questionnaires ensured that it can be understood by an individual who has a Grade 6 level of reading proficiency. Phase B entailed the validity testing with the evaluation of the expert committee, and reliability testing of the said questionnaires with a sample size of 30 participants. A wash-out period of 24 hours was given for the test-retest reliability, followed by data analysis. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires were measured using the item and scale content validity indices and the internal consistency and test-retest reliability, respectively, to ensure their accuracy and appropriateness. The content validity of the questionnaires was evaluated individually by the experts using a Likert scale from 1-4, with 4 being the highest meaning the item was very relevant and succinct. Scores per item were between 3 and 4, which indicate that the translated version of the items were relevant and succinct or were relevant but needed minor revisions.
RESULTSThe validity scores for the translated DFKS and FSCBS questionnaires were obtained using the Scale Content Validity Index (S-CVI) with a score of 0.96 and 0.92, respectively. Moreover, all items in the questionnaires obtained an Item Content Validity Index (I-CVI) of 0.88-1.00. The DFKS also has an acceptable internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.72, while the FSCBS has a good internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.85. The test-retest reliability shows an acceptable Spearman’s correlation at 0.76 for the DFKS and a strong positive Pearson correlation coefficient at 0.73 for the FSCBS.
CONCLUSIONThe validity of the two questionnaires was acceptable and the test-retest reliability showed a strong positive correlation among the items thereby making the cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaires successful. The Filipino versions of the DFKS and FSCBS questionnaires accurately measure the knowledge and behavior of individuals with type 2 diabetes, respectively.

3.Cross-cultural adaptation of the Oswestry Disability Index: From English to Ilokano version.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE
The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI)–English is a valid and reliable instrument for disability measurement in low back pain (LBP) patients. There is no existing ODI–Ilokano that evaluates LBP patients. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the ODI–English into Ilokano.
METHODSThe ODI–English was cross-culturally adapted into Ilokano through a process that included forward translation, synthesis of the translations, back translation, expert committee review, and testing of the pre-final version.
RESULTSForward translation focused on capturing the essence of terms related to pain intensity, personal care, and daily activities, achieving consensus on phrases that accurately mirrored the original English meanings. Subsequent synthesis refined these translations, emphasizing idiomatic and conceptual equivalence over literal interpretations, particularly in nuanced areas like sleep disturbance and social life activities. Backward translation processes aligned Ilokano and English terms, especially for pain intensity and personal care, ensuring consistency across languages. The expert committee review addressed spelling, word choice, and sentence structure, making strategic adjustments for cultural relevance. Pilot testing with participants from Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, Philippines highlighted comprehension challenges with specific terms, leading to adaptations like replacing 'milya' and 'yarda' with metric units and retaining culturally sensitive terms with supplementary English explanations.
CONCLUSIONThis study refined the ODI–English into a culturally adapted Ilokano version, focusing on semantic, idiomatic, and cultural equivalence. Incorporating pilot testing feedback, such as modifying measurement units and addressing sensitive terms, highlighted the thorough adaptation process. The collaborative translation efforts and diverse patient input ensured a culturally resonant ODI version for Ilokano speakers. This adaptation enhances physical therapy practices by improving patient assessments and advocates for adapting patient-reported outcomes to diverse cultures, advancing patient-centered care.

4.Development of the modified Safety Attitude Questionnaire for the medical imaging department.

INTRODUCTION:
Medical errors commonly occur in medical imaging departments. These errors are frequently influenced by patient safety culture. This study aimed to develop a suitable patient safety culture assessment tool for medical imaging departments.
METHODS:
Staff members of a teaching hospital medical imaging department were invited to complete the generic short version of the Safety Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ). Internal consistency and reliability were evaluated using Cronbach's α. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted to examine model fit. A cut-off of 60% was used to define the percentage positive responses (PPR). PPR values were compared between occupational groups.
RESULTS:
A total of 300 complete responses were received and the response rate was 75.4%. In reliability analysis, the Cronbach's α for the original 32-item SAQ was 0.941. Six subscales did not demonstrate good fit with CFA. A modified five-subscale, 22-item model (SAQ-MI) showed better fit (goodness-to-fit index ≥0.9, comparative fit index ≥ 0.9, Tucker-Lewis index ≥0.9 and root mean square error of approximation ≤0.08). The Cronbach's α for the 22 items was 0.921. The final five subscales were safety and teamwork climate, job satisfaction, stress recognition, perception of management and working condition, with PPR of 62%, 68%, 57%, 61% and 60%, respectively. Statistically significant differences in PPR were observed between radiographers, doctors and others occupational groups.
CONCLUSION
The modified five-factor, 22-item SAQ-MI is a suitable tool for the evaluation of patient safety culture in a medical imaging department. Differences in patient safety culture exist between occupation groups, which will inform future intervention studies.

5.Nature-based therapy in healthcare: a focused review and prelude to an upcoming trial at a public tertiary hospital in Singapore.

The advances of modern medicine have inadvertently led to a globally ageing population plagued primarily with non-communicable diseases. In addition to traditional medical approaches, nature-based therapy is becoming an increasingly attractive option, with its potential to holistically address physical and mental facets of health and well-being, and to complement 'preventive' and 'population health' strategies, both of which form the bedrock of sustainable healthcare. However, at present, there is vast heterogeneity in the implementation of nature-based therapy, limiting its widespread and sustainable use. The aim of this review is to practically examine and provide a focussed summary of the current evidence with a view to identifying existing gaps and limitations, and to propose directions for future research and implementation within the healthcare setting.

6.Discussion on the meaning of "yinluo" in Suwen: Shuire Xue Lun.

By analyzing the understandings of water points (acupoints connected with the kidney) and its association with water (kidney), zangfu organs and meridian-collateral recorded in Suwen: Shuire Xue Lun (Discussion on Water and Heat Diseases in Plain Question), it is found that the recognition on the water points is different from that on water diseases in Huangdi Neijing (the Yellow Emperor 's Inner Classic). The recognition on the water points focuses on the core theory, "rooted at the kidney", to explain the water diseases. Besides, in association with the study on the connotation of "luo" in Huangdi Neijing, it is discovered that "yinluo" discussed in water points is actually the misunderstanding of "zang zhi yinluo" that means "the connection by the kidney". It is shown that the discussion of water points refer to the elaboration of zangfu organs and 57 acupoints connected with water (the kidney), rather than the theory of collaterals. The characteristics of these 57 acupoints involved and the related needling techniques provide a new approach to the treatment of zangfu diseases.

7.Textual research on the evolution of the meridian-zangfu related theory in the Warring States, Qin and Han dynasties.

The paper reviews the evolution of the theory related to meridians and zangfu organs during the Warring States, Qin and Han dynasties, so as to reveal the rules and value of its development. By analyzing historical documents, especially Zubi Shiyimai Jiujing (Moxibustion Classics of Eleven Meridians of Legs and Arms), Yinyang Shiyimai Jiujing (Moxibustion Classic on Eleven Yin and Yang Meridians), Laoguanshan bamboo medical slips of Han Dynasty and lacquer figure of meridian points, the evolutionary stages, i.e. the germination, development, and maturity of meridian-zangfu theory, are explored. In the time of the Warring States, Qin and Han dynasties, the meridian-zangfu related theory was developed from the germination to the maturity. In the classics of the early time, Zubi Shiyimai Jiujing and Yinyang Shiyimai Jiujing demonstrated the preliminary relationship between meridians and zangfu organs, focusing on the physiological connection and pathogenesis of three yin meridians of foot and zangfu organs. In the literature of Laoguanshan bamboo medical slips of Han Dynasty and lacquer figure of meridian points, the physiological connection between the yin meridians of hand and foot, and five zang organs, as well as the related diseases were further clarified; additionally, the meridian-zangfu theory had been developed in the field of diagnosis and treatment. In the era of Chapter of Meridians in Lingshu (Miraculous Pivot), there were up to 31 descriptions relevant with the connection of meridian distribution and zangfu physiological functions. It marks the construction of the "circular" flow of meridians and the interior-exterior communication of zang and fu organs; and enriches the knowledge in diseases, diagnosis and treatment with meridians and zangfu organs involved. The review on the evolution of the meridian-zangfu theory is conductive to supplementing and improving the development history of this theory of early time, and further recognizing its development rules and value. The maturity of this theoretical system not only links the meridians with the five zang and six fu organs, but also provides an important theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese medicine.

8.Textual research on the compatibility of Qihai (CV6) and Zusanli (ST36) in medical cases of acupuncture and moxibustion of Weisheng Baojian.

In Weisheng Baojian (Treasures on Health), the compatibility of Qihai (CV6) and Zusanli (ST36) was widely used in the medical cases treated with acupuncture and moxibustion. Through analyzing the medical cases and summarizing the rules of acupoint compatibility, it is found that LUO Tianyi's idea of moxibustion at these two acupoints was different from the other medical masters. He combined these two acupoints in line with "spleen and stomach theory", rather than from the perspective of the direct relationship of acupoints with syndromes and zangfu organs. It reflects the diversity in the understanding of the human body and diseases among medical masters. Therefore, in order to analyze the representative understandings of ancient medical masters on the connotation and rules of acupuncture and moxibustion, we cannot simply focus on the summary from acupuncture-moxibustion masters. It is suggested that the analysis should be expended in the entire field of traditional Chinese medicine to explore the general rules of treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion, investigate the differences, and deepen the basic reasons of the distinction.

Zangxiang Jingmai Yuanliu Zeyin (Exploration of Origin and Development of Visceral Manifestations and Meridians) traces the historical origin for the development of the theories of visceral manifestation and meridians and in terms of the guiding principles and cultural background of these theories structured by the ancients. It chains the clues of the related knowledge development in Huangdi Neijing (the Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic) based on the rich historic literature. By interpreting the classics through history and in view of the specific humanistic perspective, the book exhibits the non-linear evolution track of the theoretical knowledge of visceral manifestation and meridians in the pre-Qin and Han dynasties. It is an important works in the field of acupuncture and humanities, and enlightens the cross-exploration of acupuncture, even in the circle of academic study of TCM and the humanities.

10.Evolution of meridian theory.

Zangxiang Jingmai Yuanliu Zeyin (Exploration of Origin and Development of Visceral Manifestation and Meridians) reveals that the theory of visceral manifestation and meridians of TCM is evolved with Tiandao (way of heaven) in different periods of ancient times. In the Warring States period, the "way of heaven" referred to yinyang and four directions, based on which, the manifestation of four viscera was developed. During the Qin and Han dynasties, six meridians were developed on the basis of six types of qi. In terms of "six types of qi and five elements", five zang, six fu and eleven meridians were structured in TCM. Corresponding to the twelve cycles of the ecliptic and celestial sphere, twelve meridians were composed. The book displays a particular style of research with rich quotations, and provides a new way of thinking for the study of ancient TCM books.
