1.Roles of plant-derived natural compounds in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a systemic disease, and epidemiological projections indicate that by 2050, approximately 23.43% of the Chinese population over 50 years of age will be affected. Given the poor prognosis associated with osteoporosis, the exploration of safe and effective natural products is of considerable significance. Studies investigating the chemical constituents of traditional Chinese medicine in cellular and/or animal models have demonstrated bone-protective effects. Although most of these compounds lack clinical data, they hold considerable potential as lead candidates for drug development. In-depth study of the structure-activity relationship of these natural products not only contributes to elucidating the mechanisms of action but also provides a theoretical basis for the development of novel antiosteoporosis therapies. This review summarizes natural products with potential antiosteoporotic effects reported between 2020 and 2024. Overall, plant-derived natural compounds exhibit antiosteoporotic effects by regulating bone remodeling, inflammation, and oxidative stress, highlighting their promise as multitarget therapeutic candidates.
2.Effects of Jiaotai Pills on high-fat diet-induced hypothalamic inflammation in obese mice

AIM To study the effects of Jiaotai Pills and their single composition drugs on high-fat diet-induced hypothalamic inflammation in obese mice.METHODS C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into the normal group(15 mice)and the high-fat group(75 mice).The mice given 12 weeks of high-fat diet feeding were further randomly divided into the model group,the Jiaotai Pills group,the Coptis chinensis group,the Cinnamomum cassia group and the positive metformin group,with 15 mice in each group.After 6 weeks of administration,the mice had their body weight and fasting blood glucose(FBG)levels detected;their hypothalamic expressions of IL-1β,IL-6,TNF-α and Socs3 mRNA detected by RT-qPCR;their hypothalamic expressions of TLR4,MyD88,IKKβ and activated NF-κB protein detected by Western blot;their hypothalamic expressions of Iba1 and GFAP detected by immunohistochemistry;and their ultrastructural changes of nerve tissues observed using transmission electron microscopy(TEM).RESULTS Compared with the model group,each drug group displayed decreased hypothalamic expressions of IL-1β,IL-6,TNF-α and Socs3 mRNA(P<0.01),and improved number and morphology of nerve cells revealed by TEM.The groups intervened with Jiaotai Pills,or Coptis chinensis,or metformin shared decreased body weight and FBG levels(P<0.05);decreased protein expressions of TLR4,MyD88,IKKβ and p-NF-κB(P<0.05);and decreased number of hypothalamic astrocytes and microglia(P<0.05).Additionally,decreased p-NF-κB protein expression was observed in the Cinnamomum cassia group(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Jiaotai Pills and their single composition drugs can improve high-fat diet-induced hypothalamic inflammation in obese mice.
3.Research on the development of entrustable professional activity indicators for residents in China: a systematic review

Objective:To systematically evaluate the current status of research on the development of indicators for entrustable professional activities (EPAs) of residents in China.Methods:We searched the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, Airiti Library, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases for literature on the development of EPA indicators for residents in China published between January 1, 2005 and February 28, 2025. Two researchers independently screened the literature and extracted data, followed by descriptive analysis. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool for expert opinion. Quantitative data were presented as medians (ranges) and qualitative data were presented as frequencies (percentages).Results:A total of eight articles were included, in which two general EPA indicator systems and six specialty-specific EPA indicator systems were developed for residents. The overall quality of the research was high, with the main shortcomings related to the methods used in the process of constructing the consensus indicators. The number of experts recruited ranged from 22 to 45, with 100.00% response rate, high authority coefficients (0.820-0.914), and high coordination coefficients (0.157-0.741). Most of the studies used literature reviews as one source for the indicator pool (8 studies, 100.00%), employed the Delphi method to reach consensus (6 studies, 75.00%), and provided inclusion criteria for the indicators (7 studies, 87.50%). However, only one study (12.50%) explored the practical application of the developed indicators, and none of the studies set indicator weights or conducted quality assessments. The number of EPA indicators developed ranged from 10 to 38 per study. The reporting of EPA indicators was included in most studies regarding titles (8 studies, 100.00%) and the expected levels of entrustment at various stages of training (6 studies, 75.00%), but the reporting on other aspects was lacking. Among the specialty-specific EPA indicators, 38.39% overlapped with the general EPAs indicators.Conclusions:The research on the development of EPA indicators for residents in China is still in its early stages, and there is room for improvement in methodological quality and reporting coverage. There is partial overlap between specialty-specific and general EPA indicators, failing to fully reflect the unique characteristics of different specialties.
4.An investigation of the current status of Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs for medical majors

Objective:To investigate the current status of Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs for medical majors, and to discuss the potential problems and development trends of this field.Methods:Related data were collected from the information platform of Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools by Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and the characteristics of Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs for medical majors were extracted for analysis. Categorical data were expressed as frequency (percentage), and continuous data were expressed as mean±standard deviation.Results:A total of 83 Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs for medical majors were included in the study, accounting for only 3.45% (83/2 406) of all programs. Chinese partners in these cooperative programs were mainly from East China (41 programs, 49.40%), while foreign partners were mainly from Europe (39 programs, 46.99%). The mean duration of these programs was (3.61±0.88) years, with an enrollment of (87.08±35.52) students. Most of the students were included in National General Higher Education Enrollment Plan (79 programs, 95.18%), and the main majors included nursing (39 programs, 46.99%), medical technology (19 programs, 22.89%), and clinical medicine (11 programs, 13.25%), with the main enrollment level of junior college (45 programs, 54.22%). Chinese partners in the cooperative programs mainly issued academic certificate (45 programs, 54.22%) or academic certificate plus degree certificate (36 programs, 43.37%), while most foreign partners did not issue such certificates (44 programs, 53.01%).Conclusions:There are several problems in Chinese-foreign cooperative education programs for medical majors, such as a limited number of programs, a significant regional difference, an imbalanced distribution of specialties, a low level of education, and inconsistency in issuance of certificates, which still requires further improvement and standardization. However, there are also high-level and high-quality programs for reference.
5.Clinicopathological analysis of 15 cases of odontogenic myxoma

Objective To investigate the clinicopathological features of odontogenic myxoma(OM).Methods The clinicopath-ologic data of 15 patients with odontogenic myxoma(OM)diagnosed by routine pathology in Stomatological Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University from January 2013 to June 2023 were retrospectively analyzed.Results(1)The most common cases were female(66.7%),20-40 years old(73.3%),mandible(60.0%)and posterior dental area(93.3%).(2)The characteristic imaging findings were multilocular cystic low-density radiography,resembling honey comb/tennis racket/soap bubble structures.(3)Microscopi-cally,star or spindle tumor cells can be seen scattered in the background of light blue mucoid matrix,and occasionally a few odonto-genic epithelial clusters.(4)In 15 odontogenic myxoma(OM)samples,①β-catenin was not expressed in 1 case of mucous type,par-tially or diffusely expressed in 6 cases,not expressed in 2 cases of fibrous type,partially or diffusely expressed in 6 cases;②CD34 and S100 were negative;③Ki-67 index was lower than 1%.(5)Of the 15 patients,only one relapsed,and the rest had a good prognosis.(6)Surgical treatment is the main treatment plan at present,and the appropriate surgical plan should be selected according to the size of the tumor,the scope of the lesion and the situation of the patient.Conclusion Although odontogenic myxoma is a benign tumor,it is locally invasive and recurrent.It is necessary to distinguish it from low-grade malignant myxosarcoma,chondromyxoid fibroma and odontogenic fibroma.Understanding of and familiarity with its clinicopathological features is helpful to its diagnosis and improving the prognosis of patients.

7.A Dual-Layer Network Dynamics Modeling and Simulation of Medical Surge Risk Diffusion Based on MATLAB and REPAST

Objective To explore the coupling mechanism between medical surge response resources and the spread of secondary risks during public health emergencies,as well as the effectiveness of relevant interventions.Methods Based on complex network theory,a dual-layer network model of medical resources and secondary events was constructed.The interactive feedback between medical resource status and secondary event risk,as well as the effects of network structure,were analyzed through MATLAB simulations,REPAST agent-based modeling,and mean-field analysis.Results Simulation and prediction results show that an increase in first-layer resource-deficient nodes significantly raises the activation rate and transmission speed of secondary events,while the clustering and spread of secondary events in the second layer,in turn,intensify resource depletion,creating a negative feedback loop.Mean-field analysis indicates a nonlinear positive correlation between the adequacy of medical resources and the likelihood of secondary events.Network structure analysis reveals that when the average node degree exceeds 8,resource allocation efficiency improves markedly.Conclusion There exists a dynamic coupling and bidirectional feedback relationship between medical resource status and secondary event risks.Enhancing the flexible allocation and responsiveness of medical resources,improving multi-sectoral collaborative monitoring and coordinated regulation,optimizing network connectivity and coordination mechanisms for resource distribution,and establishing dynamic monitoring and tiered early warning systems are key strategies for strengthening the resilience of healthcare systems and effectively containing the spread of secondary events.

9.Textual study of Baihuasheshecao (Hedyotis diffusa).

Baihuasheshecao(Hedyotis diffusa) is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine derived from the whole herb of H. diffusa and has been widely utilized in folk medicine. It possesses anti-tumor, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, making it one of the frequently used herbs in TCM clinical practice. However, Shuixiancao(H. corymbosa) and Xianhuaercao(H. tenelliflora), species of the same genus, are often used as substitutes for Baihuasheshecao. To substantiate the medicinal basis of Baihuasheshecao, this study systematically reviewed classical herbal texts and modern literature, examining its nomenclature, botanical origin, harvesting, processing, properties, meridian tropism, pharmacological effects, and clinical applications. The results indicate that Baihuasheshecao was initially recorded as "Shuixiancao" in Preface to the Indexes to the Great Chinese Botany(Zhi Wu Ming Shi Tu Kao). Based on its morphological characteristics and habitat description, it was identified as H. diffusa in the Rubiaceae family. Subsequent records predominantly refer to it as Baihuasheshecao as its official name. In most regions, Baihuasheshecao is recognized as the authentic medicinal material, distinct from Shuixiancao and Xianhuaercao. Baihuasheshecao is harvested in late summer and early autumn, and the dried whole plant, including its roots, is used medicinally. The standard processing method involves cutting. It is known for its effects in clearing heat, removing toxins, reducing swelling and pain, and promoting diuresis to resolve abscesses. Initially, it was mainly used for treating appendicitis, intestinal abscesses, and venomous snake bites, and later, it became a treatment for cancer. The excavation of its clinical value followed a process in which overseas Chinese introduced the herb from Chinese folk medicine to other countries. After its unique anti-cancer effects were recognized abroad, it was reintroduced to China and gradually became a crucial TCM for cancer treatment. The findings of this study help clarify the historical and contemporary uses of Baihuasheshecao, providing literature support and a scientific basis for its rational development and precise clinical application.
