ObjectiveIn nature, objects cast shadows due to illumination, forming the basis for stereoscopic perception. Birds need to adapt to changes in lighting (meaning they can recognize stereoscopic shapes even when shadows look different) to accurately perceive different three-dimensional forms. However, how neurons in the key visual brain area in birds handle these lighting changes remains largely unreported. In this study, pigeons (Columba livia) were used as subjects to investigate how neurons in pigeon’s ventrolateral mesopallium (MVL) represent stereoscopic shapes consistently, regardless of changes in lighting. MethodsVisual cognitive training combined with neuronal recording was employed. Pigeons were first trained to discriminate different stereoscopic shapes (concave/convex). We then tested whether and how light luminance angle and surface appearance of the stereoscopic shapes affect their recognition accuracy, and further verify whether the results rely on specify luminance color. Simultaneously, neuronal firing activity of neurons was recorded with multiple electrode array implanted from the MVL during the presentation of difference shapes. The response was finally analyzed how selectively they responded to different stereoscopic shapes and whether their selectivity was affected by the changes of luminance condition (like lighting angle) or surface look. Support vector machine (SVM) models were trained on neuronal population responses recorded under one condition (light luminance angle of 45°) and used to decode responses under other conditions (light luminance angle of 135°, 225°, 315°) to verify the invariance of responses to different luminance conditions. ResultsBehavioral results from 6 pigeons consistently showed that the pigeons could reliably identify the core 3D shape (over 80% accuracy), and this ability wasn’t affected by changes in light angle or surface appearance. Statistical analysis of 88 recorded neurons from 6 pigeons revealed that 83% (73/88) showed strong selectivity for specific 3D shapes (selectivity index>0.3), and responses to convex shapes were consistently stronger than to concave shapes. These shape-selective responses remained stable across changes in light angle and surface appearance. Neural patterns were consistent under both blue and orange lighting. The decoding accuracy achieves above 70%, suggesting stable responses under different conditions (e.g., different lighting angles or surface appearance). ConclusionNeurons in the pigeon MVL maintain a consistent neural encoding pattern for different stereoscopic shapes, unaffected by illumination or surface appearance. This ensures stable object recognition by pigeons in changing visual environments. Our findings provide new physiological evidence for understanding how birds achieve stable perception (“invariant neural representations”) while coping with variations in the visual field.

To investigate the antimicrobial resistance of Enterococci isolated from 596 anal swabs, feces and environmental samples were collected from pig, cattle, chicken and quail farms in Chang-sha,Hunan Province,Enterococci were isolated and identified by mass spectrometry. The minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs)of 10 antimicrobial agents were determined by AGAR diffusion method.Whole genome sequencing(WGS)was used to detect the distribution of multilocus se-quence typing(ST),drug resistance genes and virulence genes.A total of 272 strains of Enterococ-cus were isolated(45.6%).The isolates were resistant to cefoxitin(68.9%)and cefotiofur(58.5%),followed by trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(52.2%),vancomycin(4.4%),and linezolid(13.6%).In this study, six linezolid highly resistant Enterococci isolates were analyzed by whole genome sequencing to explore the transmission mechanism of linezolid resistance because linezolid is forbidden to be used in aquaculture.ST403(4/6),ST16(1/6)and ST476(1/6)were the most common ST types, which all originated from the same farm.Three oxazolidinone resistance genes(cfr, poxtA and optrA)were found in all 21 strains. One strain(Ecc60)carried all three oxazo-lidinone resistance genes, but none of them were located on the plasmid.tet(M),aph(3')-Ⅲ,and lsa(A)were found in all six Enterococcus isolates.Interestingly, the present study is the first to i-dentify enterococci carrying the optrA gene in quail fecal samples. The analysis of the genetic envi-ronment of oxazolidinone resistance genes showed that the genetic environment of cfr(D),poxtA and optrA of isolates from the same farm was similar.A total of 19 virulence genes were detected in 6 isolates,of which 12 genes(ElrA,SrtA,ace,agg,cCF10,cOB1,cad,camE,ebpA,ebpC,efaAfs,tpx)were carried by all 6 isolates, and the types of virulence genes in strains from the same farm were extremely similar. The results showed that the drug resistance of Enterococci iso-lated from the fish farms in Changsha was serious, and the resistance rate to linezolid, which was prohibited in the fish farms, was high. The oxazolidinone resistance gene loci were accompanied by other resistance genes, especially the florfenicol resistance gene(FexA),which may be related to the abuse of florfenicol in the fish farms.

Aim To investigate the role of FRMD4A in autophagy of placental trophoblast cells in preeclampsia(PE).Methods The placental tissues and clinical data of normal pregnancy and PE were obtained, and the histopathological changes were observed by HE staining. An in vitro model of hypoxia-induced HTR-8/SVneo trophoblast cells was established. The expres-sions of LC3B Ⅱ/Ⅰ and p62 in placental tissues and hypoxic cell models were analyzed by Western blot. The expression of FRMD4A was detected by qRT-PCR,Western blot and immunofluorescence, and the correlation between the expression level of FRMD4A and the clinical characteristics of the subjects was ana-lyzed by Pearson correlation analysis.Hypoxia induced trophoblast cells were transfected with si-FRMD4A,and the expression of LC3 B Ⅱ/Ⅰ and p62 was analyzed by Western blot. Results Compared with the normal group, the expression of LC3B Ⅱ/Ⅰ in PE placental tissues and hypoxia-induced trophoblast models was significantly upregulated, while the expression of p62 was significantly downregulated.Meanwhile, the ex-pression of FRMD4A increased significantly.Moreo-ver,its expression was positively correlated with the maternal systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pres-sure,and platelet count, but negatively correlated with the neonatal weight(P<0.01).In addition,hypoxia-induced trophoblast cells transfected with si-FRMD4A showed a significant decrease in LC3B Ⅱ/Ⅰ and an increase in p62 expression. Conclusions The expres-sion of FRMD4A is upregulated in PE placenta and hy-poxia-induced trophoblast cell model.Interfering with it can significantly hinder the autophagy process of trophoblast cells, suggesting that it may serve as a po-tential molecular target to participate in the pathologi-cal process of PE.

Objective:To investigate the immuno-inflammatory regulatory effects of the Qing Gan San Jie Xiao Ying Formula(QGSJXYF)on Hashimoto's thyroiditis(HT)by modulating thyroid cell-derived exosomes to provide experi-mental evidence for its immunomodulatory mechanisms.Methods:Nthy-ori-3-1 thyroid cells were treated with QGSJXYF-medicated serum, with untreated cells serving as controls.Exosomes from both groups were extracted and analyzed using nanoparticle tracking analysis(NTA),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and Western blot to assess concentration, size distribution, morphology, and the expression of characteristic exosomal markers. An inflammatory model of human T lymphocytes(H9)was established and co-incubated with normal exosomes(EXO-C group)or QGSJXYF-treated exosomes(EXO-T group). The levels of inflammatory cytokines in H9 cells were measured using Western blot(WB)and ELISA.Results:Exosome characterization showed that the particle concentration of Nthy-ori-3-1 cell-derived exosomes in both the control and QGSJXYF groups ranged from 1×109 to 1×1011/mL,with particle diameters between 80~300 nm.The exosomes exhibited a typical spherical or cup-shaped morphology with positive expression of TSG101,CD63,and HSP70.Compared with the inflammation model group and the EXO-C group, the EXO-T group significantly reduced the intracellular expression of IL-17A protein in H9 cells(P<0.05)and suppressed IL-17 and IL-6 levels in the cell supernatant(P<0.01).Conclusion:QGSJXYF may exert its anti-inflammatory and thyroid-protective effects by modulating the functional state of thyroid cell-derived exosomes, regulating the inflamma-tory microenvironment, and inhibiting the expression of inflammatory cytokines associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-associated death globally. Liver transplantation (LT) has emerged as a key treatment for patients with HCC, and the Milan criteria have been adopted as the cornerstone of the selection policy. To allow more patients to benefit from LT, a number of expanded criteria have been proposed, many of which use radiologic morphological characteristics with larger and more tumors as surrogates to predict outcomes. Other groups developed indices incorporating biological variables and dynamic markers of response to locoregional treatment. These expanded selection criteria achieved satisfactory results with limited liver supplies. In addition, a number of prognostic models have been developed using clinicopathological characteristics, imaging radiomics features, genetic data, and advanced techniques such as artificial intelligence. These models could improve prognostic estimation, establish surveillance strategies, and bolster long-term outcomes in patients with HCC. In this study, we reviewed the latest findings and achievements regarding the selection criteria and post-transplant prognostic models for LT in patients with HCC.

Progress in Biochemistry and Biophysics 2025;52(2):310-333
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a central neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive decline and memory impairment in clinical. Currently, there are no effective treatments for AD. In recent years, a variety of therapeutic approaches from different perspectives have been explored to treat AD. Although the drug therapies targeted at the clearance of amyloid β-protein (Aβ) had made a breakthrough in clinical trials, there were associated with adverse events. Neuroinflammation plays a crucial role in the onset and progression of AD. Continuous neuroinflammatory was considered to be the third major pathological feature of AD, which could promote the formation of extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles. At the same time, these toxic substances could accelerate the development of neuroinflammation, form a vicious cycle, and exacerbate disease progression. Reducing neuroinflammation could break the feedback loop pattern between neuroinflammation, Aβ plaque deposition and Tau tangles, which might be an effective therapeutic strategy for treating AD. Traditional Chinese herbs such as Polygonum multiflorum and Curcuma were utilized in the treatment of AD due to their ability to mitigate neuroinflammation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and indomethacin had been shown to reduce the level of inflammasomes in the body, and taking these drugs was associated with a low incidence of AD. Biosynthetic nanomaterials loaded with oxytocin were demonstrated to have the capability to anti-inflammatory and penetrate the blood-brain barrier effectively, and they played an anti-inflammatory role via sustained-releasing oxytocin in the brain. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells could reduce neuroinflammation and inhibit the activation of microglia. The secretion of mesenchymal stem cells could not only improve neuroinflammation, but also exert a multi-target comprehensive therapeutic effect, making it potentially more suitable for the treatment of AD. Enhancing the level of TREM2 in microglial cells using gene editing technologies, or application of TREM2 antibodies such as Ab-T1, hT2AB could improve microglial cell function and reduce the level of neuroinflammation, which might be a potential treatment for AD. Probiotic therapy, fecal flora transplantation, antibiotic therapy, and dietary intervention could reshape the composition of the gut microbiota and alleviate neuroinflammation through the gut-brain axis. However, the drugs of sodium oligomannose remain controversial. Both exercise intervention and electromagnetic intervention had the potential to attenuate neuroinflammation, thereby delaying AD process. This article focuses on the role of drug therapy, gene therapy, stem cell therapy, gut microbiota therapy, exercise intervention, and brain stimulation in improving neuroinflammation in recent years, aiming to provide a novel insight for the treatment of AD by intervening neuroinflammation in the future.
