Objective:
To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of the co-occurrence of elevated blood pressure and depressive symptoms among junior and senior high school students in Anhui Province, so as to provide evidence for comprehensive interventions on physical and mental health among adolescents.
Methods:
From September to December 2024, a multi stage random cluster sampling method was used to select 103 225 junior and senior high school students from 16 prefecture level cities in Anhui Province. Data were collected through questionnaire surveys and physical measurements. Elevated blood pressure was determined according to the Reference of Screening for Elevated Blood Pressure among Children and Adolescents Aged 7-18 Years. Depressive symptoms among middle school students were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Chi-square test, Chi-square test for trend, and multivariate Logistic regression model were used to analyze the risk factors for the co-occurrence of elevated blood pressure and depressive symptoms.
Results:
The detection rate of elevated blood pressure was 15.22%, the detection rate of depressive symptoms was 18.56%, and the co-occurrence rate of the two conditions was 2.67% among junior and senior high school students. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that after controlling for gender, school stage, household registration, and overweight and obesity status, compared with those who don t drink sugary drink and eat fried food, and get enough sleep, sugar sweetened beverage intake <1 and ≥1 time/d( OR =1.28,1.61), fried food consumption ≥1 time/d( OR =1.37), and insufficient sleep ( OR =1.54) were all associated with an increased risk of the co-occurrence of elevated blood pressure and depressive symptoms(all P <0.05). Daily fresh vegetable intake ≥1 time/d( OR =0.78) and fresh fruit intake ≥1 time/d( OR =0.85) were both associated with a decreased risk of the co-occurrence(both P <0.05). Compared with students who did not eat breakfast, students who ate breakfast sometimes and every day ( OR =0.62,0.36) had a lower co-occurrence risk(both P < 0.05). Junior and senior high school students with daily outdoor activity duration≥1 h ( OR =0.81) had a lower risk of the co-occurrence of elevated blood pressure and depressive symptoms ( P <0.05).
Conclusions
Sugar sweetened beverage drink and fried food consumption, inadequate consumption of fresh vegetables, fruits and breakfast, lack of outdoor activity, and insufficient sleep are risk factors for the co-occurrence of elevated blood pressure and depressive symptoms among junior and senior high school students in Anhui Province. It is necessary to establish school health promotion strategies integrating nutrition, exercise and sleep management as intervention targets to reduce the co-occurrence risk of elevated blood pressure and depressive symptoms among junior and senior high school students.

AIM: To investigate variation patterns of corneal biomechanical parameters and binocular symmetry among children of different genders aged 8-16 years.METHODS:A retrospective study was conducted, and children who underwent optometric examinations at the ophthalmology department of our hospital were enrolled between January 2022 and December 2024. Measurements included the flat keratometry(K1), steep keratometry(K2), and mean curvature(Km)of the anterior corneal surface, horizontal visible iris diameter(HVID), central corneal thickness(CCT), corneal endothelial cell density(CECD), average cell size(ACS), coefficient of variation(CV), and hexagonality(HEX). Corneal parameters and binocular differences were compared between genders and across age groups.RESULTS:A total of 621 children(1 242 eyes)were enrolled in this study, including 284 males(568 eyes), 337 females(674 eyes), 528 children aged 8-12 years(1 056 eyes), and 93 children aged 13-16 years(186 eyes). In children aged 8-16 years, the K1, K2, Km and CV of both eyes, as well as the interocular CCT differences in boys were significantly lower than those in girls(all P<0.05), while the HVID and HEX of both eyes, as well as the CCT of the left eye in boys were significantly higher than those in girls(all P<0.05). Children aged 8-12 years had significantly higher K1, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes, and significantly lower ACS in both eyes than those aged 13-16 years(all P<0.05). K1, K2, Km, CECD and HEX in both eyes were negatively correlated with age(P<0.05); ACS in both eyes was positively correlated with age(P<0.001); K1 and Km of the right eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the right eye(P<0.05), and K1 and CCT of the left eye were positively correlated with the CECD of the left eye(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Significant gender differences exist in corneal parameters among children aged 8 to 16 years, while binocular symmetry remained stable.

Objective:To examine the effect of cumulative hemoglobin A 1c (HbA 1c) levels and insulin dosage on insulin resistance (IR)-related metabolic disturbances in newly diagnosed patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Methods:This retrospective cohort study included T1D patients admitted to the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from November 2015 to March 2023. Clinical data collected comprised age, sex, disease duration, insulin dosage, body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, HbA 1c levels, islet autoantibodies, and fasting blood lipid profiles. IR-related metabolic disturbances assessed were overweight, obesity, central obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Cox regression and cluster analyses were applied to assess the influence of cumulative HbA 1c and insulin dosage on these metabolic disturbances. Results:A total of 235 patients were included, with 97 males (41.3%) and 138 females (58.7%). The median age was 19.8 (13.3, 31.1) years, and the median follow-up duration was 30.8 (20.8, 45.6) months. During follow-up, 41.6% (72/173) of patients developed IR-related metabolic disturbances. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that a cumulative HbA 1c ≥60 mmol/mol was an independent risk factor for any IR-related metabolic disturbance [ HR (95% CI): 1.739 (1.067-2.835) ] and for triglyceride abnormalities [ HR (95% CI): 3.277 (1.176-9.127)]. Additionally, a cumulative insulin dosage ≥0.5 U·kg -1·d -1 was identified as an independent risk factor for overweight, obesity, or central obesity [ HR (95% CI): 2.374 (1.059-5.323)]. Cluster analysis further identified that patients with higher levels of cumulative HbA 1c and insulin dosage, particularly those with adolescent-onset diabetes, had the highest likelihood of developing hypertension ( HR=2.460, 95% CI 1.008-6.005), overweight/obesity/central obesity ( HR=2.707, 95% CI 1.062-6.900), triglyceride abnormalities ( HR=5.495, 95% CI 1.842-16.391), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol abnormalities ( HR=11.054, 95% CI 4.107-29.751), and any IR-related metabolic disturbance ( HR=5.833, 95% CI 2.602-13.077). Conclusions:Elevated cumulative HbA 1c and insulin dosage levels in T1D patients are associated with an increased risk of developing IR-related metabolic disturbances. These findings underscore the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies tailored to this population.

Objective:To determine the epidemiological characteristics of human bocavirus (HBoV) in children with acute respiratory infections (ARI) in Bengbu City, Anhui Province, in 2024.Methods:Nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected from 269 children with ARI in Bengbu City, Anhui Province, in 2024. Seventeen respiratory pathogens were screened using quantitative fluorescence PCR. For HBoV-positive samples, the VP1/VP2 structural gene fragments of HBoV were amplified and sequenced for genetic evolutionary analysis. Results:Among the 269 nasopharyngeal swab samples from children with ARI, the overall detection rate of respiratory pathogens was 48.33% (103/269). The top three pathogens with the highest detection rates were: Influenza A virus (FluA): 10.04% (27/269), Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): 8.18% (22/269), Human bocavirus (HBoV): 7.43% (20/269). The age distribution of HBoV-infected children showed that the detection rate was highest in the 0-2 years age group (50%, 10/20), followed by the 3-5 years age group (25%, 5/20) and the over 6 years age group (25%, 5/20). However, there was no statistically significant difference in viral detection rates among the age groups. Genetic evolutionary analysis based on VP1/VP2 revealed that all 13 HBoV strains were of the HBoV-1 genotype. Conclusions:HBoV is one of the major pathogens causing ARI in children in Bengbu City, Anhui Province, in 2024, with HBoV-1 being the predominant genotype. Additionally, infants aged 0-2 years are the most susceptible population to HBoV infection.
