1.End-Effector Robot-Assisted Gait Training in Quadruple Amputees: Two Case Reports

Quadruple amputation, defined as the loss of all four limbs, is an exceptionally rare condition. Conventional gait training is particularly challenging in this population because the absence of upper limbs limits the ability to grasp assistive devices that are essential for maintaining balance and stability during walking. End-effector robot-assisted gait training offers an alternative rehabilitation strategy that enables upright mobility and task-specific gait training for patients who experience substantial difficulty performing conventional gait training. This approach provides safe, repetitive, and hands-free gait training for individuals with quadruple amputation, resulting in measurable improvements in balance, ground reaction force, and functional mobility. We report two cases of successful amputee gait rehabilitation using an end-effector–type gait robot in two females (aged 72 and 51 years) with quadruple amputation.
2.Real‑world data on long‑term outcomes in patients with T‑cell lymphomas: a nationwide study of Korea

Background:
Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a rare and heterogeneous group of aggressive malignancies.This study aimed to comprehensively analyze patients diagnosed with PTCLs in Korea, evaluating treatment outcomes, including transplantation and long-term survival.Patients and methods In this retrospective study, clinical data from the National Health Insurance Service on patients with PTCL were investigated. Most patients diagnosed with mature T-cell lymphomas and natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphomas between January 2005 and December 2022 in Korea were included. Incidence rates of each subtype and survival outcomes of both treated and untreated patients were analyzed.
Results:
A total of 12,573 patients were analyzed. PTCL not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) and extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma were the most frequently diagnosed, followed by angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL). Compared to the general population, the relative survival rate was highest in anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma. With a median follow-up of 6.7 years, the 3-year and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates among treated patients were 44.0% and 39.5%, while the overall survival (OS) rates were 48.6% and 43.5%, respectively. Kaplan–Meier survival curves indicated that patients who added etoposide to the CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) regimen showed improved PFS and OS. In addition, autologous stem cell transplantation significantly improved PFS and OS, particularly in the PTCL-NOS and AITL subtypes.
Conclusion
Patients who received etoposide-containing CHOP-based regimens had improved treatment outcomes.The survival benefits of consolidative autologous stem cell transplantation (auto-SCT) were evident in PTCL-NOS and AITL.
3.Influence of Emotional Intelligence of Experienced Nurses on Nursing Managerial Competence:Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Communication Competence

To identify the mediating effect of the communication competence on the relationship between emotional intelligence and nursing managerial competence among experienced nurses.
Methods:
A total of 186 nurses with more than 10 years of experience working in six general hospitals participated. Data were collected using a selfreported questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS Statistics ver. 23.0 and SPSS Process Macro for descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Scheffé test, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis, and bootstrapping method.
Results:
Nursing managerial competence was significantly associated with emotional intelligence (r=.32, p<.001) and communication competence (r=.42, p<.001). Additionally, communication competence had a complete mediating effect on the relationship between emotional intelligence and nursing managerial competence (indirect effect=0.45, boot SE=0.11, 95% boot CI=[0.25, 0.67]).
Conclusion
Strategies for enhancing the experienced nurses’ nursing managerial competence should be considered to improve communication competence as well as emotional intelligence and develop nursing managerial competency-related education programs by career stages. In particular, the nursing management competency-related education should focus on improving human resource management and planning competences.

7.Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome with Classical Subtype in a Cat

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare genetic disorder in dogs and cats and has been mostly reported in purebred cats. In this study, we report a case of a 1-year-old castrated male Korean shorthair cat, who presented with multiple small skin tears and bruises distributed over the entire trunk area. The cat’s skin was hyperextensible and easily torn with gentle touch. The skin extensibility index of the cat was 25%, indicating the possibility of EDS. The cat exhibited no signs of pruritus or inflammation, and no underlying disease was found.However, radiography revealed hip joint subluxation and arthritis. Following this, biopsy of the lacerated skin was performed. Histopathological examination of the skin revealed that in the dermis adjacent to the lesions, the collagen fibers were irregular in size and width, with a slightly thinner epidermis, and increased interfibrillar spaces containing low numbers of scattered well-differentiated fibroblasts and mast cells. Histopathological examination of the skin confirmed EDS. The symptoms observed in the cat, including skin hyperextensibility, multiple bruising, hip joint subluxation, and arthritis, corresponded to the classical subtype of EDS in humans. Thus, this study is a rare report of a classical EDS case in a Korean shorthair cat. This study suggests that skin extensibility index and biopsy are useful diagnostic procedures for confirming EDS in animals until a more definitive genetic test is established.
8.Comparison of Proportional Mortality Between Korean Atomic Bomb Survivors and the General Population During 1992–2019

Background:
Atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in August 1945 were estimated to have killed approximately 70,000 Koreans. In Japan, studies on the health status and mortality of atomic bomb survivors compared with the non-exposed population have been conducted. However, there have been no studies related to the mortality of Korean atomic bomb survivors. Therefore, we aimed to study the cause of death of atomic bomb survivors compared to that of the general population.
Methods:
Of 2,299 atomic bomb survivors registered with the Korean Red Cross, 2,176 were included in the study. In the general population, the number of deaths by age group was calculated from 1992 to 2019, and 6,377,781 individuals were assessed. Causes of death were categorized according to the Korean Standard Classification of Diseases. To compare the proportional mortality between the two groups, the P value for the ratio test was confirmed, and the Cochran-Armitage trend test and χ 2 test were performed to determine the cause of death according to the distance from the hypocenter.
Results:
Diseases of the circulatory system were the most common cause of death (25.4%), followed by neoplasms (25.1%) and diseases of the respiratory system (10.6%) in atomic bomb survivors who died between 1992 and 2019. The proportional mortality associated with respiratory diseases, nervous system diseases, and other diseases among atomic bomb survivors was higher than that of the general population. Of the dead people between 1992 and 2019, the age at death of survivors who were exposed at a close distance was younger than those who were exposed at a greater distance.
Conclusion
Overall, proportional mortality of respiratory diseases and nervous system diseases was high in atomic bomb survivors, compared with the general population. Further studies on the health status of Korean atomic bomb survivors are needed.
9.Cohort Study Protocol: A Cohort of Korean Atomic Bomb Survivors and Their Offspring

In 1945, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Approximately 70 000 Koreans are estimated to have been exposed to radiation from atomic bombs at that time. After Korea’s Liberation Day, approximately 23 000 of these people returned to Korea. To investigate the long-term health and hereditary effects of atomic bomb exposure on the offspring, cohort studies have been conducted on atomic bomb survivors in Japan. This study is an ongoing cohort study to determine the health status of Korean atomic bomb survivors and investigate whether any health effects were inherited by their offspring. Atomic bomb survivors are defined by the Special Act On the Support for Korean Atomic Bomb Victims, and their offspring are identified by participating atomic bomb survivors. As of 2024, we plan to recruit 1500 atomic bomb survivors and their offspring, including 200 trios with more than 300 people. Questionnaires regarding socio-demographic factors, health behaviors, past medical history, laboratory tests, and pedigree information comprise the data collected to minimize survival bias. For the 200 trios, whole-genome analysis is planned to identify de novo mutations in atomic bomb survivors and to compare the prevalence of de novo mutations with trios in the general population. Active follow-up based on telephone surveys and passive follow-up with linkage to the Korean Red Cross, National Health Insurance Service, death registry, and Korea Central Cancer Registry data are ongoing. By combining pedigree information with the findings of trio-based whole-genome analysis, the results will elucidate the hereditary health effects of atomic bomb exposure.
