Malaria, a parasitic disease caused by infection with the species of Plasmodium and transmitted by Anopheles mosquito bites, is one of the major public health challenges that seriously threaten human health. Malaria parasites present diverse immune escape strategies to escape from the recognition and clearance of the host immune system, which poses a great challenge to the malaria control programme. This review presents the advances in the mechanisms underlying the immune escape of Plasmodium, including antigenic variation, epigenetic regulation, antagonism against IgM antibody, activation of the cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate (GMP-AMP) synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) signaling, suppression of splenic immune functions, and molecular camouflage, so as to provide insights into development of malaria vaccines and antimalarial agents and formulation of the malaria control strategy.

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps（CRSwNP） represents a prevalent inflammatory disorder, which is often accompanied by nasal congestion, mucopurulent discharge, olfactory dysfunction, dizziness, and headache. Staphylococcus aureus（SA）, a predominant opportunistic pathogen within the sinonasal microenvironment, has been implicated in modulating the pathogenesis and progression of CRSwNP through multifaceted mechanisms. The physiological activities of SA-dependent quorum-sensing system and biofilm in the nasal microenvironment, including interactions with host, fungi, viruses, and other bacteria, as well as the effects of important superantigens secreted by SA on the microenvironment and immune barrier, are briefly reviewed in this article. These insights provide theoretical foundations for elucidating CRSwNP mechanisms and advancing clinical therapeutic strategies.

Due to the wide application of silver-containing dressings and silver-coated medical devices in clinical treatment; the extensive use of antibacterial agents and heavy metal agents in feed factories, Escherichia coli has formed the tolerance to silver ions. To systematically understand the known silver ion resistance mechanisms of E. coli, this article reviews the complex regulatory network and various physiological mechanisms of silver ion tolerance in E. coli, including the regulation of outer membrane porins, energy metabolism modulation, the role of efflux systems, motility regulation, and silver ion reduction. E. coli reduces the influx of silver ions by missing or mutating outer membrane porins such as OmpR, OmpC, and OmpF. It adapts to high concentrations of silver ions by altering the expression of ArcA/B and enhances the efflux capacity of silver ions under high-concentration silver stress via the endogenous Cus system and exogenous Sil system. Furthermore, the motility of bacteria is related to silver tolerance. E. coli has the ability to reduce silver ions, thereby alleviating the oxidative stress induced by silver ions. These findings provide a new perspective for understanding the formation and spread of bacterial tolerance and provide directions for the development of next-generation silver-based antimicrobials and therapies.

Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and spatial distribution characteristics of Clonorchis sinensis human infections in Guangdong Province from 2016 to 2022, so as to provide insights into formulation of the clonorchiasis control measures in the province. Methods Xinhui District of Jiangmen City, Longmen County of Huizhou City and Wengyuan County of Shaoguan City in Guangdong Province were selected as fixed surveillance sites for human clonorchiasis from 2016 to 2022, and additional 10% to 15% counties (districts) endemic for clonorchiasis were sampled from Guangdong Province as mobile surveillance sites each year from 2016 to 2022. A village (community) was randomly selected from each surveillance site according to the geographical orientations of east, west, south, north and middle, and subjects were randomly sampled from each village (community). C. sinensis eggs were detected in subjects’ stool samples using the Kato-Katz technique, and the prevalence and intensity of C. sinensis infections were calculated. In addition, subjects’ gender, age, ethnicity, educational level and occupation were collected. The Guangdong Provincial 1:1 million electronic map in vector format was downloaded from the National Geomatics Center of China, and kernel density analysis and spatial autocorrelation analysis of C. sinensis human infections in Guangdong Province from 2016 to 2022 were performed using the software ArcGIS 10.7. Results A total of 153 188 residents were tested for C. sinensis infections in Guangdong Province from 2016 to 2022, including 75 596 men (49.35%) and 77 592 women (50.65%), and there were 5 369 residents infected with C. sinensis, with 3.50% overall prevalence of infections. The prevalence rates of severe, moderate and mild C. sinensis infections were 0.76%, 7.26% and 91.97% among C. sinensis-infected residents in Guangdong Province from 2016 to 2022, and there were age-, gender-, ethnicity-, occupation- and educational level-specific prevalence of C. sinensis human infections (χ² = 2 578.31, 637.33, 52.22, 2 893.28 and 1 139.33, all P values < 0.05). Global spatial autocorrelation analysis showed a cluster in the prevalence of C. sinensis human infections in Guangdong Province (Moran’s I = 0.63, Z = 27.31, P < 0.05). Kernel density analysis showed that the prevalence of C. sinensis human infections with a high kernel density in Guangdong Province was mainly distributed along the Zhujiang River basin in Pearl River Delta areas, followed by in eastern and northern Guangdong Province. In addition, local spatial autocorrelation analysis identified 73 high-high clusters of the prevalence of C. sinensis human infections in Guangdong Province. Conclusions The prevalence of C. sinensis human infections was high in Guangdong Province from 2016 to 2022, and mild infection was predominant among all clonorchiasis cases, with spatial clusters identified in the prevalence of C. sinensis human infections. Targeted clonorchiasis control measures are required among high-risk populations and areas.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between M2-polarized macrophages and early response in multiple myeloma and its molecular mechanism. Methods: Two hundred and forty bone marrow biopsy tissue were collected and M2-polarized macrophages were stained by anti-CD163 monoclonal antibody. In vitro M2-polarized macrophages were derived from human peripheral blood mononuclear cell or THP-1 cells and identified by flow cytometry. Two myeloma cell lines RPMI 8226 and U266 were co-cultured with M2 macrophages using a transwell system. We measured myeloma cells proliferation through CCK-8 method and the pro-inflammatory cytokines expression (TNF-α and IL-6) by ELISA. Real time PCR was applied to measure chemokines (CCL2 and CCL3) , chemokine receptors (CCR2, CCR5) , VEGF and their receptors. In addition, flow cytometry was used to analyze the apoptosis of myeloma cells induced by dexamethasone. Results: ①Patients with high percentage of M2 macrophage involvement in bone marrow showed poorer response (23.9% versus 73.0%, χ²=60.31, P<0.001). ② In vitro the proliferation of RPMI 8226 cells (P=0.005 at 24 h, P=0.020 at 36 h) or U266 myeloma cells (P= 0.030 at 24h, P=0.020 at 36h) co-cultured with M2-polarized macrophages was higher than control group. ③In vitro the apoptotic rate of RPMI 8226 cells (29.0% versus 71.0%, t=4.97, P=0.008) or U266 myeloma cells (24.9% versus 67.7%, t=6.99, P=0.002) co-cultured with M2-polarized macrophages was lower than control group. ④ In vitro M2-polarized macrophages promoted myeloma cells secreting higher level of IL-6, TNF-α and higher expression of CCL2, CCL3, CCR2, CCR5, VEGFA, VEGFR-1,-2 compared with the non-macrophage co-culture system. Conclusion M2-polarized macrophages promote myeloma cells proliferation and inhibit apoptosis through a very complex mechanism involving pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α, chemokines and related receptors such as CCL2, CCL3, CCR2, CCR3, and VEGF as well as related VEGFR.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX), as its essential advantages of high efficiency and low cost, is a promising novel biological nitrogen elimination process with attractive application prospects. Over the past two decades, many processes based on the ANAMMOX reaction have been continuously studied and applied to practical engineering, with the perspective of reaching 100 full-scale installations in operation worldwide by 2014. Our review summarizes various forms of ANAMMOX processes, including partial nitritation-ANAMMOX, completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite, oxygen limited autotrophic nitrification and denitrification, denitrifying ammonium oxidation, aerobic deammonification, simultaneous partial nitrification, ANAMMOX and denitrification, single-stage nitrogen removal using ANAMMOX and partial nitritation. We also compare the operating conditions for one-stage and two-stage processes and summarize the obstacles and countermeasures in engineering application of ANAMMOX systems, such as moving bed biofilm reactor, sequencing batch reactor and granular sludge reactor. Finally, we discuss the future research and application direction, which should focus on the optimization of operating conditions and applicability of the process to the actual wastewater, especially on automated control and the impact of special wastewater composition on process performance.

This article assessed the genetic relationship and genetic diversity in Dioscorea alata. Twenty samples were examined to identify their original plants, and analyzed by ISSR markers. The results showed that 20 samples were classified into three different plants, such as D. alata, D. persimilis, and D. fordii. There was significant difference in genetic similarity coefficient between D. alata and D. persimi as well as D. fordii. There was distinct differences in D. alata, the genetic similarity coefficient was resulted from 0.672 9 to 0.990 7. With UPGMA clustering method, 16 samples of D. alata could be divided into 4 groups. After comparing samples with the phenotypic characteristics of original plants, it showed that the color and the number of tuber were the most important characteristics of judging the genetic relationship of D. alata. It is concluded that the genetic variation of Dioscorea spp is significant, especially the genetic diversity in D. alata were in a high level. This article supplied a molecular biologic support for distinguishing Dioscorea spp, and also provided basis for breeding of D. alata.
