A method for determining volatile organic compounds(VOCs)in environmental air samples using thermal desorption-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry(TD-GC/MS)was developed. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of 103 kinds of VOC species were achieved under the optimal conditions such as cold trap desorption temperature and time during the thermal desorption process, combined with full-scan data acquisition using an electron impact ionization source. With a sampling volume of 3.0 L,the method exhibited detection limits of 0.1-0.5 μg/m3 and quantitation limits of 0.4-2.0 μg/m3.At spiked concentrations of 1.0 μg/m3 and 10.0 μg/m3,the recoveries ranged from 60.5%to 118.0%,with relative standard deviations varying from 2.37%to 18.70%.Furthermore,all target compounds showed correlation coefficients(R2)exceeding 0.997 across their respective concentration ranges, demonstrating that the method had high accuracy and reliability.Using this method,a study was conducted to investigate the spatial variations and source apportionment of VOCs across urban, suburban, and rural sites in Anyang,a representative industrial city, during the summer season. The results revealed significant differences in VOC concentrations among the three regions. The urban site recorded the highest concentration at 40.1 μg/m3,followed by the rural site at 23.5 μg/m3,while the suburban site had the lowest concentration of 9.74 μg/m3.With regard to compositional characteristics, alkanes were the dominant components in the urban and rural areas, whereas oxygenated VOCs were predominant in the suburban site. The ozone formation potential(OFP)also varied significantly across regions:96.0 μg/m3 in urban areas,72.0 μg/m3 in rural areas, and only 27.6 μg/m3 in suburban areas.Alkenes were identified as the primary contributors to the total ozone formation potential(TOFP)in all regions, highlighting their critical role in atmospheric oxidation processes.Source apportionment analysis using the positive matrix factorization(PMF)model identified combustion sources, natural sources, chemical industry emissions, industrial emissions, solvent use,and vehicle emissions as the major sources of VOCs in Anyang during summer.Notably, chemical industry emissions and combustion sources were dominant in urban and rural areas, whereas combustion sources and natural sources were more prominent in the suburban area, reflecting distinct emission patterns and anthropogenic activities across the regions.

Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus(HR-HPV) is the primary etiological factor in cervical lesions and cervical cancer. Toll-like receptors(TLRs), as important pattern recognition receptors of the innate immune system, play a key role in the persistence of cervical HR-HPV infection. The "latent pathogen theory" in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) holds that latent pathogens have both "latent" and "triggered" characteristics, which closely resemble the persistent infection and latent pathogenic potential of cervical HR-HPV. Guided by the "latent pathogen theory" and using contemporary immunological techniques, this paper explores the bidirectional immunomodulatory effects of TLRs in the persistence of cervical HR-HPV infection and their relationship with latent pathogens. The results indicate that TLRs play a crucial role in immune recognition and modulation. Dysregulation and overactivation of TLRs can induce chronic inflammation, allowing cervical HR-HPV to persist and evade immune detection. TLR dysfunction, coupled with a deficiency in healthy Qi that prevents the expulsion of pathogens, is a critical factor in the pathogenicity of latent pathogens. Restoring healthy Qi to modulate the immune functions of TLRs emerges as an important strategy for clearing cervical HR-HPV infection. By harmonizing the spleen and kidney and regulating immune balance, it is possible to reverse cervical HR-HPV infection, providing a scientific basis for clinical research.

Maidong products are categorized into "Hang Maidong" and "Chuan Maidong". Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, "Hang Maidong" has been regarded as having superior quality, but currently, it remains in name only in the market. This article reviewed historical materia medica and local chronicles from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and analyzed the historical evolution of Maidong production areas. The history of Maidong production in Zhejiang can be traced back to the Song Dynasty, and cultivation had already developed by at least the Ming Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was consistently used as a tribute. Ming Dynasty chronicles record "Chuan Maidong", which had already been cultivated on a large scale by the Qing Dynasty. "Hang Maidong" and "Chuan Maidong" share the same origin, with the former identifiable by the "gourd waist" shape of its tuberous root. Based on this, it can be inferred that the "Maimendong" herb illustrated in the Origins of Materia Medica(Ben Cao Yuan Shi) and the Maidong stored in the Qing Palace Imperial Pharmacy were both "Hang Maidong". The protection and development of the authentic "Hang Maidong" medicinal herb are urgently needed.

OBJECTIVE:
To assess the independent and combined effects of air pollutants, meteorological factors, and greenspace exposure on new tuberculosis (TB) cases.
METHODS:
TB case data from Shanghai (2013-2018) were obtained from the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Environmental data on air pollutants, meteorological variables, and greenspace exposure were obtained from the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center. We employed a distributed-lag nonlinear model to assess the effects of these environmental factors on TB cases.
RESULTS:
Increased TB risk was linked to PM 2.5, PM 10, and rainfall, whereas NO 2, SO 2, and air pressure were associated with a reduced risk. Specifically, the strongest cumulative effects occurred at various lags: PM 2.5 ( RR = 1.166, 95% CI: 1.026-1.325) at 0-19 weeks; PM 10 ( RR = 1.167, 95% CI: 1.028-1.324) at 0-18 weeks; NO 2 ( RR = 0.968, 95% CI: 0.938-0.999) at 0-1 weeks; SO 2 ( RR = 0.945, 95% CI: 0.894-0.999) at 0-2 weeks; air pressure ( RR = 0.604, 95% CI: 0.447-0.816) at 0-8 weeks; and rainfall ( RR = 1.404, 95% CI: 1.076-1.833) at 0-22 weeks. Green space exposure did not significantly impact TB cases. Additionally, low temperatures amplified the effect of PM 2.5 on TB.
CONCLUSION
Exposure to PM 2.5, PM 10, and rainfall increased the risk of TB, highlighting the need to address air pollutants for the prevention of TB in Shanghai.

Biomedical and Environmental Sciences 2025;38(9):1105-1119
OBJECTIVE:
CRISPR-Cas protects bacteria from exogenous DNA invasion and is associated with bacterial biofilm formation and pathogenicity.
METHODS:
We analyzed the type I-F CRISPR-Cas system of Legionella pneumophila WX48, including Cas1, Cas2-Cas3, Csy1, Csy2, Csy3, and Cas6f, along with downstream CRISPR arrays. We explored the effects of the CRISPR-Cas system on the in vitro growth, biofilm-forming ability, and pathogenicity of L. pneumophila through constructing gene deletion mutants.
RESULTS:
The type I-F CRISPR-Cas system did not affect the in vitro growth of wild-type or mutant strains. The biofilm formation and intracellular proliferation of the mutant strains were weaker than those of the wild type owing to the regulation of type IV pili and Dot/Icm type IV secretion systems. In particular, Cas6f deletion strongly inhibited these processes.
CONCLUSION
The type I-F CRISPR-Cas system may reduce biofilm formation and intracellular proliferation in L. pneumophila.

Objective To investigate the short-term efficacy of transforaminal endoscope combined with percutaneous fixation in the treatment of single-segment Brucella spondylitis with intraspinal abscess. Methods The clinical data of 14 patients with single-segment lumbar Brucella spondylitis with intraspinal abscess treated by transforaminal endoscopic decompression combined with percutaneous fixation in our hospital from March 2021 to August 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, erythrocyte sedimen-tation rate(ESR) and C-reactive protein(CRP) before operation,3 days and 3 months after operation, postoperative drainage volume,post-operative bed rest time and occurrence of complications were recorded. Before operation,3 days and 3 months after operation, the visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the pain degree of lower back and leg,the lumbar function was evaluated by Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score,Oswestry disability index (ODI)was used to evaluate the dysfunction, and the modified Macnab criteria was used to evaluate the good to excellent rate of efficacy. Results The operation time of 14 patients was 182~217 min, with an average of (197.3±18.6) minutes. The mean intraoperative blood loss was (37.8±15.5)mL;the mean drainage volume was (23.5±5.8)mL;the postoperative bed rest time was (3.5±1.4) days. ESR and CRP gradually decreased 3 days and 3 months after operation compared with those before opera-tion,with statistically significant differences(P<0.05). The VAS scores of lower back and legs,JOA scores, and ODI at each time point of follow-up after operation were significantly improved compared with those before operation, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After 3 months of follow-up,the good to excellent rate of efficacy was 85.7%.Conclusion The minimally invasive technique of transforaminal endoscope in the treatment of Brucella spondylitis with intraspinal abscess can conduct neuraxial root decompression, abscess removal, and local surgical area irrigation, significantly relieve the pain of lower limbs, and combined with the percutaneous fixation can significantly alleviate the low back pain and improve the function of patients. The combination of the two methods is minimally invasive, safe and effective in the treatment of Brucella spondylitis with intraspinal abscess.
