ObjectiveThe present study aimed to investigate alterations in white matter microstructure and spontaneous neural activity in male college smokers, and to further explore their associations with nicotine dependence. Given that adolescence and early adulthood represent critical periods for brain maturation, particularly for white matter development, understanding the neural correlates of smoking behavior during this stage is of substantial importance for both neuroscience and public health. MethodsA total of 115 male undergraduate students were initially recruited for this study. After quality control and exclusion procedures, 52 male college smokers and 42 demographically matched healthy non-smokers were included in the final analysis. All participants underwent multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). White matter fiber tracts were reconstructed using the automated fiber quantification (AFQ) method, which enables precise identification and quantification of major fiber bundles. Eighteen major white matter tracts were segmented for each participant. Along the core trajectory of each tract, 100 equidistant nodes were sampled. Fractional anisotropy (FA) was calculated at each node to assess white matter microstructural integrity, while amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) was computed to evaluate spontaneous neural activity within white matter tracts. Between-group differences in FA and ALFF were assessed using two-sample t-tests, with appropriate corrections applied for multiple comparisons. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between imaging-derived metrics (FA and ALFF values in regions showing significant group differences) and nicotine dependence severity, as measured by the Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND). ResultsCompared with healthy non-smokers, male college smokers exhibited significantly increased FA values in several white matter tracts, including the left thalamic radiation, right corticospinal tract, forceps major of the corpus callosum, left uncinate fasciculus, and right arcuate fasciculus. These findings suggest altered microstructural organization or increased directional coherence within these pathways. In addition, smokers demonstrated significantly elevated ALFF values in the forceps major, right uncinate fasciculus, and left arcuate fasciculus, indicating enhanced spontaneous neural activity in these white matter regions. Correlation analyses revealed that FA values in the left thalamic radiation and right corticospinal tract were negatively correlated with FTND scores, suggesting that higher levels of nicotine dependence were associated with reduced microstructural integrity or altered fiber organization in these regions. In contrast, ALFF values in the forceps major and right uncinate fasciculus were positively correlated with FTND scores, indicating that greater nicotine dependence was associated with increased spontaneous neural activity in specific white matter pathways. ConclusionThe present study provides evidence that male college smokers exhibit distinct alterations in both white matter microstructure and functional activity. These abnormalities are not uniformly distributed but rather localized to specific fiber tracts implicated in sensorimotor processing, interhemispheric communication, and higher-order cognitive and emotional regulation. Importantly, the observed associations between imaging metrics and nicotine dependence severity suggest that these structural and functional alterations may reflect neurobiological mechanisms underlying addiction. The combination of AFQ-based tract profiling and multimodal MRI offers a sensitive approach for detecting subtle changes along white matter pathways, highlighting its potential utility in identifying neuroimaging biomarkers of nicotine dependence. Overall, these findings indicate that smoking during early adulthood may disrupt ongoing white matter maturation, potentially leading to long-term consequences for brain function. This study provides novel insights into the neural basis of nicotine dependence and underscores the importance of early intervention and prevention strategies targeting young smokers.

ObjectiveThe controllability changes of structural brain network were explored based on the control and brain network theory in young smokers, this may reveal that the controllability indicators can serve as a powerful factor to predict the sleep status in young smokers. MethodsFifty young smokers and 51 healthy controls from Inner Mongolia University of Science and Technology were enrolled. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was used to construct structural brain network based on fractional anisotropy (FA) weight matrix. According to the control and brain network theory, the average controllability and the modal controllability were calculated. Two-sample t-test was used to compare the differences between the groups and Pearson correlation analysis to examine the correlation between significant average controllability and modal controllability with Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND) in young smokers. The nodes with the controllability score in the top 10% were selected as the super-controllers. Finally, we used BP neural network to predict the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) in young smokers. ResultsThe average controllability of dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor area, lenticular nucleus putamen, and lenticular nucleus pallidum, and the modal controllability of orbital inferior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor area, gyrus rectus, and posterior cingulate gyrus in the young smokers’ group, were all significantly different from those of the healthy controls group (P<0.05). The average controllability of the right supplementary motor area (SMA.R) in the young smokers group was positively correlated with FTND (r=0.393 0, P=0.004 8), while modal controllability was negatively correlated with FTND (r=-0.330 1, P=0.019 2). ConclusionThe controllability of structural brain network in young smokers is abnormal. which may serve as an indicator to predict sleep condition. It may provide the imaging evidence for evaluating the cognitive function impairment in young smokers.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2025;33(5):1262-1268
OBJECTIVE:
To explore the clinical characteristics and prognosis of children with SIL-TAL1-positive T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia ( SIL-TAL1+ T-ALL).
METHODS:
The clinical data of 110 children with newly diagnosed T-ALL admitted to the pediatric department of our hospital from January 2010 to December 2018 were reviewed to compare the clinical characteristics, treatment response and prognosis between SIL-TAL1+ group and SIL-TAL1-group.
RESULTS:
Among the 110 children with T-ALL, 25 cases (22.7%) were in the SIL-TAL1+ group and 85 cases (77.3%) in the SIL-TAL1- group. The white blood cell (WBC) count in the SIL-TAL1+ group was significantly higher than that in the SIL-TAL1- group (P < 0.05), while the other clinical characteristics and treatment response were not significantly different between the two groups. The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of SIL-TAL1+ group and SIL-TAL1- group were 80.0% and 75.5%, and 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rates were 76.0% and 72.9%, respectively. There were no significant differences in OS rate and DFS rate between the two groups ( P >0.05). In children aged < 10 years, the 5-year OS rate of SIL-TAL1+ group and SIL-TAL1- group was 100% and 75.1%, respectively, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSION
Although the WBC level is significantly higher in children with SIL-TAL1+ T-ALL than that in those with SIL-TAL1- T-ALL, the treatment efficacy is similar between the two groups. In children aged < 10 years, the longterm survival rate is superior in the SIL-TAL1+ group.

OBJECTIVE:
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Shexiang Tongxin Dropping Pill (STDP) in treating stable angina patients with phlegm-heat and blood-stasis syndrome by exercise duration and metabolic equivalents.
METHODS:
This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial enrolled stable angina patients with phlegm-heat and blood-stasis syndrome from 22 hospitals. They were randomized 1:1 to STDP (35 mg/pill, 6 pills per day) or placebo for 56 days. The primary outcome was the exercise duration and metabolic equivalents (METs) assessed by the standard Bruce exercise treadmill test after 56 days of treatment. The secondary outcomes included the total angina symptom score, Chinese medicine (CM) symptom scores, Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) scores, changes in ST-T on electrocardiogram and adverse events (AEs).
RESULTS:
This trial enrolled 309 patients, including 155 and 154 in the STDP and placebo groups, respectively. STDP significantly prolonged exercise duration with an increase of 51.0 s, compared to a decrease of 12.0 s with placebo (change rate: -11.1% vs. 3.2%, P<0.01). The increase in METs was significantly greater in the STDP group than in the placebo group (change: -0.4 vs. 0.0, change rate: -5.0% vs. 0.0%, P<0.01). The improvement of total angina symptom scores (25.0% vs. 0.0%), CM symptom scores (38.7% vs. 11.8%), reduction of nitroglycerin consumption (100.0% vs. 11.3%), and all domains of SAQ, were significantly greater with STDP than placebo (all P<0.01). The changes in Q-T intervals at 28 and 56 days from baseline were similar between the two groups (both P>0.05). Twenty-five participants (16.3%) with STDP and 16 (10.5%) with placebo experienced AEs (P=0.131), with no serious AEs observed.
CONCLUSION
STDP could improve exercise tolerance in patients with stable angina and phlegm-heat and blood stasis syndrome, with a favorable safety profile. (Registration No. ChiCTR-IPR-15006020).

Objective To explore the protective effect of resveratrol on myocardial damage caused by sepsis in rats. Methods Forty SD rats were randomly divided into control group, model group, experimental group and combined group, with 10 rats in each group.Except the control group, the other rats were intraperitoneally injected with 20 mg·kg-1 lipopolysaccharide, while the control group was injected with the same amount of normal saline. Two hours before modeling, the experimental group and combinated group were given 50 mg·kg-1 resveratrol by gavage, and the control group and model group were given the same amount of normal saline by gavage. The combined group was injected with 10 nmol of micro RNA-155(miR-155)agomir through the tail vein, and the other group was injected with equal volume of normal saline through the tail vein.Left ventricular function parameters of rats were measured by echocardiography. The level of myocardial injury markers was detected by colorimetry.Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the expression of miR-155.The expression of sirtuin 1(SIRT1)and related proteins of nuclear factor κB signaling pathway were detected by Western blot. Results The left ventricular ejection fraction of control group, model group and experimental group were(80.78±12.85)%,(55.92±7.86)%and(71.55±10.71)%,respectively;left ventricular fractional shortening were(34.08±5.75)%,(22.92±2.96)%,(28.72±4.25)%,respectively;left ventricular end disatolic diameter were(3.12±0.46),(6.34±0.69),(4.95±0.57)mm,respectively;the left ventricular end systolic diameter were(5.98±0.65),(7.24±0.80),(6.16±0.78)mm,respectively;the fractional shortening were(38.91±5.38)%,(22.67±3.53)%,(30.74±3.97)%,and the expression levels of creatine kinase-MB were(661.56±85.44),(1181.41±142.14),(915.02±105.19)U·L-1,respectively;the expressions levels of cardiac troponin Ⅰ were(148.17±28.48),(448.17±60.34)and(375.44±49.01)ng·mL-1,respectively.The expression of miR-155 in control group, model group, experimental group and combined group were 1.00±0.12,3.79±0.45,1.87±0.23 and 4.03±0.49,respectively;the protein relative expression levels of nuclear factor κB(NF-κB)were 1.00±0.08,5.04±0.59,2.73±0.35,5.58±0.63,respectively;the protein relative expression levels of inhibitor of NF-κB-β were 1.00±0.11,3.03±0.37,1.35±0.15 and 2.89±0.34,respectively;the protein relative expressions of inhibitor of NF-κB-α were 1.00±0.13,0.86±0.08,1.21±0.18,0.77±0.09,respectively;the protein relative expression levels of SIRT1 were 1.00±0.16,0.66±0.07,0.93±0.14,0.54±0.06,respectively.The above indicators of the model group were compared with the control group, the experimental group were compared with the model group, and the above indicators of the combined group were compared with the experimental group, and the differences were statistically significant(all P<0.05).Conclusion Resveratrol can alleviate myocardial injury and improve cardiac function in sepsis rats, which may be achieved by down-regulating the expression of miR-155,up-regulating the level of SIRT1,and inhibiting the nuclear factor κB signaling pathway.
